I walked back towards Devin car, “I smelt her sent but the further I go down the road I lost it. It’s like she just disappeared.”
“Or just got into a car.” Devin said, sighing heavily. “Stubborn ass girl.” he muttered.
I glared at him, “Hey, watch your mouth.” He got up from the hood of the car and we both got inside of it. “How positive are you that she went to Los Angeles?” I asked.
“A hundred. She’s dead set on finding them and if we are alike, she’ll want to tell them off. I don’t know what would happen after that, but I know we should find her before she decides it. We were separated for a reason and if they find her with them, she could be in trouble.” he said.
“She can’t become a rogue.” I said. “We had a bright future ahead and—“
“Whoa, whoa, whoa man.” he said, cutting me off. I glared at him as he drove, getting quite annoyed with him now since it was real disrespectful. “Alright, we should talk about this. I am a wolf just like you, but you’re right. I lived with humans for most of my life. So have Mat, you have to remember. She’s not use to this life style. She was raised as a human and it’s all she knows. Yes we wolves are quick in things, but do you think she’s really that quick to change? Have you ever just thought about being just her boyfriend? Not her wolf mate who she’s supposed to spend forever with. Do her normal, not yours for right now.”
I scoffed, “I’m not going to be ashamed of who I am—“
“Dude, I’m not saying that. But for Mat sakes, be human normal for her. She wasn’t raised in this world, give her break. She just found out she’s a werewolf and we’re throwing all of this on her. She had a hard life and she probably just doesn’t attention on her.” he said. “When we find her, don’t be her mate who will be angry. Be her concern boyfriend.”
I glared at him for a moment before turning to look out the passenger window. I brought my arm up, resting my elbow on the door as I thought. Okay, so maybe he was right but I wasn’t going to admit that out loud. Mat was pretty much thrown into this whole different world and I was pushing for us to be together rather roughly. She was raised just like a human her whole life. I can see how it would be strange for my kind traditions to be thrown at her.
Okay, so when we find her I’ll be her normal ‘human’ boyfriend. This is going to be so weird.
Mat
I felt someone hit my leg which woke me up out of my sleep. I jerked as my eyes opened and I stared at the wall across from me. I had been dreaming and it was a dream I wish I could forget. I was dreaming of being with Killian, just the two of us laying on the couch, and I was telling him about everything little secret and stories about me.
“Hey pup, wakie wakie.” I heard Gretchen voice. “You gotta get your ass up and moving.”
I groaned as I ran my hands into my wild hair and closed as my eyes as I rolled onto my back. “How long have I been sleeping?” I asked.
“It’s four o’clock.” she said. “Hey, I have something for you.”
I was going to ask what it was until it hit my nose. It smelled like food and my mouth watered up. I quickly sprung up in a sitting position and saw her holding a container. She bent down and held it out to me. I opened it and saw a burrito, making my even more hungry.
I looked at her, “Er—thanks.” I said awkwardly. I picked up the burrito, taking a bite, “You know—for everything. I’m surprise how welcoming you’re being.” I heard stories of rogues being cold and mean assholes who betray their packs. But this chick seems so much more different from stories I heard. She bought me food last night, let me come back with her to her motel room to get a shower and let me stay on the floor, and now she’s bring me more food?
She made a face, “Just because I’m a rogue doesn’t mean I’m a cavemen. I just didn’t want you digging through the trash. Close your mouth dear. You’re mom ever teach you table manners?”
“No.” I said, rolling my eyes as I took another big bite.
“Look pup, I really think you should be heading back home. This isn’t the kind of life you want. I want eighteen to when I left the pack and I regret it. They won’t take me back. It’s hard out here.” she said. “Take my advice—go back before it’s too late.”
“I don’t belong to a pack.” I said, making her look confused. “I’m an orphan, I have no family. I was going to put in this pack up in Oregon but I didn’t want that. I wanted to be by myself.”
Her eyebrows furrowed, “Who are you again?”
I slowed down on chewing my food, “My name is Mat and I’m no one.”
“We’re all someone.” she said. “Look, I’m not going to be your mother or your best friend so I can’t really tell you what to do. It’s your life, fuck it however you want. Just consider my advice. Also,” she said, pursing her red covered lips. “I might have found those people you’re looking for.”
