Chapter Twenty

"We're doctors - we're trained to care for human beings and we're pretty sure we know what to look for. Cuts, infection, genetic mutation. As doctors we have an arsenal of weapons at the ready. Antibiotics to kill infections. Narcotics to fight pain. Scalpels and retractors to remove tumors and cancers - to eradicate the threat. But just the physical threat, for every other kind - you're on your own"

"i didn't have it in myself to go with grace 'cause when i'd fight you used to tell me i was brave"

Meredith and Lucy joined Cristina and Beck on the catwalk where they were watching Derek's office. "So is it true you helped Teddy and Mark deliver Little Sloan's baby?" Lucy asked Cristina. "Yeah, not now", Cristina snapped.

"What's wrong with you?" Meredith asked. "Tom Evans, in with your husband", Beck replied

"That's Tom Evans. He seems a lot younger than..."

"Try and be cool", Cristina said. Derek and Tom came out of the office. "And here they are. Your cruise directors, Dr Yang and Dr Jacobs", Derek said. "Dr, Evans, hi. Hi", Cristina gushed. "Dr Evans, it's nice to meet you", Beck said, giving Cristina a weird look.

"Hi, I'm Cristina Yang. I'm a huge fan"

"I'm a normal fan"

"Cristina's a bit of a groupie but you can forgive her because she's one of the finest cardio residents you'll meet", Derek said. "And of course Dr Jacobs is our up and comer". "Quite a recommendation", Tom said. "You two scrubbing in with me today?" "Yes", Cristina answered enthusiastically. "I'm not, I just wanted to meet you", Beck added.

"It's an honour and a privilege. Here are the patient charts and the most recent labs. If there's anything else you need, just ask. I'll be around all day following you. If that's ok with you"

"And I'll be there to make sure she's not collecting your hair"

"She's a groupie, I like her", Tom chuckled. "This is my wife, Dr Meredith Grey, and my sister, Dr Lucy Shepherd", Derek introduced. "Pleasure to meet you", Meredith said. "Yes, a pleasure", Lucy agreed. "Likewise. I hear great things about both of you", Tom replied. "Of course I hear them from husband and brother so, grain of salt". They all chuckled, Cristina a little too enthusiastically. "Dr Yang, he's all yours", Derek said. Cristina and Beck led him to the patient. Derek, Lucy and Meredith chuckled. "Think she's gonna drool on him?" Derek asked. "Yes", Meredith and Lucy said in unison. Derek's phone rang. "I gotta go. I'll see you guys soon", he said before walking away. Jackson and April approached them. "Is that Thomas Evans from Baylor?" Jackson asked. "Yes, but don't get too excited", Lucy said. "He's only here for one case". "Oh, are you sure?" April asked. "Because I overheard Chief Shepherd discussing the fact that Dr Altman doesn't have a permanent contract, so it would be a really genius move on the chief's part to go in...". "Here we go again", Jackson said. "What?" Meredith asked. "Shut up", April snapped at Jackson. "She thinks your husband walks on water", Jackson said.

"I don't. I don't. I... No, I'm... I mean... It's a professional thing. It's... It's a mentor thing. He's just my mentor. 'Cause he's married...to you. And you guys are so great. And... Together. Together, as a married couple. You... You... You're so great. I... I do... I do think that your husband is brilliant, but I'm sure that you think that, too. Ok, then"

April walked off. "Thank you", Jackson said. Lucy snorted. "God, I thought that would never end", she sighed. "Seriously, what is with people and my brother, has he got a chocolate-flavoured penis or something?" Jackson chuckled but Meredith still looked astonished from April's little speech.

Kelly, Beck, Aurora and Kate were in the resident's lounge. "I did something wrong", Kate blurted, causing them to look at her. "Wrong like mass murder or wrong like ran a red light?" Beck asked.

"Somewhere in between"

"Ooh, that's a tough one"

"What'd you do?" Kelly asked.

"I slept with Charles"

"You slept with Charles?"

"Yes and I haven't told Ethan and now I need to break up with him. And he's a great guy. What I did was wrong"

"You don't like Ethan", Beck scoffed.

"What? Yes I do"

"No, you don't. You like Charles"

"That's not true"

"Correction, she loves Charles", Aurora teased.

