Running Rabbits
It was night, when I woke up. The room was unfamiliar. The only light was a candle on the nightstand, illuminating an envelope.
I opened it to find nothing but a paper scrawled with the words,"Run little rabbit."
That's when I thought,
and left the room.
I was only met by a hallway leading to more rooms.
I entered one of them to see a boy and a girl. The boy was wiping blood off the girl's shiny hair.
Then the boy ran up to me, grabbed my shoulders and shouted,"Run away! Leave before y-"
Multiple gunshots came from behind me. Soon the boy was on the ground, blood coming from the wounds on his body. He was beyond help.
I turned around to see a man, his head thrown back as he laughed.
"I've found the rabbits... you better run before the hunting dog catches you," He said,"I'll give you three seconds. 1..."
The two of us ran before he got to two.
When we were sure he was far away from us we were in a dimly lit hallway.
"Do you know what's going on?" I asked.
"I think it's to predict the future. Given the war going on, someone's probably gathered children from each country participating. Then they got some guy to try to kill the countries they want to lose. Whoever remains are the winning countries. That boy was Japanese, I'm from Germany," She said, and continued to walk.
I stayed silent from then on, worried about the fact that I was Italian, the same side as the Japanese boy who'd already died.
Then I heard something fly past me.
I looked behind to see a knife lodged deep in the girl's throat, pinning her against the wall. Blood was dripping from her throat and onto the floor.
It must've been from a trap since nobody else was here. Not wanting to see if my deduction was right I ran away from the girl's body.
I was alone again. Even if it was brief, having the girl with me felt safer. I stop to take a breath from all the running.
That's when I heard footsteps. I realized I was at the end of the hallway. There was only one door at the end.
I frantically ran to the door trying to open it. It was locked.
The man from before is at the other end of the hallway. With delighted eyes and a wide grin he raises his gun.
My last thoughts were, I'm sorry Italy. We're not winning.
