Chapter Nine
"Doctors live in a world of constant progress and forward motion. Stand still for a second, and you'll be left behind. But as hard as we try to move forward, as tempting as it is to never look back, the past always comes back to bite us in the ass. And as history shows us again and again, those we forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Sometimes the past is something you just can't let go of. And sometimes the past is something we'll do anything to forget. And sometimes we learn something new about the past that changes everything about the past"
"break my soul in two, looking for you but you're right here. if i can't relate to you anymore, then who am i related to? and if this is the long haul, how'd we get here so soon?"
Meredith was waiting in the tunnels when Lucy came in. "Hey", Lucy greeted. Meredith punched her in the arm. "Ow! Mer, what the hell?!" Lucy exclaimed.
"You left! You didn't answer anyone's texts or calls. We were all really worried about you. Alex is really worried about you"
"I know, I'm sorry. But in one or two months, everything's gonna be back to normal. I'm getting my job back. Nothing has to change. Ok?"
"Ok"
Jackson approached Beck in the hallway. "Beck", he called. She didn't stop walking. "Dr Jacobs", he said.
"Dr Avery"
"Look, ok, about last night..."
"Last night? Did I see you last night? I didn't see you last night. I don't know what you're talking about"
"So do you have a boyfriend...?"
"It's never gonna happen"
"Got it. Thanks"
Owen introduced Cristina, Beck and Jackson to Dr Altman. "Nice to meet you. I'm Beck Jacobs", Beck introduced herself. "Teddy Altman", Teddy replied. "Teddy Altman? I've never heard of you", Cristina said.
"Cristina Yang? I've never heard of you either. So I guess that makes us even"
Beck stifled a laugh. "Teddy and I, we served in Iraq together, and she's gonna be joining us for a little while", Owen explained. "I've gotta introduce you to the chief, and you have to meet Aurora later".
Derek went into an empty radiology room where he had been paged. Lucy was standing in the room. He looked at her, shocked. He marched over to her and hugged her. "Where the hell have you been?" he asked.
"I've been staying with mom"
"She told me she hadn't heard from you"
"I made her promise not to tell anyone. I wanted to be alone"
"So, you're back now?"
"Yeah. The chief let me take a leave of absence. And now I can have my job back"
"You should talk to Alex"
"I'm going to. I will"
"I'm glad you're back"
"Thanks"
"Don't ever leave like that again, ok?"
"I'll try"
Lucy and Derek were at the nurses station in the clinic when Cristina and Meredith came in. "Where the hell have you been? You missed your IL-2 appointment?" Cristina asked. "Hi, Cristina, nice to see you, too", Lucy replied. Charles and Kate came over. "Well, well, well. Look who's back", Charles said.
"This guy? You told this asshole I was back?"
"Hi, I'm Kate. We didn't properly meet", Kate smiled, and Lucy shook her hand. "I didn't tell him. I don't even know him. It's my first day back", Meredith replied. "Dr Percy is on my service today", Derek interjected. "Dr Percy, Dr Smith, the patient needs a full dementia workup. The chart will give you the details". Derek walked away. "I wish Lucy would give me the details but I'm just the person who saved her life", Cristina said. "You know if you miss another IL-2 appointment...".
"I got my IL-2 treatment back home. I'm not a complete idiot"
"Lucy", Meredith said. Lucy turned around to see Alex standing behind them. He stared at her for a few moments. He then dropped his chart on the desk and walked off.
Owen, Teddy, Jackson, Beck and Cristina were waiting in the ambulance bay while Cristina bombarded Teddy with questions about her education. It then started to rain. "Oh, my God. It's raining!" Teddy exclaimed. "It's Seattle, it rains a lot", Beck stated. Teddy ran into the middle of the ambulance bay. "Hunt! How awesome is this?" she cheered. He smiled endearingly at her. Beck looked at him with suspicion. "She's been living in the desert for a long time", he explained.
Charles was watching Kate work on a patient in the clinic with a soft smile on his face. Lucy, standing nearby, squinted at him. "What?" he said, turning to face her.
"So, you're still desperately in love with her?"
"Yeah"
"Still no chance?"
"Yeah. Well, I mean...we did have this moment a while back"
"Oh, yeah, what happened?"
"It was this look"
"Oh my god, how long did it last?"
"I don't know exactly. I... You're making fun of me, aren't you?"
"Yes. Yes, I am"
"Well, now I'm really glad you're back"
Jackson, Beck, Cristina, Owen and Teddy were in a trauma room with their patient. "Sick sinus syndrome", Beck stated. "She needs a temporary transvenous pacemaker now", Cristina said. "Dr Yang, do you want to take this? I haven't done one of these in ten years", Teddy said.
"Excuse me?"
"I do", Jackson interjected. "And Dr Jacobs can assist me". He smirked at Beck and she glared back. "Wait, you don't remember how to or...?" Cristina asked Teddy.
"I've been working primarily on soldiers, Dr Yang, most of whom are well under the age of 70"
"Use the right IJ, Dr Avery. It'll give you the most direct approach", Owen instructed. "Dr Altman, will you excuse me just for a moment", Cristina said. "I just need to talk to the chief about something". Beck shot her a look before she left the room.
Meredith went into the radiology room where Alex was. "She has been staying with her mom", she said. "She took a leave of absence and she's coming back full-time in a month or two. She has been keeping up with her IL-2. That much I do know. That's all I know". He was silent. She eventually walked away.
Lucy approached Callie, Mark and Bailey at the nurses station. They were all shocked to see her. Callie and Mark hugged her but Bailey looked angry. "Where the hell were you, Shepherd?!" she exclaimed. "What about your IL-2". "Taken care of back home", Lucy replied.
