Chapter Eleven

"We assume the really serious changes in our life happen slowly, over time. But it's not true. The big stuff happens in an instant. Becoming an adult. Becoming a parent. Becoming a doctor. One minute, you're not, and the next... you are. Ask any doctor, and they can point to the one moment they become a physician. It usually isn't med school graduation day. Whatever it is... nobody forgets it. Sometimes you don't even know anything's changed. You think you're still you and your life is still your life...but you wake up one day and you look around and you don't recognise anything. Not anything at all. You never forget the moment that you become a doctor. A switch flips. Suddenly, you're not playing dress-up anymore. You own the white coat. What you may not notice is the moment that being a doctor... changes you"

"if you hear me, baby, blink! do even have the capability left to think?"

Mark watched Kelly as she woke up. She laughed breathily as she looked at him. "I need something from you", he said. She kissed him. "That, too", he chuckled. "I need you to give Sloan an ultrasound today. It's been almost three weeks".

"Can't someone from OB do it?" She kissed him and climbed on top of him.

"Yeah, but... She likes you. All Sloans do"

She laughed and they started kissing again. Sloan opened the door. "Hey, do we have any more...? Oh, ew!" she exclaimed, and left the room. Mark shoved Kelly off of him. They both got out of bed and went into the kitchen. "Sorry, Sloan", Mark apologised. "Whatever, there's no more cereal", she replied. "Why are you sorry? She's the one who didn't knock before she came in", Kelly stated. "I'll get some cereal this afternoon", Mark said, ignoring Kelly. "How about some juice? You know, Kelly's gonna give you an ultrasound today". He gave her too much money for breakfast and lunch. "I'm gonna go shower", Kelly said. "Hold on a second, I'm probably gonna have to hurl this", Sloan said. Kelly sighed.

Kelly entered Beck, Cristina and Callie's apartment where Beck was eating cereal. "Hey", Beck said, not looking up from the magazine she was reading. "Sloan Sloan monopolizing your bathroom again?" "Yeah. Yours?" Kelly asked.

"Met a guy last night, he's in there. Sorry"

"Cristina's?"

"She's in there"

Kelly sighed and went to Callie's bathroom. She gasped as she saw Callie and Arizona kissing in the shower. She abruptly left. "They're in there", Kelly said to Beck. "You should probably knock first", Beck suggested. A man came out of her room. "Bye", he said and left. "See ya", Beck said, not looking up from her magazine. "I'm late. My hair is dirty", Kelly complained. "And he just gave her 80 bucks for a muffin and a sandwich".

"That's quite a sandwich"

"She's just gonna end up spending it on a pair of jeans that show off her butt crack, and then ask me for half my pasta salad"

"You sound like a mom"

"Shut up"

"No"

Callie and Arizona came into the kitchen. "Knock much?" Callie asked. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry", Kelly said, making her way to the bathroom.

"Oh, there's no more hot water"

Kelly whimpered and went into the bathroom. Beck scoffed.

Kelly was giving Sloan an ultrasound. "Hey, do you have any cash? I lost the headset to my phone", Sloan asked.

"How about you just hold the phone to your ear?"

"You were the one who was bitching at me last night for being on the phone so late. Maybe if I had a headset, I wouldn't have to talk so loud"

"Maybe if you had your own apartment, you could talk whenever you wanted, but it looks like we're all making compromises, doesn't it? Okay, here's the head"

"It looks like an alien"

"It's gonna be a very cute alien"

"Boy alien or girl?"

Kelly was silent as she looked at the machine.

"Dude, does it have a thing or not?"

"I'm not looking at the sex, I'm... I don't... I'm new at this. I'm not very good. So why don't we go upstairs. There's a better machine upstairs. Maybe we'll have someone else take a look"

Mark came over to Kelly outside the OB exam room. "Did you tell Sloan to move out?" he asked.

"I might have mentioned it. It's not that bad of an idea"

"You're making her feel like crap"

"What?"

"She said you wouldn't even be alone in a room with her"

"She told on me? Really?"

"Why do I have to chaperone the ultrasound?"

"There's something wrong with the baby"

His face fell.

They were in the OB exam room with Dr Chen. "See right there on the left thigh?" Dr Chen said. "And on his other ankle, too". "Wait, it's a boy?" Sloan asked. "I hadn't gotten that far", Kelly said. "Oh. Sorry. Congratulations", Dr Chen said. "There's a lot of swelling on the right foot. It's very constricted". "What the hell are you talking about?" Sloan asked. "The baby's got strands of amniotic tissue wrapped around his legs", Mark explained. "They're called amniotic bands". "There's a danger of them compromising one of his limbs", Dr Chen continued. "So, what, one of his legs is gonna, like, fall off?" Sloan said.

"Well, that's the worst-case scenario"

"He's gonna have stumps?"

"We don't know what we're dealing with yet, and whatever it is, we're gonna take care of it"

"I can't have a stumpy baby. Can't you fix it?"

"I don't know,'' Dr Chen said. "I have an idea", Mark said. "How about we don't answer any patient questions with the phrase, "um, I don't know". We're gonna fix it. Let's get a fetal MRI".

"Yeah, I'm not sure..."

"I wasn't talking to you. You're done. I'll be right back"

Kate was charting at the nurses station when a nurse approached her. "Hi", he greeted, making her look up. "I'm Ethan".

"Hi, Ethan. Did you need something?"

"No"

"Ok"

She went back to charting.

"Actually, there is"

"What?"

"You're really pretty"

"Thank you"

"And if you're not busy later, maybe we could grab a drink"

"Uh, yeah, sure, okay"

"Cool, I'll see you later"

"Okay"

She smiled to herself and went back to charting. Charles came over, having watched the interaction. "Who was that?" he asked, trying to sound casual.

