Chapter Seventeen
"Surgeons aren't complacent people. We don't put our feet up. We don't sit still. Whatever the game is, we like to win. And once we win, we get a new game. We push ourselves; residents, attending. It doesn't matter how much we achieve. If you're a climber there's always another mountain. They take pictures of mountain climbers at the top of a mountain. They're smiling, ecstatic, triumphant. They don't take pictures along the way cause who wants to remember the rest of it? We push ourselves because we have to, not because we like it. The relentless climb, the pain and anguish of taking it to the next level. Nobody takes pictures of that. Nobody wants to remember. We just wanna remember the view from the top. The breathtaking moment at the edge of the world. That's what keeps us climbing. And it's worth the pain. That's the crazy part. It's worth anything"
"a smile to hide the fear away"
Jackson came out of his patient's room to where Beck was standing. He looked at her. "What?" she asked.
"This... This patient, I can't find the heartbeat"
"That's called death. Call the morgue, dumbass"
"He's not dead. He's sitting up, he's talking"
"You're so lucky you have a famous last name"
"Take a deep breath, sir", Beck said, examining the patient. "Having...trouble doing that", Todd said, breathlessly. "Grow up, Todd", his girlfriend said. "When he was nine, they removed his right lung", Jackson informed Beck. "Now the other one's crapping out on me", Todd added. "Or maybe you're having an anxiety attack because I asked you to move in with me", his girlfriend suggested. "I can't find his heart", Beck said.
"Oh, yeah? Me neither"
"No, I really can't"
"Who's the dumbass now?"
"I can't... I can't...", Todd stuttered, lying down. "Get a stat chest x-ray and page cardio!" Beck exclaimed.
Teddy was checking Todd's heart. "There she is. By your kidney", Teddy said. "My heart is by my kidney?" he asked. "That's why it was hard to hear your heartbeat", Jackson said. "And without a second lung in your chest cavity, your heart sort of drifted", Beck added. "It's called postpneumonectomy syndrome", Teddy explained. "The shifting caused bronchial compression. That's why you weren't able to breathe". "I'm the biggest bitch in the world", his girlfriend sighed, holding his hand. "Can you put it back where it goes?" Todd asked. "Yes. we're gonna use saline implants in your chest to keep it in place", Teddy explained. "Implants? Like what they use for...", his girlfriend said. "Fake boobs", Beck answered. Teddy glared at her and Jackson chuckled. "You wanna put...? I can't have...", Toddy stuttered. "No. I'm a guy. Ok? I'm a guy's guy". "You won't even see them", Beck scoffed.
"Yeah, but still. Come on, man, you know what I'm saying. I mean, how am I supposed to, you know..."
"What, pick up women?" his girlfriend asked. "You mean, how do you explain your boobs to the next chick dumb enough to date you?"
"Molly"
She stormed out. "I'm just gonna say this to get it out of the way, you totally deserved that", Beck stated. "Do I have a choice?" Todd asked.
"Do you like to breathe?"
Callie and Lucy were working in her lab when Bailey came in. "You rang?" Bailey asked. "Yeah", Callie replied. "We're this close to making headway on my cartilage, but I keep getting 42 intern questions an hour. Can they rotate through your service just for today".
"Sure!"
"Thanks", Callie and Lucy said in unison. Bailey started fidgeting with the equipment and Lucy and Callie shared a look. "What's with you?" Lucy asked. "Nothing", Bailey replied. "Is it the guy?" Callie asked. "What guy?" Lucy asked.
"Bailey has a new boytoy"
"Oh, I have to meet him!"
"Alright, shut up!" Bailey snapped. "It's the guy!" Callie and Lucy squealed in unison. "He brought you coffee?" Callie asked. "No", Bailey replied, smiling. "Think I smile like this for coffee? He's making me dinner". "He's cooking?!" Lucy exclaimed. "Keep him around. Wow. So, are you ready?"
"What, for food? I think I can handle it"
"No, for sex"
"What? No! Grow up"
"Oh, give me a break. How many dates have you had?"
"This'll be three"
"Oh, yeah. Third date is the sex date", Callie chimed in. "And he's cooking for you", Lucy added.