"But I-"
"Bailey, I'm fine, okay? I'm gonna be back full time as soon as possible"
Before Bailey could reply Adele called her name and approached them. "Oh, Adele! I'm so sorry. I sent the chief into surgery. Do you want me...?" Bailey said. "What I want is for you to tell me the truth", Adele said sternly. "Are you having an affair with my husband?"
"I am not having an affair with your husband!" Bailey exclaimed. "I saw the way you handled him just now", Adele argued.
"I did not handle him! There was no handling. We work together!"
"You spend every waking moment together. You finish each other's sentences. You read each other's minds. You're more married to that man than I am"
"Yeah, but that's just because they're husband and work-wife", Lucy interjected. "Excuse me?" Bailey said.
"The chief is your work-husband and you're his work-wife. You look out for each other. You take care of each other"
"Yeah, it's like me and Sloan,'' Callie added. "Excuse me?" Mark asked.
"Nobody's talking to you. He's my work husband, but he has a girlfriend. I have a girlfriend. Nothing's going on between us"
"I mean, there was at one point..."
"You're not helping"
"None of you are", Bailey said. "Adele, I promise you there is nothing going on". "Something is going on because he hasn't been in his bed all week", Adele said.
"What?"
"Really?" Mark questioned. Lucy smacked the back of his head and he winced. "The last time he acted like this, disappearing, sleeping at the hospital every night, he was with Ellis Grey", Adele continued. "He may not be having an affair with you... But wife-wife to work-wife, someone in this hospital is sleeping with our husband".
Meredith, Cristina, Alex, Beck and Aurora were having lunch. "So, what do you think of the new attending? She's a friend of Owen's, right?" Aurora asked Beck.
"Who, Private Benjamin over there? I think you should be worried"
"Worried about what?"
"Her...and him. He kinda looks at her with...goo-goo eyes"
"Oh, please"
"I'm just saying, keep a watch. All I'm saying"
"She doesn't know how to do surgery on top of that", Cristina interjected. "Leave her alone, it's her first day", Alex defended.
"Why are you defending her? She went to a state school"
"So did I", Beck and Alex said in unison.
"Well, she's skinny and blonde"
"So's Mer, Aurora and Beck", Alex replied.
"She's annoying"
"So are you"
"Where is your wife, by the way?"
"And we're just gonna change the subject now", Aurora interrupted.
"Have you even talked to Lucy yet? Has anyone talked to her?"
"You know what? No one's allowed to talk about Lucy while I eat", Alex said.
"Am I the only one who's concerned here?"
Alex got up and left with his tray. They all looked at Cristina. "What?" she asked. "It's my first day back", Meredith said. "I just wanted to have a nice, normal lunch together".
"Oh, yeah. Take a look around. Nothing's normal"
Arizona and Teddy came into the ER where Jackson, Beck and Cristina were working on a patient. "You guys paged me? What's going on?" Arizona asked. "This is Casey, age eight, asthmatic", Beck explained. "Nebs at home haven't been working". "We added steroids, but he's having trouble breathing", Jackson continued. "Casey, I'm Dr Robbins", Arizona greeted. "I'm gonna take a look at your X-rays". Teddy listened to his chest. "Book an OR", Teddy said to Cristina.
"What? Why?"
"Because I said so"
"But he has asthma"
"Cardiac asthma, Dr Yang"
"And you know that because..."
"Because that seizure that he had, it wasn't from a fever. He had a heart attack then, and he's having one now. So you're gonna book an OR, because I'm your attending, and when I tell you to book an OR, book an OR!"
Jackson and Beck shared a look. Teddy walked away. "I like her", Arizona smiled.
Teddy, Jackson, Beck and Cristina were operating on Casey. "See the anatomy here?" Cristina said. "The coronary artery is attached to the pulmonary artery, not the aorta. It presented as asthma, but it's ALCAPA". "How did you know?" Beth asked Teddy. "You only listened to him and asked his mom a couple of questions".
"I saw some cardiomegaly on his X-rays, and heard a holosystolic murmur through his wheezing. You'll know for next time. And after today, Dr Yang, you'll know how to fix it. Maybe we'll both learn something today"
Meredith approached Alex. "Derek's operating now", she said. "I snuck Lucy into the gallery so she can watch. So if you want to go talk to her... Ok?"
"Just explain her to me, ok? Because I don't get it. I don't get her"
"Look, she's complicated, ok? She's been through a lot. But you're the one who married her, so you're the one who has to figure it out"
Alex sat down in the gallery behind Lucy. "Are you back?" he asked her.
"Full-time, in a month or so. Do you want me to be back?"
"I don't know, I'm having trouble figuring you out right now. I thought I knew you, but this isn't you"
"What are you talking about?"
"This, Lucy, come on! Leaving me without even talking to me first. A damn note, really?!"
"I didn't leave you! I left this place. I needed a break"
"And I didn't need a break?! This place is a hell hole. Horrible things happen here. But we're married, Lucy! We're supposed to go through these things together"
"But I'm here now"
"That's not good enough"
He stormed out and she sighed.
Aurora skipped over to Owen who was sitting on a bench outside the hospital. "Hey!" she greeted enthusiastically before kissing him. They started walking together. "So, Teddy seems nice", she said casually.
"Yeah. You're gonna love her"
"Yeah, I'm sure I will"
She looked unsure.
Beck was drinking at the bar when Jackson sat next to her and ordered a drink. "Hey", he said.
"It's never gonna happen"
"I didn't say anything. I'm just getting a drink"
"Fine"
"Great"
He smiled at her and she fought a smile.
