I snapped out of my reverie when I felt a finger poking my shoulder and saw Rylie looking at me in concern. I looked around and saw that we were still alone in the huge library.
"What?"
She tapped her wrist then rubbed her growling stomach.
Oh crap, it's lunch time and once again, I'm not hungry.
"You can go and have your lunch, Ry. I'm not hungry. I'll stop by during dinner time." I said nonchalantly and continued wiping the windows.
I heard her sigh loudly and she shoved her little notepad on my face.
'How long will you be like this?'
I shrugged. "Don't know. Don't care. We've got a huge library to clean and we have also been stuck cleaning this room for two days."
She shook her head in resentment and quickly scribbled, 'Take a break. It will help you'
"No, thanks." I said blatantly. "You go take your break, I'll start cleaning up the top shelves."
Rylie gave me her puppy dog eyes.
I gave her a bored look. "That thing stopped working on me a long time ago. Now shoo!"
In a flash, Rylie is gone from the library.
It has been three weeks since that shitty faced Agostini son challenged me and my life has been an actual hell ever since. I have tried everything and I literally mean everything to get out of this house.
My first plan was to ask the guards to let me pass in the exact same manner I had asked the capo for his permission because I believe that everybody deserves some respect irrespective of what they actually work. Instead, those idiotic men called the capo and his brother then they went back to their duties. Adrian cracked a joke or two to ease the tension between us while I kept glaring at his so-called brother who was, not surprisingly, glaring right back at me.
I huffed, he huffed and then we went back to our respective duties.
That was the last time I saw them, not that I care about.
Then I tried jumping by from the window of a random room I was cleaning, held my head high and walked straight out of the main door, back door and adjoining kitchen door, tried sneaking out in the middle of the night, tried jumping straight into the garbage chute in the hopes that I would land straight out of the mansion and didn't care that I would stink, tried running away from the indoor garden (yes, they do have an indoor as well as an outdoor garden. These people are filthy rich) and my recent effort was to start climbing up from the fence while ignoring the shouts and the warnings of the guards who had caught me in my every attempt.
In short, the Agostini son had informed every man in this house about a very naughty little girl who will try to make a run out of here and ordered not to let her step out of the mansion walls.
I grinned when I saw two guards entering the library and they stood in a far corner, keeping their eyes on me.
"Hey boys!" I waved shyly and winked, "What do you think I should do today?"
They stood still like statues.
"Huh? I should break one of the windows and jump out of it?" I asked curiously then laughed.
They were still standing like statues.
"Whatever." I giggled, "Can you guys at least fetch me a stool? I need to clean up the top shelves."
Statues. These people are literally trained to be statues.
"Fine, I'll get it myself." I muttered.
As expected, the guards followed me everywhere while I made fun of their hairstyles.
I climbed up the stool then started taking out books one by one, wiped the dust off them and kept it back to their original places. This work is the most boring work ever. I hate libraries. The silence, the smell of old books and the person who actually owns this specific library.
I frowned when I saw that there was one book in the corner, all dusty and has cobwebs. Very carefully, I stood on my toes, took the support of the shelves and leaned on my right with one leg in the air. My fingers tried to pull out the book.
"Didn't know that you could ballet."
I jumped in shock. The stool started shaking which made me lose my balance and I clung onto the shelf for support, but my hands slipped and I fell along with a few books.
I moaned in pain when my head got hit with something hard. My eyes fluttered open when I felt the ground beneath me, rumbling and releasing air in short exhales and they widened in surprise when I saw where I had landed...again.
Leonardo Agostini was rubbing his head, slightly wincing in pain, but stopped when he saw me looking at him.
I grinned sheepishly. "Long time no see, August-mini."
"How the fuck do I always end up below you?" He snapped. I giggled in response and tried to get up from him, but when my hand touched his chest as a support, we stopped.
There was something underneath those three piece of clothes which was beating frantically; his heart. I was curious and I didn't understand why, so I pressed my ears to his upper chest without having any second thoughts and listened to those incredibly loud beats. My nose brushed his neck and I saw him gulp inaudibly, his Adam's apple bobbed up and down.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Why is it going so fast and melodious? Did he come here after running a marathon or something? But he is not sweating or panting. I tried to shift my head a bit lower to hear them more properly and heard the owner taking a sharp intake of breath. I looked up, but couldn't see the Agostini son because my hair was now covering his face. He should put those aside. Believing that he can take care of himself, I pressed my ears again and my eyes widened in surprise when I heard those beats going at an unimaginable pace.
