"How are my favourite sailors?" (y/n) smirks as she walked into the ice cream store while Steve failed to get a girl's number. Again.
"Another one bites the dust!" (y/n) and Robin sings out together and Steve groans out.
"You are oh-for-six, Popeye." Robin snickers, marking a line in the 'You Suck' column of the board that she and (y/n) has been keeping track of.
"That must hurt Steve." (y/n) chuckles as she leans against the register table, him smiling at her.
"Haha very funny. Now come here." he pulls her behind the register to hug her, doing their handshake that they made when (y/n) and Steve first found out they were working in the same mall together.
When (y/n) and Steve first got their jobs and bumped into each other at the mall, they decided to hang out every time they had their lunch break or (y/n) would come down to the ice cream store to bug Steve whenever she had time and felt like it. The two were surprised at first to be working so close to each other, (y/n) working on the floor above Steve but it was the perfect way for the two to make up after being distant from each other. They caught up and talked about life during their breaks, sometimes (y/n) giving Steve some advice on how to get girls.
Billy wasn't all that thrilled when he found out (y/n) and Steve worked so close together, finding her at his store in her business attire while he tried to find her during her lunch break. But he let it be knowing that (y/n) didn't have feelings for Steve and he made sure to rub it in his face whenever he pulled her close and kissed her cheek.
"Hey Robin!" (y/n) calls out to the girl and she smiles.
"Hey (y/n), what brings you here?"
"Just thought I would visit you both."
Steve introduced Robin to (y/n) and it took some time for the girls to become friends seeing as (y/n) was very shy. But they soon hit it off when they realised they went to the same high school, (y/n) telling Robin all the embarrassing stories about Steve when he begged her not to.
"Want a scoop?" Robin nods to the ice cream and (y/n) nods, picking out a flavour. She went to pay but both sailors stopped her.
"On the house for you."
"Come on, you know I'm keeping track every time you say that. I owe like $20!"
"Nah, it's free for our favourite person." Steve chuckles, ruffling (y/n)'s hair and she swats her hand away.
"Don't run to me when you magically see a $20 bill in the cashier."
"You wouldn't!" Robin fake gasps but laughs. "So what's up?"
"Well... Billy may or may not have asked me out for our first date..."
"Shut up!" Robin gasps for real, dropping the board and running over to (y/n). "Fucking finally! I almost lost my bet with Popeye here!"
"You bet on us!?" (y/n) looks at Steve who groans, handing money to Robin.
"He thought Hargrove was never gonna ask you out officially."
"I mean same considering our situation. But I don't mind." (y/n) shrugs.
"So what are you two doing?" Steve asks, listening in as well.
"Didn't say. Said he'll pick me up from my place later tonight."
"Don't you like, live literally across from each other? What's the point?" Steve asks in confusion.
"It's romantic, picking up a girl from their place." Robin wacks Steve and he rubs his arm. "What are you wearing?"
"I was thinking my prom dress... I haven't had the chance to wear it again and I really liked it."
"You looked amazing in it." Steve smiles, faltering slightly as he remembered (y/n) that night and he shakes his head.
He had to let her go.
"Well, what are you doing here!? Go get ready for your date!" Robin starts jokingly moving (y/n) out of the store.
"Ok, ok! I'm going!" there was a group of girls coming towards the store and (y/n) quickly turns around. "Good luck Steve!" She salutes him, nodding to the girls and he rolls his eyes with a smile. (y/n) walks off with her ice cream, deciding to buy something for Billy for tonight. Unconventional but she wanted to get him something. She walked in and out of stores, buying something from a tech store and something from a florist before heading home to get ready.
~~~~~~~~
"Why am I so nervous!?" (y/n) stands in front of the mirror, smoothing out her dress. It was that floral blue dress from before, looking over at her gloves wondering if she should wear them again. She looked down at her arms, the scores almost completely faded away as she gently ran a finger across her skin.
Maybe not tonight...
She quickly checked the time and jumped to put her flats on, grabbing the woven hat basket of flowers she bought before grabbing her purse and checking all her windows were locked. There was knocking on the front door and (y/n) quickly checked her appearance one last time, not bothering to tie up her hair and leaving it out before going to her door. She took in deep breaths to calm her heart, patting her chest lightly before opening the door.
