Chapter 8
My blood ran cold. You know that moment when you go outside and you realize it was like thirty degrees when you were dressed for a warm summer day. Yeah, it felt like that. My heart stopped beating. Well as much as a heart can without you dying.
I managed to gulp down some air and I looked Mr. Meyers straight in the eye, "What is it?" I choked out.
"Why don't you go to the office and find out." He said, trying to sound positive. Did I mention he was a REALLY bad at doing so?
I walked to the office as slow as I could, without looking suspicious. Although who would be suspicious of a blind girl? Half of me wanted to sprint to the office, and see what was wrong. I was partly dying of suspense, but the other part of me wanted to crawl up in a hole and never face what could change my life for ever. But all I could do was walk to the office, dreading my fate.
When I got to the office my brother was already there, he was bouncing his leg, which meant he was nervous. "Why are you here?" he asked, "If my sister got in trouble, then that must mean that pigs can fly!"
"I'm here about our mom. That's why you're here too." I said, like I was explaining it to a toddler. He had the brains of one, that was for sure.
Ricky's leg stopped bouncing, as though he was relaxed, then he shot up out the chair, grabbing my shoulders "What happened to her?"
I was about to give his a smart-ass response when someone interrupted me, "Hilton kids?" Asked a voice that could only belong to our principal.
"Yes ma'am?" Ricky said, putting on a voice of fake innocence.
"Your mom told me to give you this note." She said, I heard Ricky snatch the paper from her hand and then he read aloud.
"Dear kids, I have something important to tell you. I just got some results from the doctor. I've got cancer. We'll talk more when you get home." He said, then stopped reading.
I felt tears fall my down my face. This couldn't happen. The cancer had disappeared about four years ago. They said that if it was going to come back it would happen in the next five years. It just barely made it in, but it still had. I only hoped she was strong enough to fight it.
I felt my brother's sorrow coming off him in waves. I was pretty sure he was crying now, too by the way he gasped for breath every few seconds. I put my hand on his shoulder and looked him straight in where I thought his eyes were.
"Hey, whatever happens, good or bad, we can get through it." I said.
. . .
At Lunch...
We were all sitting in our normal spots, in silence. Nobody dared to speak after I told them what had happened with my mom. I wasn't sure why we held our silent truce, but we sure did. I played with my yogurt, trying to forget everything.
That's when I heard the sound of sneakers on the floor. That ruled out our two royal bitches of the school. As they got closer they surprisingly sat down next to us. I had no idea who these people were so I shot them a confused glance, hoping they'd realize they made a mistake.
"So, what are we talking about?" The first one asked.
When none of us answered the other one said, "Lively crowd."
"Well I'm Emilie." The first one introduced herself.
"And I'm Emma" the second one said.
I then realized these were the two infamous E's. They went from table to table, trying to fit in with others. They stayed until everyone else left or they were asked to leave. Last year they got cussed out by Jordan and Marissa and their friends. It was a major deal. Everyone hated the E's but they also loved them in their own ways. So, in the end, the E's sat with the popular kids for a week, before leaving. That was the only time they had ever left a table.
It's the E's! I signed into Mercy's hand and I knew she quickly relayed the message to Eve. They were the last group of people I wanted to have around right now, especially with my latest development.
"So what are you doing here?" I asked, speaking for the three of us.
"We're the E's," answered Emma. "We're always here!"
"So about your mom..." Emilie said. I was shocked, how had they know that?
"She'll be better soon." I hope. I then knew that I wouldn't have the heart to tell them to leave, and neither would Mercy or Eve. It seemed like we were stuck with them, at least for a while. That's when I realized this year was going to be different from what I thought it would be.
