Interlude: Settling In

"Go on ahead and get settled in," the Doctor told Jessie, smiling at her as she joined him. "Rooms are down the hall, take a left."

She nodded. "Thanks."

"And when you get back," he called as she left, "you can choose where we go!"

She gave him a wild grin, then disappeared.

The Doctor sighed, folding his arms as he thought about what had occurred after he'd left the two agents together. In mid flight onboard the TARDIS, she had sent a whirlwind of images to him: the first was a familiar one, of Jessie, flying through the air over the Nestene Consciousness, her face an image of anger. The next had been a completely unfamiliar girl, with blond hair in tight waves and blue eyes, in jeans and off-the-shoulder tops, but she held a gun to someone he couldn't see, with a ferocity he recognized. The final one had been yet another girl, this one with dark hair with red streaks shot through it. She was fighting with two swords, dressed in armor, and he had had a start when he recognized it as the kind Jessie had worn. The two other women were somehow connected to the Jessie he knew. How?

"Return to her and find out," the TARDIS had encouraged.

So he had. And it had paid off.

But it was odd. There hadn't been anything about her being Asgardian in anything he'd read on her.

Jessie walked down the TARDIS's hallways, feeling energy left from the Aether burn a little. She stood in front of a door with a familiar tree on it, and she smiled. "Thanks," she whispered, opening the door. She gasped in delight when she got inside.

The ceiling was a mural of the great tree Yggdrasil, along with each of the Nine Realms. Her bed was queen-sized, a deep shade of violet with a bronze bedspread. "My armor color," she realized, then grinned. "Oh, you are brilliant."

She saw the wall behind her bed and grinned. The palace of Asgard was there in all its glory, and when she turned to the wall opposite it, there was a mural of the Bifrost bridge. The rainbow bridge still seemed to be moving.

The dressers were black with violet knobs. Settled on them, though, were photos from SHIELD, the Avengers, and even just she and Saleen. She found the one that she loved the most and smiled, looking at down at her, Thor, and Loki. She remembered when Thor's mortal girlfriend, Jane Foster, had taken the photo after the defeat of Malekith. She giggled, remembering how shocked the Asgardians had been when they saw her camera.

"You seem giddy," a Northern voice commented as the Doctor stepped in.

"Good memories," she replied happily, waving her hand around her room. "It's gorgeous. Your ship is so awesome."

He grinned. "I know it." He nodded to the ceiling. "You into Norse mythology?"

"A little too into it," she replied, handing him the photo. "I sort of had an accident with the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. Only way to save my life was a blood transfusion, but my type was rare, AB negative. Thor used some of his blood instead." She swallowed. "I'm half Asgardian now. Only Saleen and Skye know besides the Avengers about everyone on Asgard."

The Doctor looked at the other pictures. "I saw a news article," he said slowly. "You were at a funeral. Whose?"

Jessie looked down at the floor. "Grant," she whispered. "Special ops agent. Skye and I always joked around and called him 'robot.' He was always something more to her . . . and she was something more to him." She squeezed her eyes shut. "I was on mission with Saleen, Natasha, and Clint when he died. He was killed in action saving her from a man called the Clairvoyant. Skye's never been the same since."

The Doctor was silent. "I'm sorry," he finally said.

"Don't be. He died for a good cause. That's all he could've asked for."

They stood in silence for a few seconds, then the Doctor gave her a grin. "So, Jessie Nightshade, ready for your first trip in time?"

Jessie gave him a matching grin. "I was ready when I stepped inside this thing."

He laughed and beckoned her out, and she ran for the console room, the Doctor behind her.

The TARDIS hummed appreciatively, watching the violet and bronze Asgardian. This one was special.

Just how, would be interesting to find out.

Don't kill me because Ward (currently) isn't in here! That is completely AU because I'm pretty certain the Clairvoyant will be dead with all six members of the SHIELD team still alive. Once they get the new episode up . . . *cough*

Anyway, there will be interludes into the next chapters, except for continuing stories, like "Aliens of London" to "World War Three." That's gonna be fun. :)
