Chapter Twenty-Three

"For most people, a hospital is a scary place. A hostile place. A place where bad things happen. Most people would prefer church, or school, or home. But I grew up here. While my mom was on rounds, I learned to read in the O.R. gallery. I played in the morgue. I colored with crayons on old E.R. charts. The hospital was my church, my school, my home. The hospital was my safe place. My sanctuary. I love it here. Correction: loved it here"

"i know you'd have gone insane if you saw what i saw"

"they tell you that you're lucky but you're so confused"

Charles and Kate were walking down the halls of the hospital. He started kissing her. She laughed. "Charles, we're working", she smiled. "Fine"

He pecked her on the cheek and she smiled. They walked past Gary Clark, not thinking anything of it.

Meredith, Cristina and Lucy were in the tunnels. "No way", Cristina and Lucy said in unison. "Yeah", Meredith replied.

"No freaking way!"

"Right?"

"Were you trying to...", Lucy asked.

"No! Total accident. I used the thing"

"So are we happy about this?"

"Or are we exercising our legal right to choose?" Cristina added. Meredith smiled.

"Ok! All right!"

"Congratulations! Let's hug it out", Lucy said. "I'm gonna be an aunt!" They hugged. "Have you told him?" Cristina asked. "No, I just found out", Meredith said. "You gonna tell him now?" Lucy asked.

"Yeah"

"I'm gonna be an aunt! This is very adult. I'm proud of you, Meredith Grey"

"I'm proud of me, too"

Lucy and Alex were in the ER. "Alex, can we talk about the divorce papers?" she asked.

"Oh, so now you wanna talk?"

"Alex..."

"No, how about we talk about it later? Does that sound familiar?"

She scoffed and he walked away. Gary Clark approached her. "Do you know where the chief's office is?" he asked.

"Sorry, I'm kinda busy right now. Can you ask a nurse or something?"

She walked off.

Bailey, Charles and Kate were with their patient Mary and her husband Bill. "Shut up", Mary said. "I'm sorry. I'm truly sorry", Bailey said.

"Honey, are you hearing this?"

"I told you", Bill replied. "You know, I told her, Dr B".

"That doesn't mean I like it. I really can't have my second surgery today?"

"Dr Smith", Bailey said. "Your hemoglobin and hematocrit are extremely low", Kate explained. "Your tank is empty. You need a blood transfusion before we can operate". "Shut up", Mary said.

"Sorry"

"Do you know how long I've been living with a colostomy bag? A bag of my poop is attached to me. Do you know what that's like? It's gross. It's truly the grossest thing I've ever had to deal with. And I'm starving, because I can't eat solid food for 24 hours before surgery. Starving. I would eat all of you if I could"

"Yeah, on the plus side, that means no poop in the bag", Bill said.

"Bill!"

"Ok, we're gonna get some blood in you and Dr Percy and Dr Smith are gonna monitor your blood levels", Bailey said. "And tomorrow, we'll see if we can help you lose the poop bag. Let's see if we can get you some food so you don't eat my doctors. I don't like them but they're useful".

"Can I have real food? Like pizza? From that one place near that one spot? With pepperoni and sausage and ham?"

"If you get the pizza, you also get the bowel prep and enema that comes with it"

"Totally worth the pizza. Bring it on"

"Back in 15 minutes", Bill said, kissing her. He left the room. "How hot is my husband's ass?" Mary commented. "It's very hot, m'am", Charles replied. Kate laughed. "Your turn, how beautiful is my girlfriend?" Charles said to Mary. "Very beautiful. You make a great couple", Mary smiled. Kate smiled at Charles and pecked his lips.

Alex and Lucy were still in the ER waiting for patients. "Alex, will you please talk to me?" she asked. "You know we have to talk about this". As Alex was about to respond, a large bang sounded. "Did you hear that?" Alex asked.

"Hear what?"

He started walking away. "Alex Karev, I am not done talking with you!" she yelled after him. She heard another bang and jumped. "Alex?" she called. She made her way after him and saw him lying on the floor blood spilling out of him. She screamed.

