Chapter 21 (FOR REAL DIS TIME!!)

We walked through the halls of the school, fingers interlocked, each stride we took, setting us a step further from reality. There was something about Jaxon's hand, something unexplainable, but it felt like my hand should always be in his. His hand was something so familiar now, something that I could trust.

A faint smile was spread across my lips as I walked down the hall. It was different from when I walked down the hall when I was a pretty bitch. Now, with my hair pulled back in a ponytail instead of down and my jeans instead of a skirt.

A few students were already in the halls and I could feel their stares. I could hear their whispers. I heard someone chewing gum, and smelt some applying another round of perfume. I don't know why I felt so different today, but there definitely something about today that set my veins on fire.

Finally we reached the open door to my science class. It was the only class that Jaxon and I shared and he always seemed to go through the extra trouble to walk me to class. I told him I knew my way to class, but he refused to believe me.

Or he just wanted an excuse to walk me to class.

The very thought made my heart flutter. It had been such a long time since I had felt like this. Or maybe I'd never felt like this before. It was strange to feel such deep feelings about another person who I'd only known for a couple months.

Yet he was the only one who knew exactly what to say and when to say it. He was the only person to approach me as I sat outside in the rain. He was the first guy who'd ever stuck around me so long without wanting something or another.

Jaxon was the person who showed me the school. He had helped me see a world in ways I would never have been able to do before. He was the first guy to take me to any ice cream parlor or openly admit that he got all of his inspiration from books.

Yet I could only wonder what set him apart from everyone else. He definitely wasn't like other guys, although he was an amazing runner, and guide for me. I suppose I'd always known he was different from everyone else, yet I'd never really asked myself why.

Why was he so different? What was it that I could not see that others could. What did the guy next to me look like to the others of this world. Was he going to forever be a silhouette of a person, features forever shifting with my mood?

"What's on your mind, Raindrop? You sure your okay?" He asked, his voice soft.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I responded, wearily.

"I swear if your lying to me..." He trailed off, grumbling.

"Don't worry so much, Jaxon!" I said, feeling more relaxed than I had in ages.

"As your running aid it's my job to worry." He teased. "So long as you don't get a mutt to replace me." His voice then dropped to just above a whisper. "Then we couldn't hang out. I'm allergic to dogs."

I laughed at this attempt to keep something so silly secret, although I had my own secrets about dogs that I felt the urge to tell Jaxon. "Don't worry, I won't." I said, then dropped my voice to the same volume he held his at earlier. "But just between you and me, I don't like dogs either."

"Really? You actually strike me as a dog person you know." He said, as if analyzing me.

"My aunt had a dog once, it actually just died a few months ago, and when I was in eighth grade that creature attacked me." I said, shivering. "I've been afraid of dogs ever since."

"So you are a cat person?" He asked.

"Yes, I am. It's also why I don't have a guide dog." I explained.

"You know Raindrop, I think I'm liking you more by the minute." He said, wrapping an arm around my shoulder.

"And I hope you know that one of these days you're going to tell me what you look like." I said, confidently.

"Not likely Raindrop. I bet you couldn't get it out of my by the time we become Juniors next year. I have lips of steel." He said, jokingly.

"Lips of steel, really?" I said. "I'll make sure to add that when I describe to you what you look like in perfect detail before the final Cross-Country meet." I said.

"So how about we make a deal then?" Jaxon asked, a mischievous tone radiating off his voice. "If you can tell me what I look like before the final cross-country meet, then I'll owe you a favor. But if you don't, I want a favor from you."

"Hmm, a interesting proposal Mr Augustine." I said, with mock seriousness.

"So what do you say Miss Hilton?" He asked.

"Deal." I said.

"Deal."