"At his home"
"Where he keeps his bed"
"I barely know the man", Bailey defended. "You're gonna know a lot better tomorrow", Lucy muttered. She and Callie giggled. "There is nothing magic about a third date", Bailey continued. "It is possible to eat and go home and not lose your pants in the process". Callie and Lucy hummed in false agreement. "But if it does go that way, am I supposed to sleep over?" Bailey asked. "Oh, no. No, sex on the couch", Lucy replied. "Walk of shame to the car under cover of darkness".
"Do I wear a dress?"
"Uh uh. Casual. Like you don't expect it's gonna happen, but you're ready for it"
"Well, how ready?"
"Like you've prepped the surgical field"
"The su... Oh, for God's sake!"
Callie started writing on a slip of paper. "There is a Ukrainian woman who works at the manicure place across the street", Callie said, handing Bailey the slip of paper. "She will take care of you". Bailey groaned in protest but snatched the slip of paper from her hand before storming out.
Arizona was checking on a little boy who was in a lot of pain. Aurora came in with his results. "Upright chest and KUB are negative", she said. "Go get him set up for a CT with contrast", Arizona said. Aurora nodded and left the room.
Beck was at the nurses station when she witnessed Owen confront Mark over asking Teddy out. Beck looked on in suspicion.
Arizona and Aurora entered Noah's room. "I think we found our problem", Arizona said. "Noah had a cyst on his liver and it ruptured, and that's what's causing the pain", Aurora explained. "Why would he have cysts?" his dad asked.
"They can be congenital or infectious. They're usually benign, but they can rupture with pressure"
"Pressure? What kind of pressure? You mean like a fall? Did Noah take a fall today?"
"No", Noah's mother replied. "Ok, the truth is it doesn't matter what caused the rupture", Arizona interjected. "What matters is that we operate right away".
"Oh, my God. Oh, my God! We were doing bear hugs. We were...I...I hugged him. I hugged him hard. That's when... That's what did this?"
The monitor started beeping. "Noah. What's happening?" his dad asked. "Sloan, get an OR. We're going now", Arizona ordered.
Bailey entered the lab where Lucy and Callie were once again. "We've done this 300 times and it's still not working", Lucy said through gritted teeth. "I went to Eugenia", Bailey stated. "She held up two postage stamps and asked me if I was looking for the 44 cent or the three". "You don't have to tell us which you picked,'' Callie replied.
"I left! Let me tell you something about my surgical field, okay? I prep my surgical field with soap and water. I keep my surgical field the way God made it. I don't need a member of the Ukrainian KGB waxing it smooth so it can be mistaken for the surgical field of a five-year-old girl. I am a woman. And a woman was meant to have something on her surgical field. If a man can't deal with a little something on the surgical field, a little nature, a little God then that man has no business getting near my surgical field"
"Alright! No one's holding a gun to your head. Let freedom ring or whatever"
"Damn it! This is not supposed to be liquid", Callie exclaimed. Lucy went to help her but Bailey put her hand over their work and they looked up to see her worried face. "What if I'm not cut out for this?" she asked. "What if I'm no longer patient enough or stupid enough to deal with this crap?" "Ok, that's it. This calls for a group hug", Callie said, dropping her supplies. "What? Callie, no. You two hug, I'll watch", Lucy said.
"No, I know you need this two"
"Do not"
"Your husband's sleeping with little Grey, you need this"
"Fine"
She dropped her supplies and they both engulfed Bailey in a hug. "You're both gonna get through your crap, I promise", Callie whispered and the two chuckled.
Arizona and Aurora were operating on Noah. "This cyst was massive", Arizona said. "We're gonna have to do a cholie 'cause of the intrabiliary pressure".
"Should I update his parents? It's gonna take a lot longer than we said"
"Yeah, sure. Good idea"
"What do I tell them?"
"Doesn't matter"
"I'm sorry?"
"Until you can say he's awake and he's fine, they won't hear a word. They'll just hear white noise and see your mouth moving. But go. It's good for them to see you. Try to keep your face happy"
She left to see the parents.
