Chapter Twenty-Four

"The human life is made up of choices. Yes or no? In or out? Up or down? And then there are the choices that matter: to love or hate, to be a hero or to be a coward, to fight or to give in, to live or die... Live or die? That's the important choice, and it's not always in our hands. Yes or no? In or out? Up or down? Live or die? Hero or coward? Fight or give in? I'll say it again, to make sure you hear me: the human life is made up of choices. Live or die? That's the important choice... and it's not always in our hands"

"i felt alive and i can't complain but now take me home. take me home, where i belong"

"every scrap of you would be taken from me"

Derek was panting as he lay on the floor, blood spilling from his chest. Aurora ran over to him, breathless with tears in her eyes. Gary pointed his gun at her. She raised her hands. "Please, don't!" she exclaimed. "Please don't shoot me. I don't wanna die. I have so much I still need to do. I wanna live. Please don't shoot. I wanna live. Let me live. Please. Please. I'm a person. I was someone's child. I'm someone's sister. I'm someone's best friend. I'm someone's... I'm someone! I am a person! Please! Please! Please! Please". "Run", Gary said. She gasped and ran through the double doors.

She found April sitting with her knees against her chest against a wall, shaking. She sat down beside her and put her hand in hers.

Cristina came over to them with a wheelchair. "April, Aurora. Come on. We're taking Derek down to the OR", Cristina urged. "Teddy, she's in the OR. She can save him. Come on". "I saw on Oprah or somewhere that if you tell them details about yourself, they're less likely to kill you", Aurora said. "I saw that, too", April whispered. "Get up! Come on! Come on!" Cristina snapped. "Follow me. Just follow me". They got up, still clutching each other's hands for dear life.

"Gotta eat more bacon", Alex muttered. "What's that?" Lucy asked him.

"You stop yourself from doing a lot of crap that you want to do in life. I mean, I'm probably dying now and I'm telling you, you gotta eat more bacon"

"We'll eat more bacon together because you're not dying. Just hang on. Kelly will be back any minute. Just hang on, please"

Kelly was wheeling a cart with supplies back to the conference room when Gary Clark appeared in front of her. "Mr Clark...", she said.

"I didn't plan to shoot all those people"

"Of course you didn't... No, you were sad, you were grieving"

"I only planned to shoot Dr Shepherd. And Dr Webber. And Dr Jacobs. She unplugged the machines. But you were too"

"No, Mr Clark, please..."

He pointed his gun at her. She put her hand in the air as she shot his gun. The bullet hit her hand and she fell down behind the cart. Another gun shot off and Gary fell over. She looked behind her to see a SWAT team member with a gun. She got back up, panting and rushed off with the cart.

She rushed back into the conference room, panting. "What happened?" Mark asked. "H-he was there. He shot me, Mark. He tried to kill me. He shot me", she said.

"Kelly, calm down"

"He shot me. I don't know what... What are we going to do? We're gonna die. We're gonna die. We're gonna..."

Mark grabbed his face and shushed her quietly. He grabbed her injured hand and looked at her. "Grab some bandages and press them to the wound", he said. "And then help me save him". She nodded and grabbed the bandages. "Mark, he's unconscious", Lucy said in a shaky voice. "Don't die, Alex. Please don't die. I'm sorry. I love you. Do you hear me? I love you".

Cristina, Meredith, April and Aurora were in the OR. Derek was on the table. "Mer, April, you prep him", Cristina said. "Aurora and I are gonna go find Teddy. She could still be on this floor. Everything's gonna be fine. Ok, Mer? I promise. Ok".

"None of the packing is holding", Bailey said. "What does that mean?" Mary asked.

"It means I need to get them to an OR. We need to get them to an OR. That is their only chance, if they're gonna survive this"

Aurora and Cristina cautiously made their way down the halls. "It's creepy quiet down here", Cristina commented. "What if he's down here?" Aurora whispered.

