Panic with the color Red Chapter Two
The car came to a subtle stop along a dirt trail. At the end I was met with a house that seemed to look three stories and gigantic. Outside the house it had shrubs lining the perimeter and the porch that came down with three stairs. The house looked like it was built with a dark wood but was glossed with something I wasn't sure of. The windows had white curtains draping down over them. This house was located deep in the woods, yet the yard was huge. A hammock was attached to two parallel trees. As I took in this beautiful sight I became curious about how the back of the house or even what the interior of the house looked like.
My tongue ran over my dry lips as I shifted in the seat. I shouldn't be here. I should still be on the run. But because I ran into this town for help I now have Daniel, Trevor, and their siblings in danger. Something I can't take back and now I will have to hold that burden. I will only stay for one night. In one night I can eat and get some rest for my aching muscles. I've been running for so long and for now I will take a night's break.
"I'm going to pick you up." Daniel warned me. Except, he didn't pick me up. Instead he just watched me with curiosity and that's when it hit me. He was saying he was going to pick me up because he was asking for my approval.
"O-Okay." I croaked.
Even if I already had a glass of water my throat was still sore and scratchy. I must be dehydrated. I already knew that the lack of both water and food were taking its toll on me, especially after all the running.
Daniel reached for me. He unbuckled my seat belt and then scooped me up into his muscular arms. I only agreed for him picking me up since I was too weak to walk. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to stand without wobbling and then falling over. Daniel pressed me tight against his chest protectively. Once I laid my head against his shoulder I could smell Spice and Pine. The smell was soothing as I breathed him deeply in my lungs wanting to keep his scent with me.
"Everyone else is inside," Trevor told Daniel, "They're all in the living room. Well, almost all, Dominick is raiding your fridge again."
"He better not get into my cherry cheesecake or I'll have his head." Daniel grumbled under his breath.
Trevor cracked a smile as he exited the car and Daniel made his way up the stairs and into the house. A light flicked on and I could get a better look at what the inside of the house looked like. The floor was a light wood floor, the walls a light tan. As Daniel walked more into the house I could see the kitchen's walls were a different color. It was red. Even the carpet to the living room was a red. Quickly I felt nauseated and squirmed again in Daniels arms.
Daniel shushed me gently, "Flower, it'd going to be okay."
I let out a small cry, "R-red! No! B-blood!" I was in too much of a panic to say a complete sentence. The color of the walls and carpet triggered my nightmares. The images of blood flashed through my mind along with the images of my family and friends dead. Tears started to run down my face. I couldn't be in this room. Daniel seemed to sense my sudden panic and changed direction. He made his way up the stairs but it wasn't only him going up the stairs. Behind him I spotted three men and a woman following him.
Daniel set me down in a different room. What he set me down on was a comfortable love seat with the color white. Slowly, my panic began to die down allowing me to notice that Daniel sat beside me with one arm latched around my waist. It was like he was anchoring me to him and he probably was. I didn't mind. And that surprised me. Never once in my life had I felt so comfortable around a stranger I had just met not too long ago. In the other town I had terrible trust issues and when I left I still had those issues.
Trevor was the first one to speak up, "Hey Dominick? Did you get into Daniels cake?" He asked with a smile hinted in his voice. It was amusement that crept. Not anger, frustration, or stern. Just a brother teasing his sibling.
I saw a man shake his head. His hair was shorter than Daniels and instead of the black glossy hair that Daniel had he instead had a dark brown. He still had a very large muscle mass but from what I could see is that Daniel was bigger than all his brothers. Dominick had an easy going domineer. Kind of more laid back but I bet he was still as dangerous as Daniel seemed to me. My hand reached down in the cushion. I don't know why but something in my mind told me to do it. As my hand went further down into the cushion without letting the siblings see my fingers felt something hard, cold, and metal. My fingers traveled over it and that's when it hit me. It was a gun.
Was this some sort of crime family I was with? If so then I was in trouble. My breath got caught in my throat as my whole body froze up. Daniels arm tightened more around my waist but that wasn't it. He dragged me off of the cushion until I sat on top of his lap. I didn't dare move. His chin rested on the top of my head and this time both his arms wrapped themselves below my breasts.
"So," The woman began, "My name is Rose." The woman had long hair but her hair wasn't as long as mine. My father never wanted me to cut my hair short but he wouldn't stop me. But because he like my hair long I never touched it except to cut the ends to keep my hair healthy. The woman had black hair just like Daniel. Her head was a little oval shaped like Dominick's, but feminine. However, she still looked dangerous like the rest of her siblings, "The bozo that you haven't met yet is Cade." She pointed at one of the men who leaned with his back against the wall and his arms folded in front of him.