Arizona and Aurora approached Noah's parents in the waiting area. "He did great", Arizona said to the parents who let out sighs of relief. "He's just coming out from under anesthesia and he's gonna be in pain from the surgery, but he's gonna be fine". "Is this gonna happen again?" Noah's mother asked. "It's possible that he'll develop cysts in the future", Aurora explained. "So you have to keep an eye out".
"This was... I hugged him. Do I not hug him? Do we not wrestle?"
"You don't throw him on the ground", Noah's dad interjected.
"He's a boy. He likes to wrestle. It's not like I initiate it"
"Of course you hug him", Arizona reassured. "And you wrestle. You live your lives and if he happens to be in great pain then you know...". "So there isn't any kind of preventative thing...?" Noah's dad asked. "Please let her finish!" Noah's mother whined. "I was done", Arizona said softly. "Are you ready to see him?" Aurora asked. They followed Aurora to see Noah.
Lucy and Callie entered a lounge where Bailey sat. "Somebody paged us here", Callie said. Bailey dragged them in and shut the door. "Condoms", she stated. "A thin rubber sheath worn on a man's penis during sexual intercourse as a contraceptive or as a protection against infection", Lucy said in a businessy voice. Bailey groaned while Callie chuckled. "You're not funny, Shepherd", Bailey said. "They have them in the clinic", Lucy replied.
"No, no. Am I supposed to bring them?"
"Oh", Callie and Lucy said in unison. "Right. Yeah. Yeah... The guy brings the condoms", Callie explained. "Anyhow, I pegged you for the diaphragm type". "Me too", Lucy agreed. "I have a diaphragm. Diaphragms prevent pregnancy", Bailey said. "They don't protect against the raft of sexuallt transmitted diseases. You are physicians. Am I really explaining this to you two?" "We get it, we get it. Ok, look. Guy brings the condoms", Callie stated. "But sometimes they fail to provide them on the third date as a sign of respect", Lucy added.
"That's true"
"You know like, "oh, I never imagined this would happen so soon. I wasn't prepared."
"Yeah, you know what? You should bring them. Always bring them. Why trust the guy, right?"
"Right, right. All right. All right", Bailey mumbled. She looked at them desperately. "Come on", Lucy exclaimed. "I can't,'' Bailey whined.
"You can! Walk into the clinic and take some condoms out of the box"
"Don't make me ask you twice. One of you do it"
Meredith, Cristina, Jackson and Lucy watched Owen and Richard shaking hands with a family from the nurses station. "You know, Webber really came up with the idea to take out the liver", Cristina said. "Maybe if Owen, uh, agreed to take his name off of it". "Will you give it up?" Meredith said. "Hunt was more than halfway done by the time the idea even surfaced. There's no Harper Avery". "Waste", Lucy commented. "No, it's not a waste", Jackson disagreed. "It's exactly what my grandfather had in mind when he came up with the stupid thing. Find some way to keep surgeons motivated. Make them take it to the next level even if they're already at the top of their game. And that's exactly what it did today".
"This message was brought to you by the Harper Avery Foundation of America. Donations can be made at www.nepotism--"
"You're kind of a bitch. You know that?"
"What? It was inspiring!"
Kelly approached Alex. "I heard you were in the OR with Mark today. How was he? Did he seem...?" she asked.
"Look, I'm not getting in the middle of some lovers' quarrel"
"He's not my boyfriend anymore. Trust me, I dumped his ass"
"Well, I think he's into Altman now"
"Teddy? Come on. He's trying to make me think he's moving on"
"Well, it looked real. He wants to take her to lunch. He's all like, "Let's take it slow and get to know each other". I think she went for it"
He walked off as she took in a shaky breath.
She entered the residents lounge where Beck, Aurora and Kate were. She stumbled in feeling numb and disoriented. "You ok?" Kate asked softly. "Yeah", Kelly replied breathlessly. "Mark's moving on so...".
"Oh, Kelly..."
"No, it's fine. It's great. It's perfect. Perfect"
She tried to hold back her tears but couldn't. She let out a choked sob and fell to her knees shaking with sobs. Beck, Aurora and Kate knelt down in front of her. Kate pushed her hair out of her face. All three of them then wrapped their arms around the shaking girl and held her tight.