"A nurse, Ethan"

"Ethan, cool. What'd he want??"

"We're going out for drinks tonight"

"Oh"

"What does that mean?"

"Nothing. Just, oh"

"Ok"

Addison and Aurora were operating on Sloan while Mark watched from behind Addison. "Okay. Got the first band", Addison said. "Let's move down so I can take a look at the second". "Like that?" Aurora asked.

"Good. Why...can't I grab his leg?"

"Problem?" Mark asked.

"No, it's just that one of the bands is holding the leg in place. It's a little difficult to get around. Can you move the ultrasound up here? Oh, come on"

"What's the matter?"

"Her uterine arteries are engorged. But the only way in is in between them. Okay, I'm gonna need another trocar. Hold this?"

"You sure you have enough room? Those arteries are huge"

"That's why I'm gonna be very, very careful. Scalpel"

"What happens if you nick them?"

"Aurora?"

"She could bleed out. They both could", Aurora sighed. "I don't like it. It's too dangerous", Mark argued. "Mark, I've assessed the risk factors", Addison said. "I'm 95 percent confident I can get around the arteries. I'm choosing to continue my surgery".

"I don't like that other five percent. You hit any one of those, she bleeds out right on this table"

"Look, you're nervous, I get it"

"I'm a surgeon, and I'm looking at a time bomb in a uterus. Shut it down! Now, Addison!"

"Mark!" Aurora reprimanded. "No, Aurora, it's fine", Addison replied calmly. "Let's close her up".

Mark and Kelly were in Sloan's room. Mark was explaining what happened in surgery while Kelly charted. "If Dr Montgomey had hit it during the procedure... It's dangerous", Mark said. "What about that band that's squeezing his thigh?" Sloan asked. "He's not even gonna have a knee?"

"Sloan, you could have died"

"I can't have a gimpy kid"

"I know I haven't been your father for long, but if you say "gimp" one more time, I'm gonna smack you"

"You don't get it. He needs legs! Okay? He doesn't have a dad! He's got a stupid, slutty mom! Don't you see? I've already hurt him enough by giving him me as a mother. He needs feet!"

"Sloan..."

"Look, I don't know how to take care of any baby. Okay? I can't have one that's hurt. I can't handle it. My mom doesn't even talk to me. I'm doing this alone. Please"

"Listen. You're not stupid. And you're not slutty. The Sloans...are...passionate people. You dragged yourself across the country so you could get help taking care of this baby. That's not being stupid. That's being a mom. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you. Or the baby"

"Go to LA", Kelly interjected. "Addison said 95 percent. That's not that bad. Let her do the surgery".

"Looks like we're going to LA. You're not gonna do this alone. Why don't you stay? After the baby's born. Live with me and Kelly. Raise the baby with us. I don't know anything about being a dad, you don't know about being a mom. Maybe we could...figure it all out together"

"Really?" Sloan asked.

"Yeah"

"Okay!"

A shocked Kelly stood behind them.

Later that night, Kelly and Mark were talking in the kitchen. "I should have asked you first", he said.

"You think?"

"I was just so excited, and I was so sure it was the right thing. And you know why? 'Cause of you"

"Do not make this about me"

"Just listen. Since you, I know, for the first time in my life, what the right thing is"

"And I'm happy for you. I really am. And I am proud of you. You became a dad today and Sloan, who knew, she became a mom. But I didn't. I was barely ready to move in with you, never mind your daughter and a grandbaby. I don't want this"

"You told me you wanted kids"

"Yeah, I do, but I want my own kids and not now. I'm not ready for this"

"But this is what you do for family, right?"

"I understand why you're doing it. I just don't understand why I'm doing it"

"I thought you'd be a little bit more supportive"

"I have been so supportive! Don't make me out to be the selfish one. You don't get to decide to let a teenager and her infant move into our house"

"We'll get a bigger place. She needs us"

"Mark, you're not even listening to me. It's not about how big our house is"

"Kelly, I thought I missed this. This is a chance for me. Don't make me choose between you and her"

"Why? 'Cause you'll choose her"

"Yeah. I choose her"

"That's not what you were supposed to say. Damn it, Mark"

She grabbed her coat and left.

Owen approached Aurora at the nurses station. "Hey", she smiled and pecked his lips before noticing his fallen face. "What's the matter?"

"She's leaving Seattle"

"It's me, isn't it? I haven't tried hard enough to connect with her"

"Aurora, no-"

"It's okay, I'll go talk to her"

She walked off before he could stop her.

Beck was watching TV when there was a knock at the door. She got up and opened the door revealing a sad looking Kelly. "Hey, what's wrong?" Beck asked.

"Mark and I just broke up"

"Kelly, I'm so sorry"

Kelly started to cry and Beck pulled her in for a hug.

Beck and Kelly were drinking beer on the couch. "I'm too young to be a grandmother", Kelly said. "I'm supposed to be working really hard, and acting stupid, but here I am, crying and drinking beer after breaking with my boyfriend. Oh, yeah and he's about to become a grandfather".

"This is your chance. Go out, be stupid, work crazy hard"

"I'm in love with him. I just want him back"

Aurora ran after Teddy through the front entrance of the hospital. "Teddy, wait!" she yelled. "What's going on? Why are you leaving? Is it me? Just tell me it's me, and we can work on this".

"It isn't about that"

"Wait, then what? Just tell me what it is"

"Aurora, it's complicated"

"Just tell me what you want!"

"I want Owen!"

Aurora's face fell. "What?"