"N-nice to meet you." I said with a small smile that wasn't real. I still had trust issues and I was only staying for the night so there was really no use in getting friendly.
Daniels nuzzled the top of my head, "So tell us what happened to you. You can trust us my little flower. Don't be frightened." His words flowed through me making me shiver slightly.
Something inside me urged me to speak. It was like when Daniel wanted me to do something I wanted to do it. To actually do it. I couldn't help the words that escaped my mouth, "A f-few months ago my family was killed..." I spoke in almost a whisper," Whoever killed t-them is coming after m-me, but I d-don't know who they are o-or if there is m-more than one..." I could feel the prick of tears threatening to fall, "I w-was on the run without r-rest for a few days u-until I found Water Ridge...I w-was there for almost a m-month and I thought I was safe..."
Thought I was safe
That was the key words. I was at that town for a whole month and nothing happened. So I thought everything was fine and the shadows lost my track. That was when I made the mistake of relaxing. They wanted to catch me off guard just to see my reaction and laugh at it. To feed off of my terrors and nightmares they have consumed me in. The darkness they surrounded me in...
"Keep going." Daniel soothed and I snapped out of my trance.
I took a few deep breaths before continuing, "T-they found me. The shadows...I thought I could relax at that town but when I went back to one of my friend's house's the shadows were there and forced me to watch everyone's death. I s-saw them get killed s-slowly...I heard t-there screams..." I could help the flowing of tears as they trickled down my face. Daniel moved my body until I was facing him. His eyes seemed soft and gentle but if I looked deeper I could see the anger and murderous intent that was hidden. He moved his hand towards my cheek like before and let his thumb glide across to wipe away the tears. This was enough to allow me to keep going, "I j-jumped through one of the windows and e-escaped with minor i-injuries and continued to run for almost a whole m-month...It was difficult t-to find food or clean water...But then I found this town..." I kept my eyes on Daniel's piercing blue eyes. I still had scars from the glass on the window and the memory of yanking each glass shard out of my skin.
I remember that whenever I got hungry I'd get down on all fours and prowl towards a rabbit, squirrel, or even a bird. A predator and prey. At times in the woods I could feel something threatening to emerge but I forced it back down, too scared to allow it to escape. I could always hear it's catlike noises in the back of my mind...
Daniel let out a growl, "Nobody will ever try to harm you here. I will protect you with my life." Daniels eyes changed from blue to black in an instant like he was fighting something deep inside him. When the feeling inside of my body wanted to escape I could feel the change of colors in my eyes as well. I wasn't sure what color exactly but I was still alarmed by it and the hissing.
"Calm down Daniel." Rose said gently.
All of the siblings were now looking between Daniel and I with a glimpse of curiosity and something else I couldn't quite put the tip of my finger on. Daniel snarled a little at his sister and buried his face against my neck. His tongue swept across my nape causing my face to heat up. One of his brothers placed there hand on Daniels shoulder and whispers something in his ear I couldn't quite hear. Whatever he said to Daniel made him loosen his hold on me and turn his eyes back to the glowing blue that I would never be able to get enough of when I looked at them. I was already obsessed with his eyes and his voice was melodic. I loved them both.
I blinked a few times realizing what I was thinking. I can't be thinking about things like that towards a stranger. Daniels voiced rose a little with the growl, "You guys can come back tomorrow." Instead of the teasing, or playful tone he told his siblings this in a command. A command that held a warning if they didn't listen.
Rose and Cade nodded slightly before she stood up and they both walked away together. Trevor and Dominick stayed a little longer but the look that Daniel gave them was enough for them to get the message and leave a few minutes after Rose and Cade. After all of them left I was now alone with Daniel who still held my in his lap just not as tight as before.
My eyes slowly began to droop down but I fought to keep them open. I wasn't going to fall asleep on Daniel. Even when I tried to fight it Daniels hand went behind my head and pressed the side of my face into his chest like he knew I was tired. My exhaustion grew until my eyes finally closed and this time I couldn't open them again. My whole body relaxed against his. Silently, I breathed in and out and with every inhale I brought Daniels smell of Spice and Pine filled my nose. I enjoyed his smell and knew I was addicted. I couldn't help it.
"Flower," Daniel voice almost lapped at my skin in a soft whisper, "Sleep."
His words were like a soft caress over my body. Even if it was only a gentle whisper there was still the small command hidden in his voice. I could feel myself slowly falling asleep. Darkness swept me off my feet to where I couldn't fight it no more and this time I allowed myself to drift until I was no longer awake but even asleep I could still see those blue piercing eyes staring at me and changing colors as it watched me. As he watched me.