She knelt down in front of him. "Alex, are you okay?!" she asked. "Please don't die. Alex?!"

"Calm down. Calm down, okay? I'm gonna be fine. You just need to help me to the elevator, okay? We're gonna be fine"

"Okay. Okay"

She dragged him to the elevator, leaving a trail of blood behind them. He breathed shakily as the doors closed. "You're gonna be fine. You're gonna be fine", she whispered. She sat in the corner with her knees against her chest.

Owen, Teddy, Beck and Jackson were operating on their gunshot victim. "I'm looking at injuries to the pulmonary artery and the vein", Teddy said. "Hold pressure in there". "More lap bands", Owen said. "I'm going to try a temporary... Satinsky clamp"

Aurora walked into a supply closet writing in a chart when she slipped and hit her face on the floor. She groaned in pain. She felt her nose and felt blood and she sighed. She then looked at her hands. Blood. Her scrubs. Blood. She realised her entire body was covered in blood. She looked behind her to see Reed Adamson with a gunshot wound on her forehead and blood spilling out of head. She tried to catch her breath. She started panicking.

Aurora entered Derek's office, breathless. "Aurora", he greeted before looking up and noticing she was covered in blood. She was shaking. "Aurora, what was it?" Derek asked.

"I..."

"What happened?"

"You know, you don't think of people as having that much blood. I mean, you learn in med school how many pints we all have in us, but you don't realise until you see it. You don't get how much blood... There was so much blood"

"Aurora, Aurora, Aurora! Shhh! You're in shock. It's all right. Tell me what happened"

"Reed Adamson, she's dead. Someone shot her"

Alex was shaking in the elevator. He had become pale. Lucy was rocking herself back and forth. "We're gonna be fine. We're gonna be fine", she muttered repeatedly. "Alex? Are you still there? Alex?!" She crawled over to him shakily and realised he was unconscious. "Alex, no!" she exclaimed. She lay her head on his chest. "You can't leave me alone. Please don't leave me alone", she whispered. "I need you. Don't go, Alex. Don't go".

Derek was on the phone while Aurora changed scrubs. "The police are on their way. What's the procedure?", he said. "You're the head of hospital security. How do you not know? I know it's never happened before. I found it. "Lockdown. Nobody moves in or out". Yeah. Nobody moves, nobody breathes until we know what's going on". He put down the phone. "Here", he said to Aurora, rubbing the blood off her face with a tissue. "Police are almost here. I'm gonna leave you here. You ok by yourself?"

"You're leaving... You just said that nobody leaves, nobody moves..."

"Nobody but me. I'm the chief. This is my hospital"

"But what if you get shot, or... Derek!"

"Be right back. I'm the chief"

She put her head in her hands.

The monitor was beeping in the gunshot patient's surgery. "I can't get control of his artery", Teddy said. "He's crashing!" Owen said.

"I need more light and another clamp!"

Derek came in. "How's it going in here?" Derek asked. "Touch and go!" Owen said.

"Avery, got a second?"

"Getting in with administration?" Beck teased. "Shut up", Jackson said and made his way over to Derek. Derek left after a few moments. "What did Shepherd want?" Owen asked. Jackson didn't respond. "Dr Avery?" Owen repeated. "Nothing, just wanted to know how long we'd be. He needs the OR", Jackson replied.

"Ok, get in here and suction around where Dr Altman's working"

Jackson's hands were shaking. "Shaky hand, Dr Avery?" Owen asked. "Won't make it as a surgeon if you can't keep your hands steady". "Yes, sir", he replied. Beck nudged him discreetly. "Are you ok?" she whispered. He nodded shakily.

Kelly approached Mark at the nurses station. "Lockdown. Kind of crazy, right? Think it's serious?" he said.

"I hope not, I wanna get out early tonight"

"Oh, yeah? Why?"

