Chapter 12

It started on Monday morning, before my alarm, which was set for 6:45AM, went off. Now I wasn't the type of girl who got up that early. Not anymore. I didn't care about what I wore and I can put on makeup, so I had no need to get out of bed before 7AM. So when the pebbles started to hit my window, I was pretty mad already.

I should probably explain this first. I lived on the top floor of a two story building. It was my bedroom before the Accident, and I refused to change it to one on the ground level. It was just one of my many rebellious acts towards this Accident. I wanted things to stay the same. Only that is impossible.

I stormed out of bed and swung open the window, then I screamed, "What do you want?"

"Hey Raindrop!" A familiar voice came from the yard. It was Jaxon.

"You didn't answer my question." I said, only losing some of my anger.

"Is there any reason I shouldn't be here at four in the morning?" He asked. I groaned knowing he purposely gave me the time.

"Okay did you just come to chat, or..." I trailed off.

"No. Put something you can run in, on." He said.

I shut the window and threw on some clothes. A t-shirt and shorts. I then tied my hair up in a messy ponytail and slipped through the window. I hadn't done this since the Accident, so I was a little nervous. I went to the place where my Mom had once had ivy vines snaking up, but they were long dead now.

I gently climbed down the wooden ladder-like thing. It was slow going since I had no idea when it would be safe to touch the ground. But I finally got there. I then sprinted up to meet Jaxon. I smiled and I hoped he was smiling back.

"So where we running to today, Coach?" I said, teasingly.

"Well, how about the route the cross-country kids take." Jaxon said, doing his best in a coach voice. He was very bad at it though.

Then he grabbed my hand and started jogging. It was a simple pace that almost anyone on the cross-country team could take. I wished I could be on the team again. Only nothing can come from wishing with all your heart. You had to actually do something, not just wish, for something to change.

We ran in a perfect silence. The cool night air seemed to surround Jaxon and I, enclosing us in a bubble, in our our world. A world where a blind girl could run cross-country. A world where my Mom didn't have cancer. A world where dreams do come true.

Only when the sun rose, our bubble shattered and we were left in the real world.

. . .

As the weeks went by, Jaxon kept me on my toes by waking me up at 4AM, every school morning and we got up at 6AM on Saturday. I had to study for tests, and listen to the announcements, which were honestly depressing. The girls cross-country team was getting their ass kicked bad.

I also learned that Jaxon ran cross-country along with my brother. The BOYS cross-country team was doing okay. Always getting second place at everything though. It was like that for the girls most of last year too. Our school was always just number two.

My friends and I welcomed the E's and Jaxon into our little group nicely. The only place they fit in was with the 'Meteor Kids'. Better than the popular ones. My Mom went to her Breast Cancer thing, five days a week, but I wasn't sure it was working from what she has said.

Of course my real trouble started in Language Arts class on Tuesday, the 27th of September.

It was the middle of class and I was messing around with my pencil and pretending to be busy. I think my teacher has kind of understood that I was blind now, so she doesn't get mad when I don't turn in my papers on time. It does lead to extra homework though. Then someone burst into the otherwise silent classroom.

"Raindrop!" A familiar voice shouted across the class.

"Here!" I said standing up, raising my hand.

"Mr. Augustine!" My teacher, Miss. Smalls, said to Jaxon.

"Sorry Miss. S, but can I borrow Ashley for a bit! It's very important!" Jaxon begged.

I heard Miss. Smalls sigh, then she said, "Don't take to long."

"Yes ma'am! Come on Raindrop, we gotta go!" He said and grabbed my hand. Before I knew it we were running down the hall.

"How did you get in the classroom? I thought all the doors were locked!"

"Beth gave me a key." He said. I knew that name from somewhere that just couldn't place. Then it hit me. She was a girl who ran cross-country.

"Who gave it to her?" I asked.

"Coach Smith." Jaxon said, and we continued to run.

"So..?"

"So I could get you." Jaxon said, the stopped dead, and I almost tripped over him, "I have a plan for them to let you run cross-country."