"Holy shit! You're having a heart attack."
I pulled my head up, my knees pressed on his inner thighs and I felt something soft and long.
"Figlio di puttana!" He screamed.
"Heart attack!" I screamed in panic and started pumping his chest, my knees still pressing that thing on his inner thighs.
Leonardo screamed again and pushed me away. The guards came in a hurry, saw the capo on the floor who was now groaning and muttering something in Italian under his breath as he cupped the region of his inner thighs. In a flash, a gun was pointed at my head for the twenty ninth time while the other guard ran to the capo and helped him get up.
I frowned when I saw the capo getting up from the floor and sitting on the stool.
Wasn't he suffering from a heart attack?
"Are you okay?" I asked, ignoring the gun pressing at my head.
He shot me a deadly glare, his face turning red in anger. "You get out! Get out of here and meet me in my office in thirty minutes!"
I did what he told me to, but I was surely confused a lot by his sudden change in health.
*****
I was standing in front of the capo, who had become a landing cushion for me, for the past fifteen minutes.
He was perfectly fine and he was engrossed in a file. It didn't seem like he was having a heart attack almost an hour ago. The capo knew that I was standing in front of him but he was absolutely ignoring me.
"Capo?"
"Caapoo?"
"August-mini?"
He emitted a strange noise from his throat.
"If you are busy, I can come later."
"Stay." He growled, still not lifting his eyes up from the file.
I rolled my eyes. "What's the point of staying if you are not going to talk?"
He shook his head in amusement. "Talk? There is no need for that."
"How's your heart?" I asked curiously. He stopped functioning. "Do you have some special meds for heart attack?"
"I...uhh..." He cleared his throat. "My heart is fine."
"That's good." I hummed. "Then why the hell am I here?"
Silence.
I groaned in annoyance and started pacing. "You know what? This is unfair! I am trying my best to get out of this house and you have your little minions behind my back!"
More silence.
"First you and your face creamed brother disappear for three weeks then you appear out of nowhere and have a heart attack! Do you have any idea how much effort I am applying here?"
Silence.
I flung my arms up in the air. "Fine! Ignore me now and when I am on my way to escape, you'll pop out of nowhere and block my way to freedom. I have spent years planning my fight for freedom and my life, but you mister ruined everything! You hear me?! Everything!"
I gritted my teeth in frustration when I saw that the capo was still engrossed in his file then I started laughing out of nowhere.
"I'm pretty sure that you know how many attempts I have made in these past weeks, but let me tell you something, Agostini, I'm not going to stop till I go back where I originally came from. You can put the entire army after me, I don't care. You can point guns at me, I don't care. You can even ignore me and try to ignore me when I make my way out of here. It's really frustrating when your little guards point their little guns which are having little bullets on a little girl like me."
I saw him massage his temples and I continued pacing in front of him, "Do you even know how many guns have been pointed at me ever since I landed on you? Twenty nine, you hear me? Twenty nine, out of which twenty three of them are only in three weeks! I have received countless number of shooting threats from you and your minions and guess what? Nothing happened. Ever heard of that dog saying; All bark and no bite? Probably not. In your special case it should be; All talk and no shoot because that's what you do. You go talking and threatening about shooting me and shit if I tried to escape, so what now, huh? I don't think that the big, bad Agostini son is big and bad after all. You are just a bark to people who want their own choices and freedom, a bark to people like me. You don't go biting—"
A gunshot echoed in the room and I froze in shock. My breath hitched when I felt a sharp pain in my leg.
My heart started beating wildly and my hands trembled as they touched the source of my sudden sharp pain.
Blood.
My own blood smeared on my hands. I felt it oozing out from my legs and saw it pool on the floor.
Then I looked at the man who had fired his gun.
Leonardo Agostini kept staring at me in shock, his hands trembling and gun fallen on the floor.
Suddenly the realisation hit me at full force and I screamed in pain.
Then I fell on my own little pool of blood.