"I'm thinking about going to dinner. I wouldn't mind some company"

He smirked and kissed her. She laughed. "Sir, you can't leave this area", a nurse said. "The hospital is in...". Gary Clark stood at the top of the stairs and let out two gunshots. Everyone screamed and Mark brought Kelly to the floor, covering her head. Kelly crawled over to where the nurse's dead body lay. "No, no, no", she whispered. "Come on", Mark urged.

"She's dead. She's dead"

"Come on. I'm getting you out of here"

He stood her up and they started rushing towards the elevator with Mark covering her head. He pressed the elevator button and they waited as the chaos continued around them. "Come on. Come on!" Mark yelled, banging on the elevator. The elevator dinged and the doors finally opened revealing Alex with blood surrounding him and Lucy with her head on his chest. "No, please!" she yelled, put her shaky hands in the air before she saw who it was. "You have to help!"

Mark laid Alex on a conference room table while Kelly followed him in with a handful of supplies and Lucy followed them numbly, not knowing what to do. "I grabbed everything I could think of", Kelly said. "I am so incredibly pissed off right now", Alex said through gritted teeth. "Alex, you've been shot", Mark informed. "We have to get him out of here", Lucy said. "He could come back. We have to get him out of here".

"There's no exit wound. No exit wound. We're gonna have to flip him. Kelly, grab him under the shoulders"

"We have to get him out of here", Lucy repeated.

"He's losing blood. We can't move him, now shut up and let us help him!"

They flipped him and he groaned in pain. "Nothing. Damn, the bullet's still in there somewhere", Mark said. "We're just gonna have to wing it. Start an IV. I'll set up a chest tube". "Alex, you're gonna be ok. All right?" Lucy whispered to him. "I'm gonna kick that guy's ass when I see him", Alex said, shaking.

Charles and Kate rushed into Mary's room where Bailey was. "He's on the floor", Charles said, holding onto Kate's hand like it was a lifeline. "Who?" Bailey asked. "The shooter", Kate said breathlessly.

"A shoot... There's a shooter in the hospital?"

"Oh, my God '', Mary said. Bailey watched from the window of the door as Gary Clark shot two people. She turned back to them. "Dr Percy, Dr Smith, hide!" she said. "What?" Charles asked.

"Just hide! Mary, play dead. Do not move, do not breathe"

Kate grabbed Charles' hand and pulled him into the bathroom. She put her head in her hands. Charles pulled her hands away from her face and kissed them. "Stop worrying", he whispered, tucking loose strands of hair away from her face. "We're gonna be fine". She nodded numbly. They heard him enter the room. Kate closed her eyes and tried to breathe. Charles accidentally fell against the wall slightly, making a noise. "No, no, no", Kate muttered repeatedly. "Please". The door opened and Gary Clark entered the bathroom. "Please. I...", Charles stuttered, stepping in front of Kate. "Are you a surgeon?" Gary asked.

"Please"

"Are you a surgeon?"

"Yes, sir. Yes, sir, I am"

Gary raised his gun. "Sir, please don't!" Kate said, through tears. "Please, I'm begging you!" Gary Clark shot Charles. Kate screamed. Charles fell, groaning in pain. He pointed the gun at Kate. "Are you a surgeon?" he asked her.

"You're a disgusting man"

He shot her. She fell to the floor, gasping for air. Charles shakily grabbed her hand. She made eye contact with Bailey who was hiding under the bed. Gary walked in front of them before walking to the end of the bed. He pulled Bailey out from under the bed. "Are you a surgeon?" he asked. "Answer me!"

"No! No! I'm a...a nurse. I'm a nurse. I'm a...nurse"

"I'm sorry...for the trouble. For the mess. I'm sorry"

Kate let out a choked sob.

"You're doing great, Alex, really great. Now...", Mark said. "I need to put in a chest tube. You're with me, ok?" "No chest tube", Alex said weakly. "I'm ok. Don't cut me".

"Kelly, you get the Betadine ready. I'll do the rest, ok?"