Billy stood anxiously in front of (y/n)'s door, waiting silently as he fiddled with the cuffs of his blue button shirt. He shook off the nerves, doubling checking that the little box was in his pocket. He was Billy Fucking Hargrove for fucks sake. He doesn't get nervous taking girls on dates. He's cool and mysterious. He's every girl's sexual fantasy, he's-
-Fuck...
He's fallen head over heels for the girl that stood in front of him as the door opens. (y/n) was wearing that blue dress he loved, seeing her smile at him shyly and he melts.
"Hi Billy." She whispers.
"You look beautiful (y/n)." Billy smiles, taking in the flush of her cheeks.
"Thank you. You look handsome, as always." (y/n) grins, taking in Billy wearing a button shirt and slacks. This was her first time seeing him wear something other than denim and it was a cute domestic look. "I got you something." Billy blinks in surprise as she hands him a woven hat basket filled with red and blue lilies, a blue ribbon tied around the hat and his mind flashes to the same hat his mother wore.
"This..."
"I remember you saying how blue was your favourite colour and red lilies were your mother's favourite flower..." (y/n) rubs her neck nervously and Billy smiles at the memory of his mother, knowing that she would've loved (y/n).
"I love it. Thank you." he leans up to kiss her cheek before taking her hand and leading her to his car. He carefully places the flowers in the back before getting in the driver's seat and driving off to his first stop. "I have something for you too but, I'll give it to you only after tonight."
"Now I'm really curious. You got me something and I'm in the dark about the date. So what's first?"
"Are you hungry?"
"Big time."
~~~~~~~~
"Holy shit... isn't this restaurant like VIP VIP!?" (y/n) whispers, looking at Billy who grins at her being in awe of the restaurant. He signals the waiter for a table and she guides them to the back booths near a glass wall that overlooked Hawkins. Billy moves to take (y/n)'s chair out and she raises a brow at him, sitting down so he could push her chair forward. She laughs lowly at him being gentlemen like. "It's true what they say, chivalry ain't dead."
"Here are the menus, is there anything I can get you sir?" the waiter flushes as Billy winks at her, ordering a specific bottle of wine.
"Thanks, doll." the waiter sighs as she walks off and (y/n) snickers from watching the entire interaction, Billy looking at her. "What?"
"Nothing, just amusing to see you work your charm on others." she muses as she lays her head on her hands that were entwined together.
"It does come with its perks." Billy smirks, leaning closer to her to tuck a stray lock behind her hair.
"Goddamnit." (y/n) stutters as her cheeks flush and Billy laughs lowly. The two skim over the menu to order, the waiter noting it down while she poured a glass of red wine for the couple who talked.
"I realised I don't know much about you (y/f/n)." Billy muses as he takes a sip of his wine.
"I like staying a mystery." She shrugs. "But if you have any questions, shoot."
"Do you have any siblings?"
"I do actually. I have a younger brother. He's a year younger than me though."
"So he would be 17?"
"Yep. Granted we're more closer and civil than you and your sister." (y/n) mocks lightly and Billy rolls his eyes with a smile.
"Hey, I might hate the shitbird but we have our moments."
"I know you mean well with the kid. I mean you're very encouraging with the kids you teach at the pool. They love you and it's cute how you play with them."
"You think I'm cute huh?"
"Of course I do. I would be mad if I didn't think so."
"Hmm, so why did you move from your family? Move here to Hawkins?"
"I felt trapped back home. I had to leave. I couldn't take it anymore with all the expectations and the burdens and the feelings of never being good enough. It was suffocating so I took all the money I had and just left." Billy frowns as (y/n) sighs out heavily.
"Do they know you're here?" she shakes her head no.
"I haven't contacted them since. I miss my mum and brother sure but I can't bring myself to do it."
"Your dad-"
"-fuck that asshole. He can go die in a ditch for all I care." (y/n) hisses lowly and Billy looks at her in shock.
"I guess we both have father figure issues."
"I guess we do..."