"He's not down here"

"I don't wanna get shot"

"Will you shut up? You're freaking me out and I don't have time to be freaked out right now. Mer is a mess, Derek is a mess, you are a mess, and I am in charge. And I say that no one is down here"

The door of the OR opened and they ducked. "Please", Aurora whispered. Jackson and Beck came out of the door. "Aurora?" she said. They got up and Aurora hugged her tightly. "Thank God you're ok", Beck sighed. "You are not supposed to be walking around", Jackson said. Beck looked at Cristina's bloody arm. "Is that your blood? Are you ok?" Beck asked. "No, I'm fine. I'll go get Altman", Cristina said.

"Altman's not down here"

"Hunt"

"They left"

"What, they left?! Ok, you know what? Someone shot Derek. He's got a GSW to the chest. And he needs surgery right now. Tell me there's an attending on this floor!"

They were silent. "Aurora, behind us in the OR there are two OR nurses and an anesthesiologist. Get them", Jackson said. "Tell them to set up for a cardiac procedure". "Who's operating?" Aurora asked. "I am", Cristina said.

Alex opened his eyes to see Lucy, still stroking his cheek. "Lucy?" he whispered.

"Alex? It's me, hi. Alex..."

"Lucy? I'm sorry. Don't go. We got married, please don't go..."

"I'm not going anywhere"

"You came back for me, Lucy"

"I came back"

"Don't ever leave me. Don't ever leave me again"

"I won't. I won't ever leave you. We're always gonna be together, ok? Always"

The door opened and they turned around. The SWAT team was at the door. "This floor is clear. We're going to evacuate you now", the member said. Kelly sighed in relief and Mark brought her into his chest.

Mark and Kelly wheeled Alex over to Teddy with Lucy following them. "GSW to the right chest. We put in a chest tube", Mark explained. "He's got three liters of LR and two units of packed cells". "Alright, let's get him into the ambulance. Call Seattle Pres, let them know we're coming!" Teddy said. Teddy got into the ambulance and Mark helped Lucy into the ambulance then he and Kelly got in.

Cristina and Jackson were operating with Aurora assisting and Beck watching. "Do you feel anything? Can you see where the blood's coming from?" Jackson asked Cristina. "Not yet. Damn it, I can't see anything. Give me some suction", Cristina replied. "It's right by the aorta".

"You can do this"

"I know that. I just wanted it to be easy. Not the hardest freaking repair in the history of the world! I don't know what to do. There's massive bleeding in the lungs. There is a bullet lodged right next to the aorta and a huge hematoma"

"Would Teddy use a graft or a clamp and sew?" Beck said. "Pig or cow? Pig or cow, Cristina?"

"Clamp and sew. Definitely clamp and sew. Give me a clamp"

"Badass"

Bailey and Mary were dragging Charles and Kate through the hall. "How much further?" Mary asked. "We're gonna get them on the elevator", Bailey replied. "And then we'll be right at the OR floor. We're almost there. We're almost there, ok, Charles? Kate? You ok?" "We're almost there?" Charles asked. "See, babe, I told you we'd be fine", Kate said.

"I know, for once I was the worrier"

Kate weakly laughed. Bailey pressed the elevator button and waited. "Dr B?" Mary asked. "There's a hum elevators make when they're on. There's a hum", Bailey said. "There's no hum".

"What does that mean?"

"It means the elevators...they're off! The elevators aren't working! The elevators aren't working! We need to get to the OR! Turn the elevators back on! Turn them back on! Damn it! Turn the elevators back on!"

Kate grabbed Charles' hand. "What are we gonna do?" Mary asked. Bailey took off her gloves and sat down on the floor. "Mary, help me to turn them to face each other", she said and they did so. Bailey helped them take off oxygen masks. "We're dying, right?" Charles said. "Yes. Yes, Charles, you and Kate are dying". Kate started to cry and Charles put his hands on her face. He started to cry. "I don't want you to worry. I don't want you to be afraid", Bailey said. "'Cause you're together. And Mary and I are here. And we're not going to leave, ok? You are not alone. Neither of you are alone".