"Not helping"

"Alright, all jokes aside", Kelly said. "Kate, you met Ethan like a month ago. You've been in love with Charles for over three years and he obviously likes you back so what's stopping you? What's holding you back from letting yourself be happy?"

Derek, Mark and Aurora were watching Sloan's baby. "You can see it, right?" Mark asked. "What am I supposed to be seeing?" Aurora asked. "The resemblance?" Derek said.

"It's a newborn. It resembles other newborns"

"Ok. All right, fine. But you want incontrovertible proof?" Mark said. "Here we go. Look at that". He unbuttoned the bottom of the baby's shirt. Derek looked vaguely impressed and Aurora looked confused. "Oh. Oh, it's impressive, I'll give you that", Derek said. "I mean, a lot of that swelling is from the birth. It will go down". "I have no words", Aurora muttered. "He's a Sloan", Mark said confidently. "He's a Sloan".

"Gross, Mark, fucking gross"

Derek, April, Meredith, Jackson and Beck were in the elevator up to the roof. "It was a fishing boat accident. Two patients, one with a head lac and abdominal pain", April explained. "The other, something about a fish hook stuck somewhere". "Why would they send a chopper for a guy with a fish hook?" Beck questioned. "I should be with Tom Evans right now". "Jacobs, no complaining but why would they send a chopper for a guy with a fish hook?" Derek said. "I'm pretty sure they said fish hook, Chief Shepherd '', April said quietly, smiling. Meredith rolled her eyes and Beck furrowed her brows. The elevator doors opened and Derek and April rushed out to the helicopter. "I'm pretty sure they said fish hook, Chief Shepherd '', Jackson mocked, causing Beck to start laughing. "If I'm wrong, you can spank me. Chief Shepherd, I do hope I'm wrong". Meredith joined in with Beck's laughter as they joined April and Derek at the helicopter. "What do we got?" Derek asked as they walked over to where Bailey, Alex and Lexie were with the patient. "We got the son, head laceration, crush injuries. The dad's right behind", Bailey explained. "Let's go!" Bailey, Alex and Lexie led the son away and the paramedics brought over the father. "Fifty-year-old male, penetrating trauma to the chest", the paramedic explained. "Hypotensive in the field. Got him two liters of LR en route". The patient had a big fishing hook lodged in his side. "Oh, big hook!" April exclaimed. "Big hook!" Meredith, Jackson and Beck repeated in unison.

Owen had joined them in the trauma room with the patient, Walter. They were clamping the fish hook with a big pair of pliers. "Hold steady. Grey, get in there", Owen said. "What do we have? Oh, my God", Teddy said, noticing the giant fish hook.

"Here we go"

"Boat accident. Something fell on him", Beck explained to Teddy. "And the hook?" she asked.

"Looks like he fell on it"

The monitor started beeping. "Pressure's at 68, systolic", Owen said. "Tracheal deviation, absent breath sounds. Get me a 14-gauge needle", Teddy said. "Right behind you", Beck said, preparing the needle. The patient's son, Doug appeared in the doorway. "Dad? What are you doing to him?" he asked. Lexie came up behind him. "Grey, get him out of here", Owen ordered. "I'm trying. Doug, please", Lexie said. "Oh, God! What the hell is that?" Walter asked, looking at the needle in his chest. "Dad, I don't know what happened. I had the rope in my hand one minute...", Doug said. Alex came over to him. "Doug, Doug, come on", Alex urged.

"No, I did this. I'm sorry. Dad. I'm so sorry"

"It's ok. It's not your fault", Lexie reassured. "Of course it's his fault!" Walter exclaimed. "I was thrown on top of the shark hook because he let go of the rope. Who the hell's fault is it?" Alex and Lexie dragged Doug away. "Let's leave the hook in until we get him up to the OR", Owen said. "I'm feeling a depressed skull fracture", April said. "Order a head CT", Derek said.

"Right away, chief"

Beck rolled her eyes and Jackson nudged her and she smacked his arm.

Derek and April entered the OR where Owen, Teddy, Jackson, Meredith and Beck were operating on Walter. "Thought I'd check to see how far along we are", Derek said. "Almost ready to extract the hook. Suction", Owen said. "After they get him off the hook, we'll go in to evacuate the hematoma and plate the skull fragments?" April asked Derek. "No, I thought we'd throw him back in", Derek joked. "Catch and release". April laughed a little too enthusiastically. "Oh, well, that's attractive", Beck muttered and Jackson smiled at her. "Thank you, Dr Kepner '', Derek said. "Well, Walter's lucky. It looks like he doesn't have to lose any lung", Owen said. "Yeah, no thanks to his kid", Jackson commented. "Well, it was an accident. It happens'', Teddy said. "The kid shouldn't have been there in the first place", Derek said.

