(y/n) - your name

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Nancy! (y/n) hurry up! I want to take pictures!" Karen calls out and the girls look at each other, chuckling before smoothing out their dresses. It was the Snow Ball tonight at Hawkins High School, every single student getting all dressed up and snazzed for the prom night.

"Don't worry (y/n), you look lovely. I'm glad you got the dress from the mall. I knew it looks amazing on you." Nancy smiles at (y/n) who nervously fiddled with her gloves.

"Really?" Nancy nods, beaming as she held (y/n) shoulders.

"I'll see you downstairs ok." (y/n) nods and Nancy walks downstairs, leaving the girl to try and calm her nerves. She pulled down the sleeve of her gloves, sighing in frustration as the makeup covering the dark lines was rubbing off.

It's been a whole month since the fiasco with the demons and such, trying to fit back into normal life after almost facing death. Steve, Billy, Jonathan and (y/n) graduated this year, teasing Nancy that she was a year behind them. Billy was still cold towards the group, especially Steve but he was warming up to them. Not directly talking to them but at least acknowledging them and not bullying their siblings anymore.

After coming back home from the hole in the pumpkin farm, it was almost like a switch that had clicked between (y/n) and Billy. Things got awkward between them sometimes, Billy pulling away from spending time with (y/n) and just not seeing her anymore. She was hut but figured that now they were graduating... she should've expected not to be close to her friends anymore. She had always known that they would all leave her behind and go off to do their own thing in life.

She was dreading graduation, not going to the ceremony but picking up her awards from Nancy who asked her why she didn't go and if she was ok. No, she wasn't. She didn't want to move on, leave behind the people she cared about. Prom night was the first night (y/n) sobered up after weeks of drinking and pain, deciding to actually spend time with her friends one last time.

She hadn't seen Billy in a while. "Maybe he'll come tonight..." (y/n) shook her head, throwing away the thought. Billy didn't like social events like this, that's what she thought. She decided to not have any hope and walk downstairs with a practised smile.

"Oh my god!" Karen gasps, complimenting Nancy for doing an amazing job on (y/n) as she walked down the stairs. Mike gaped as (y/n) stood next to him, giving him a small smile. "(y/n) you look beautiful! Both my girls are gorgeous tonight!" (y/n) flushes, careful to not wipe the makeup on her face. It was simple but flattering, her hair half pinned and curled with her curtain bangs framing her face. "And you're not wearing your glasses!"

"Contacts..." (y/n) chuckles and Karen urges her kids and (y/n) to stand together to take a picture before giving each kid a solo photo shoot.

"Mum! Jonathan is outside!" Nancy sighs out as her mum asks her to pose one more time and (y/n) chuckles, creeping towards the door. "Don't you dare leave without me!" Nancy gasps, chasing after (y/n) as she runs outside to get the front seat in Jonathan's car.

"Woah easy girls." he chuckles, smiling at (y/n)." You look wonderful (y/n)."