I started coughing on the piece of burrito I was swallowing and I covered my mouth. She looked disgusted, but I was taken off guard. I swallowed the piece down and giving her an urging look, “Go on.”
“Wow.” she said, scrunching her nose. “Anyways, they’re not a very social couple I hear. They keep to themselves allot, but they live in Crescent Moon.”
“Allrriigght?” I said, waving her to continue. “Street? Avenue?”
“Trailer park.” she said. “Allot of other rogues lives there. That’s why it wasn’t hard to ask around since allot of them live there.”
“Oh,” I said, looking down at my burrito I for some reason didn’t feel very hungry anymore to eat. I looked back up at her, “Well thank you.”
“Hey, that just means you won’t be staying another night on my floor for free.” she sarcastically said.
Killian
I held the picture out towards the middle age wolf, “Have you seen her?” I asked.
He made a snarl look before spiting and I stopped myself from making a face. Disgusting man, like the rest of them. He scars on his face and doesn’t look very friendly. He looked down at the picture and shook his head, “Never seen her in my life, kid. Real pretty little thing she is—“
I bared my teeth, “Don’t continue your barbarian.” I said before walking away. I found Devin soon, “Any luck?”
“Nope.” he said. “We’ve been looking for hours. There only a few groups around so that means there’s only one place we can go now.”
Mat
I walked over to the old painted chipped signed with the trailer park name on it. My stomach was turning and I was having so many feeling. I took a step forward, but I was quick to take two steps back. I don’t know if I can do it. I have thought about this moment for most of my life. What I would say to my mom who had abandoned me as a baby. I always imagined myself yelling at her, calling her a bitch and lowlife about leaving her child behind. I don’t know why I felt so scared now though as if I was going to explode.
They were right in this trailer park, so close and I was terrified. I set my bag down and ran my fingers threw my mess of curly hair as I was pampering myself up to look nice. I was sweating from nervousness. Ugh, why am I so nervous? I could get in fights with no problem but I can’t hand meeting my own birth parents?
They’re just strangers pretty much, I need to keep reminding myself that since that’s what they are. They may be my parents, but they’re nothing to me.
“Hey,” I heard behind me, making me jump. I quickly turned around, finding a man a few feet away from me. He was dressed in washed out blue jeans and a black t-shirt. He had a curly dark hair that was pushed back probably from his fingers and a bread. I stared at him for a moment because something about him just seemed so familiar. Where have I seen this man? He arched his eyebrow, “Hello? Look little girl, the man here aren’t very nice so you should just—“
“Clyde?” I questioned.
He looked more confused, “Yes? Do I know you?”
I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. The more I stared at him, the more I saw an older version of Devin. I did have his thick curly hair and hazel eyes. He was tall, standing about six-three, making him tower over me. He stared back at me to and I just wanted to cry. I held the emotions back. I had expected to see my mother, but not my father.
I set my bag down and cleared my throat. I turned around and I slowly pulled down the flannel shirt I was wearing off my shoulder to show the disfigured star shaped birthmark on the back of my shoulder.
I heard him take a deep breath in and I couldn’t lift my head up to look behind me to see his reaction. I don’t know what I’ll do if I looked at him again. I looked like him as well. I always thought I would look like my mother, but no. I looked like him.
I thought back to the time he had come to see me when I was little girl at the group home, making my emotions run wild.
“Matilda?” he asked real low, like he was whispering but I heard him.
I opened my mouth again and words could come out finally, “I prefer to be called Mat.” Gaining enough courage, I turned around and looked up at him, pulling the flannel shirt back up. He took a step closer to me, but I took a step back.
“Matilda.” he said, looking at me as if he seen a ghost. “What are you doing here?”
I scoffed, chuckling, “Oh what? No happy to see me, daddy?” I sarcastically asked. “I’m surprised you hadn’t noticed the second you saw me since apparently I have allot of your features.”
“Oh, I noticed. I just didn’t think it was really you.” he said. “God, look how beautiful you grown to be.”
“Are you serious?” I asked, confusing him. My voice turned cold as my anger grew, “You see your daughter after how many years and that’s what you have to say?”