"Well, he's the guy's son. Family business. There's something to be said for loyalty"

Teddy looked at Owen and Beck watched them. "Put a person in a job like that because they have the skills to handle it, not because they're your friend", Derek argued. "Or your kid?" "Are you intentionally equating me with the idiot son that dropped the crab cage on his dad, or that just a happy coincidence?" Teddy asked. "Did I miss something?" Beck whispered to Meredith who shrugged. "All right. Ready to extract the hook from the man", Owen announced. "All right, nobody move but Dr Hunt", Derek ordered.

"On my count. One...two..."

Teddy sneezed, moving the body. The monitor started beeping. "Snagged an artery", Owen said. "I'm sorry", Teddy said. "God bless you", Derek said.

Meredith, Beck and Alex were having lunch. "Hook guy is stable for now", Beck stated. "How's the kid?" Meredith asked. "Crappy. Nothing we can do now until we finish with the angio", Alex replied. "Lexie's baby-sitting". "Hey!" Cristina greeted enthusiastically before sitting down. "Have you seen Evans? It was amazing. Who saw?" "I wish. We were with fish hook guy. God, I'm so jealous!" Beck exclaimed through gritted teeth. "Dude, you're like a kid with trading cards", Alex said to Cristina. "Except with heart surgeons". "Yeah. I gotta have 'em all", Cristina said. "I thought Teddy was the love of your life", Beck said.

"She is. She is, but...Evans, brilliant. I mean brilliant. I mean, so is she, but... I love them both. I'm a cardio-thoracic whore. Saying it makes me feel so good".

"Ooh, speaking of whores, Mer?"

"Has anyone seen the love-struck intern fawning over my husband?" Meredith asked.

"April's not an intern"

"Bat your eyes like that, you're an intern"

"Don't worry. That's not Derek's thing", Cristina reassured, earning a look from Alex. "Anymore". "I was the love-struck intern", Meredith continued. "It is his thing". "I'm sure he's grown out of it", Beck said. "Out of what, chicks who shave their legs and laugh at his jokes?" Alex asked. "Sure, he's grown out of it". "I shave my legs", Meredith argued. "Sometimes".

"You could always call him Chief Shepherd"

"Ew, please don't tell me he has a power dynamic kink!" Beck said.

"What? Powerful guys like adoring girls"

"Oh, my God! Shut up!"

Lucy entered the kitchen to see Alex drinking a beer. "Hey, how was your day?" she asked, sitting down and grabbing a beer. He stared at her for a moment. "Can we stop pretending like this is normal?" he asked.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm sleeping with Lexie and we still haven't even talked about the doomed state of our marriage. Are we getting a divorce? Who knows? Because you like to pretend we live in this magical land where our problems don't exist"

"You can be a real ass sometimes"

"Yeah, I can but tell me I'm wrong"

"I was actually just about to ask you if we could talk about it but since you live in this magical land where you always get to be right. Fine. We'll talk about it when you grow up!"

She stormed off.

Kate entered the resident's lounge to get ready to go home when she found Charles sitting waiting for her. She sighed. "Why are you always here?" she asked.

"Well, I was waiting for you"

"Why?"

"You know why. We need to talk"

"Alright, just because Reed doesn't like you back doesn't mean I'm gonna jump at the chance to be your second choice"

"You think that's what this is about?"

"Isn't it?! You've liked Reed since we started our internship"

"No, I've liked you! How could you think I liked Reed?"

"Because you were so obvious about it. You were flirty with her all the time"

"I was just having fun"

"Well, is that what you want? To have "fun" with me? Because I don't wanna have fun. I've liked you ever since I've known you. This isn't a joke to me, Charles"

"It's not a joke to me, either"

"I think it is!"

"It's not!"

"Prove it!"

"I love you, Kate"

Tears filled her eyes. "I love you, too", she whispered. "You do?" he smiled. She nodded. She walked over to him and kissed him and he lifted her up. She chuckled and buried her head in his shoulder as he spun her around.