Gary entered the OR and started pointing his gun at Cristina. Owen entered the OR and Gary turned the gun to him. "Just calm down. Calm down. Tell me what the problem is", Owen said. "Owen!" Aurora said, tears streaming down her face.

"I'm here"

"Owen"

Gary pointed the gun at Aurora and she gasped. "Hold on!" Owen yelled. "Do you want me to shoot her?" Gary asked him. "Stop fixing him! Let him die! Let him lie there and die! I will shoot you! I will shoot all of you!" Aurora let out a choked sob. "No", she mumbled. "Jackson, clamp the hilum so we get control of hemorrhage, so I can get visualisation", Cristina instructed. "Don't you dare!" Gary snapped.

"Clamp the hilum so I can see!"

Aurora handed Cristina the instruments and Gary pressed the gun further into her head. "Stop or I will shoot you!" he yelled. "Hey!" Owen yelled. "That is the woman I love. If you shoot her, you touch her, I will kill you!" "I didn't want this. I just wanted to shoot Shepherd, shoot Dr Jacobs and shoot Dr Webber", Gary said. Jackson locked eyes with Beck. Gary noticed her and started pointing the gun at her. She held up her hands. "Please don't shoot me", she said. "No one will mourn me. I got dropped off at a foster home when I was a month old. I never knew my parents. They didn't care about me. I lived in a foster home for most of my life. I've been scared for almost all of my life. And I'm scared now. I don't want to die scared. If you shoot me, and I die... I have no family. No one will care. No one will mourn me. Please don't...". "You were there", Gary said. "You unplugged her machines. Your hands killed my Alison".

"No, I didn't. Please"

"You killed her"

"Please"

He shot her in the stomach and she fell to the floor, gasping for air. She felt her stomach and looked at her fingers which were now covered in blood. She took in a shaky breath. Jackson tried to concentrate on the surgery while worrying about Beck. "Shoot me", Meredith said, coming into the OR. "You want justice, right? Your wife died. I know what happened. Derek told me the story. Dr Webber? He was your wife's doctor. I'm the closest thing he has to a daughter. And the man on the table, I'm his wife. If you wanna hurt them the way that you hurt...shoot me. I'm your eye for an eye". He pointed the gun at her. "Wait! She's pregnant", Cristina said. "You wouldn't shoot a woman who's pregnant? Please". Owen moved to take the gun but Gary turned around and shot him. Owen fell to the floor. "No!" Aurora screamed. "No!" "Shut up!" Gary yelled, pointing the gun at her. "Raise your hands", Jackson said. "What?" Aurora asked.

"Trust me, raise your hands!"

"I'm stopping!" Cristina said, as all three of them raised their hands. "See? I've stopped". "Listen to me, in a few seconds, his heart is going to pump blood into his chest and stop beating", Jackson explained. "You'll see it on the monitor. Just wait. Wait for it. Watch the monitor and wait for it". "Please, don't stop!" Meredith exclaimed.

"Shut up!"

The monitor flatlined. "See? It's over", Aurora said. "It's over. He's dead". He left the OR. Cristina and Jackson put their hands down and continued operating. Cristina looked at Beck gasping for air on the floor. "Jackson, get Beck and take her to another room. Try and get her cleaned up as best as you can", Cristina ordered. "Aurora, take his place". Jackson stepped away and picked up Beck bridal-style and carried her away. "Meredith? Can you check if Owen is dead?" Aurora asked. Meredith was silent.

"Meredith! Is Owen dead?!"

Meredith crawled over to Owen and listened to his chest. "He's alive. He's alive. He's unconscious, but he's alive", Meredith informed. Aurora sighed in relief. "Take Owen to the OR across the way and take that bullet out. Get April to help", Cristina said.