"Ok", she replied. Alex started screaming in pain and Lucy stroked his cheek, trying to calm him down. "Shut him up. Shut him up", Mark said. He continued to groan in pain. Kelly shushed him. "Alex...", she said. He screamed louder. "Shut him up, Kelly. If that guy with the gun hears the screaming, he's gonna head this way", Mark said. "Now do something to shut him up!" "Alex, I know that it hurts, but you have to be quiet", Lucy whispered, still stroking his cheek. "Ok?" Alex screamed again. Kelly put a tissue in his mouth and held it there. "I'm sorry", she whispered.

Kate and Charles were groaning in pain as they held onto each other's hands. Bailey tried to stop both of them bleeding out. "He shot me. He shot me. I'm shot", Charles said weakly. "You're going to be ok. Both of you", Bailey assured. "Mary, over there, some gauze and surgical pads. Get them for me". "I don't wanna die. I don't wanna die", Kate whispered.

"And you won't. Mary! I need you to pull yourself together and bring me those supplies. Ok?"

"I was just hanging out with my girlfriend who I never thought I had a shot with in the first place, and now I'm shot?" Charles said. "Charles, we're okay", Kate reassured.

"Kate..."

"We're okay. I have you"

Bailey started using the lap pads on them. "Mary, go over to the window and see if there's anybody out there that can help us", Bailey said. "Mary, come on! Come on! Come on! Go to the window now! See if somebody can help us. Go on". Tears started falling from Kate's face and she gasped. "There's no one to help us", Mary cried. Bailey looked at Kate's tear-stained face. "Mary, wipe Kate's face", Bailey said and Mary did so. "We're all going to be fine".

"Ok, he's ready for transport", Teddy said. "Jackson and Beck, you can get him up to the ICU", Owen said. "Start warming him up...". "I can't, sir", Jackson said, pulling his mask off.

"Excuse me?"

"We can't leave here. That's what Shepherd told me. There's a shooter in the hospital. We're supposed to stay here"

"I'm sorry, there's a what?" Beck asked, the colour draining from her face.

"Shepherd said..."

"This patient is hypothermic", Owen said. "We need to start warming him up before he starts to circle the drain. You didn't bother to mention this until now?"

"Shepherd said..."

"You didn't bother..."

"Shepherd said!"

"You already told me what Shepherd said! Ok... I'll take him up myself. Everyone else, stay here"

"I'm coming", Teddy piped up.

"No, you stay put"

"I'm a cardiothoracic surgeon. He has a penetrating injury to his chest. You don't get a vote this time. I'm coming. Let's go"

They wheeled the patient out of the OR. "Oh, my God", Beck whispered. "Oh, my God!"

Kelly checked Alex's heartbeat with a stethoscope. "BP's 60/palp", she said. "He's losing a lot of blood", Mark said. "Damn it. He needs a transfusion. I don't know what we're gonna do".

"I'll go. I'll go get it"

"That's insane. I'll go"

"No. I don't know what to do. You know what to do. I don't... I can't do nothing"

She made her way over to him and kissed him. "I love you. I'll be right back", she said before leaving the room. "Please don't kill him", Lucy said to Mark as she stroked Alex's cheek. "Doing my best", Mark replied.

Bailey placed oxygen masks over Charles' and Kate's faces. "Mary, see the sticky circles there?" she asked. "Give me six of those. And the thing with the wires". "I'm dying", Charles said.

"No, you're not dying"

"Don't lie to me. And if you have to save only one of us. Save her, not me. She deserves it"

"Charles, stop. You're not dying. We're not dying", Kate argued. "You are not dying. If you were, I would tell you, ok?" Bailey said. Charles and Kate continued to hold hands as they tried to catch their breaths.

Aurora looked out the office window to see Derek. Before taking a second glance, she rushed out to him. "Derek! Thank God you're back!" she sighed. He turned around to her and she realised who the man in front of him was. Derek turned back around and Gary pointed the gun at him and shot him. Derek fell to the ground. "No!" Aurora yelled.