He stared at me for a moment, “I know it’s hard to explain but—“
“It’s not that hard.” I said, shaking my head. I shrugged, “I know everything. I know you and my ‘mother’ abandoned me because she got you both into trouble. I know I have a brother. I know I’m a fucking werewolf.”
He didn’t look unfazed from my cursing, “Why are you here?”
I scoffed, laughing humorlessly, “To actually see the people who created me. But I think just seeing you would be enou—“
“No.” he said, cutting me off with a cold tone. “Why are you here? You should be back in Oregon under Lincoln protection.” He closed his eyes and breathed heavily out his nose, “Please, just please tell me you joined the pack before coming here.” he said, opening his eyes.
I crossed my arms over my chest and shrugged, “So what if I didn’t? I don’t belong there—“
“Jesus Matilda!” he yelled. “You know how much trouble you gotten yourself into? Do you know how it will look when people find out you ran away?”
I snorted, “Like I care what people think of me. If you knew me, you would know I don’t.”
“You don’t understand what I am saying.” he said. “The people in packs are hard people. They will judge you, make your life hard, and do everything in their power to get you thrown out. You have to go back before they convince Lincoln to never let you in. You need to be in a pack, Matilda. You’re life doesn’t belong out here. We wanted better for you.”
“We?” I questioned and he nodded. “She left me in a fucking park! To be taken in by the state and live in a group home! I was alone for my whole life. I never knew who I truly was, because of both of yours decision. You should have left me with someone in the pack—“
He shook his head, “It would have been dangerous at the time. We were hated by everyone and no one would take you guys. They would have done things to you and your brother because of us. We knew after all these years, they’ll calm down and moved on from it. Listen to me, Mat. There are things about our kind you may not understand—“
I saw a car coming up behind Clyde and my blood turned cold at the familiar black car. I saw who was in the car and as Clyde turned around to see what I was looking at I made a run for it. I ran across the street towards a fence and I heard the car come to a halt.
“Mat!” I heard Killian voice.
I made a mistake of looking behind me as I ran and he was quickly running behind me. Crying out, I tried my best to run faster. “Leave me alone!” I yelled.
“Mat, stop!”
I made it to the gate and I quickly started climbing it. I felt hands touching my waist and I screamed, hitting his arms that went around me, “Get off me! Don’t touch me, Killian!”
He pulled me off and I was kicking. My foot pressed against the cage roughly, making him stumble back. He fell on his back with me on top of him. He groaned, but he held tightly onto me. “Damnit, Mat!” he yelled.
I squirmed in his arms, “Let go—ah!” I cried out when he turned us. He forced me on my back, climbing on top of me. I started hitting his chest before he grabbed my wrist, forcing them down onto the ground, “Get off! I’m not going back!”
“Yes you are!” he said.
“No!”
“Yes!”
“No! No! No!” I screaming, squirming under him. “Why should I? I don’t belong there.”
“Yes you do.” he said, making me stop. He gave me a look as if he was begging me, “Please Mat, believe me when I say you do. So don’t come back for the pack, come back for me.” I stared up at him, just looking at him. God, these damn butterflies in my stomach as I looked at him. “I came here to look for you, because I care about you.”
“Killian, we’re very different—“
“I won’t change you.” he said, cutting me off. “I’ll change for you. I’ll—I’ll act more human. I won’t pressure you about being my mate. It’s hard to be my girlfriend if you’re all the way out here. Mat, I just don’t want you. I need you.”
“Oh come on, Killian. You can survive without—“
He shook his head, “I don’t wanna survive without you. You need to come back or I’ll stay here.”
My mouth dropped, “But—no! You go back to your life in the pack. That’s where you belong.”
“I belong with you now.” he said. He lowered himself, his nose just barely missing touching mine, “I’ll always choose your side.” I stared up at his amazing blue eyes—which had become one of my favorite things about him—and so badly wanted to kiss him. He had to be feeling the same way because he pressed his mouth against mine. He took his hands off from around my wrist slowly, hesitating. If I wasn’t so lost into kissing him, I would have punched him and ran away. Something about him being near me, touching me—running away was the last thing on my mind.