Jackson put Beck down on a table. "Ow, it hurts!" she exclaimed.

"Sorry"

"Thank God, there's an exit wound"

"Still hurts, though"

"Yeah, I know and I'm gonna treat it, don't worry"

He applied pressure to the wound and she screamed in pain. "Shh! Sorry, sorry", he said.

"Can you distract me or something? Talk to me"

"Oh, um..."

"Ok, talk to me faster!"

"Sorry, right. What's your happiest memory?"

"What kind of a question is that? You just been keeping that in the back of your mind?"

"Answer it if you wanna keep talking"

"Ok. At the foster home, we used to sleep in these bunk-beds. I had the bottom one and I was always scared when the lights would go out. I felt trapped. I was ten, so... Anyway, one of the bigger girls... Her name was Kathy. She bought me these fairy lights and hung them on the roof of the bottom bunk. I'd turn them on at night and I'd just feel...invincible. Like I could take on the world. I know it sounds stupid, but..."

"It's not stupid. Where's Kathy now?"

"She... Some of the older boys smashed a window and stabbed her with some shards of glass and... That was the end of Kathy"

"That was the person close to you who died"

"Yeah. Man, you're good at this"

"I am a doctor"

"No, not that. The talking thing. You're gonna some girl really happy someday"

"You think so?"

"I know so"

He smiled at her. "Alright, I'm done", he said.

"I wanna get up. Help me?"

"Yeah"

He grabbed her hands and pulled her up, leaving them face to face, noses touching. They locked eyes and her eyes were drawn to his lips. "I might kiss you", Jackson whispered.

"I might let you"

He leaned and kissed her softly before pulling away. She smiled at him. "You make me nervous", he whispered.

"I make you nervous?"

"Don't let it get to your head"

"I'll try my best"

"I don't hurt anymore", Kate said. "Pain's gone. That's a bad sign, isn't it?". "Yes", Bailey replied. Charles caressed her cheeks, tucking strands of hair behind her ears. She smiled weakly with half-lidded eyes. "I love you", Charles whispered. "I always loved you. I thought you never knew but I loved you since the moment I saw you. I love your smile. I love your laugh. I love your beautiful big blue eyes". "I love you, too", Kate replied tearfully. "I always loved you, too. Everything about you. Even the things I don't like, I always did. I love you".

"I wanted to spend my life with you. We were gonna get married and have kids. We were gonna become surgeons. We were gonna be so happy together"

"I really wanted to marry you. But I'm happy right now. Looking at you, being with you. I'm happy"

"Then I'm happy, too"

"Charles, we're meant to be. I love..."

Her eyes stilled and her breath stopped. Charles started crying and stroking her cheek. "Don't leave me, Kate. Please don't", he whispered. "I had a ring in my pocket today. I was gonna propose tonight. We were supposed to be happy. Happy". His eyes stilled and his breath stopped. Bailey sighed and looked at their hands, still clutched tightly together. She reached into Charles' pocket and found the box. She took the ring out and slipped it onto Kate's finger.

Cristina and Aurora were operating as Meredith held Derek's head. "Ok, I'm almost done, just finishing up the pericardial repair", Cristina informed. The monitor started beeping. "V-fib!" Aurora said.

Mark, Kelly and Lucy entered Seattle Pres, outside Alex's room. Teddy stood outside the door. She explained what happened in surgery and that he was fine. Lucy sighed in relief and made her way into the room. She stroked his cheek. Mark and Kelly gripped each other's hands.

"Give me the internal pads!" Cristina ordered. "Give me one of epi!" Aurora added.

"Charge to 50. Clear!"

"Epi going in", Aurora said. "Charge again to 50", Cristina said.

The monitor returned to a regular rhythm. "We got him", Aurora sighed. "We got him". They all breathed sighs of relief. Aurora locked eyes with Owen and smiled.