"Thank you." Jonathan compliments Nancy as she smiles brightly, Mike also getting a compliment on how handsome he looked and he just groans in embarrassment. "Ok, let's get this show on the road!"

~~~~~~~~
"I know it's unconventional for graduates to go to prom night but I'm lowkey excited for this." (y/n) grins as she looks out at the window, seeing lights and music filter out from the gym.
"It is your first prom after all. So let's make it special!" Nancy says as she gets out of the car with Mike, (y/n) also jumping out before Jonathan went to park. Another car drives up to the front door and (y/n) sees that it was Steve and Dustin. Dustin gets out after what looks like was a pep talk of a lifetime, (y/n) walking over and leaning down to Steve's window.
"Hey, Steve."
"Hey (y/n)..." Steve smiles warmly at her, admiring how lovely she looked tonight. The two were a bit rocky after she rejected his confession but he was glad to still be friends with her. "You look beautiful." (y/n) blushes and thanks Steve.
"You're not joining tonight?" Stebe shook his head.
"Not my style." that was a complete lie. Steve couldn't handle seeing (y/n) dance with someone else tonight that wasn't him, he didn't want to be heartbroken again. Plus... someone else was going to be here for her.
"Awe come on. The three musketeers aren't the three without you." Steve chuckles at the group nickname.
"Yeah, there's more than three of us now."
"Yeah yeah."
"(y/n)!" she looks over to see Nancy calling for her by the door. "Come on!"
"Look's like someone is wanted Miss Popular."
"That's bullshit and you know it." (y/n) grins. "Anyway, I guess I should go."
"Yeah, me too." Steve hesitates before he leans up and kisses (y/n) on the cheek, catching her by surprise. "Have fun tonight." (y/n) steps back as Steve smiles at her warmly, her touching her cheek.
"Hey Steve..." he looks at her before driving away. "I'm sorry..."
"It's ok." he nods and he looks back as he reverses back out onto the road and drives off, leaving (y/n) frowning. She sighs out before walking towards the door and heading into the gym.
"Woah..." the whole gym was decked out in decorations, a balloon archway, confetti on the floor, stringed fairy lights, streamers and banners plus a disco ball that strobed multicoloured lights. It was dorky but kind of cute. (y/n) walked over to help Nancy serve the punches, humming and tapping her foot to the beat of the music as the kids all danced on the dancefloor. She saw the kids over at a table and she walked off to go say hi. "So this is where the cool kids are." the boys all gape at (y/n) as she smiled at them, Max elbowing Lucas in the chest.
"You look amazing (y/n)." Max says.
"And you look beautiful Max." (y/n) hugs her before looking at the boys. "Handsome as always you guys." She makes an ok sign and the boys grin at her. A slow song suddenly starts playing and (y/n) subtly shoves Max into Lucas before walking away. She goes back to the punch table, unknowing of a certain someone watching her by the gym doorway.
Billy leans his head back against the wall, watching (y/n) smile at the kids and pass them their drinks. He ignored the whispers of the little girls around him, smiling at how beautiful (y/n) looked tonight. He felt warm seeing her smile. He wanted to go to her but he didn't know if he should.
The reason he stopped seeing the past month was the confusing feelings he had for her. Feelings he never had before... for anyone... and it scared him. He didn't know what to do and thought it would be best to stay away for a bit... see other girls but all he thought about was (y/n).
Billy quickly ducks out of the gym when (y/n) was heading his way, deciding that she needed to go outside for some air. She walked outside and took in a deep breath, moving to lean against Jonathan's car as she just looked up at the sky.
(y/n) sighs out, feeling the dark feelings come for her again. "I need to move..."
"A lot of people are gonna miss you if you move..." (y/n snaps her head to the side to see Billy next to her, drinking from a very familiar bottle. "Vodka?"
"God yes." (y/n) grabs the bottle and takes a swig. "What are you doing here? I don't think this is really your scene." Billy chuckles, careful taking the bottle away from (y/n).
"I actually came to see you." her breath hitches as he shifts closer to her. "I know... I haven't been around for a month... I had to sort some things out." (y/n) nods, not pushing Billy to explain. "I needed to see you though..." Billy sighs out and (y/n) flushes pink.
"Well, I'm here..."
"You are and you look stunning." Billy grins noticing the blush on (y/n)'s face, leaning in to brush her hair back gently. He forgot how soft she was until he was able to touch her again. And fuck, that floral scent always locked him in. "Do you wanna go somewhere?" Billy asks and (y/n) looks back at the gym before looking at Billy, nodding.
He takes her hand and they both get in his car, the music from his radio blasting as he speeds down the road. (y/n) whoops out in the air, feeling so free and her mind finally empty of the dreading thoughts in her head. Billy rolls down the window and (y/n) sings loudly to the song that was on the radio, Billy just watching with amusement and remembering the first time she did this in his car.
"Beautiful mistakes I make inside my head. She's naked in my bed and now we lie awake, making beautiful mistakes."
(y/n) dances in her seat, smiling at Billy as she sang, putting the volume up and he lets her, speeding down the road of an empty highway with fields of flowers passing by them.
"I wouldn't take 'em back. I'm in love with the past and now we lie awake, making beautiful mistakes."
Billy drums his fingers to the beat against the steering wheel, letting (y/n) sing until the song ends and he parks the car to the side. "Where are we?" She peeks her head out, seeing a field of pink and purple lilies. "Woah..." (y/n) gets out of the car, in awe of the view before her.
"I feel a little nauseous and my hands are shaking, I guess that means you're close by. My throat is getting dry and my heart is racing, I haven't been by your side."
A new song starts playing and Billy gets out of his car, leaning against the hood of his car where (y/n) was sitting on top. She laid back to look up at the sky, humming softly to the song. She looks over at Billy who was also looking up, arms crossed as if thinking.
"What's up? You look like you're contemplating life." She chuckles, sitting up as Billy smiles. He walks over to (y/n), standing in front of her as she looks up at him.
"I'm sorry."
"What for?"
"For so many things... For hurting you, for avoiding you..."
"There's nothing you need to be sorry for Billy. I have always forgiven you."
"Why... why do you care so much? You always look out for me. Why?" (y/n) reaches up and holds Billy's cheeks and he leans into her palm.
"I care about you. A lot, I get worried for you and I need to know you're ok..." Billy looks down at (y/n), taking in the truth of her words as he leans his forehead on hers. "There's something wrong isn't there? Is it Neil, did he hurt you again? Did he-"
"-I have feelings for you (y/n)." Billy breathes out and (y/n) freezes from his confession, him stepping back to take in her expression which turns sad.
"Billy I can't-"
"-I know but I had to let you know. It's been fucking with me the past month and I had to let you know how I felt about you. I have never had feelings for anyone like this before and it was screwing me over. I didn't know what to do and I thought staying away from you would help but I missed you..."
"Billy-"
"-don't say anything yet, please..." (y/n) frowns and shakes her head, jumping down from the car and walking into the field to get some space. Her heart was racing and she felt like she wanted to cry. It hurt, it physically hurt and she didn't know what to do. It didn't hurt like this when Steve confessed to her, so why Billy.
"Billy I don't know if I can-"
"-What is Harrington to you?" (y/n) sighs out as Billy stands next to her.
"He's a friend. He's someone I can look up to like family, same with Jonathan."
"And what about me?" Billy turns (y/n) to face him, holding her hands.
"I-" he steps closer to her and her breath hitches. "I don't know... We don't act like friends. We-" (y/n) holds her breath as Billy pulls her to his chest, holding her hips. "We do more than how friends interact..." she sighs out as he nuzzles his nose against her neck, feeling her erratic heartbeat. "I touch you differently from my friends..." (y/n) runs her hands up Billy's chest as he wraps his arms around her waist. "Billy... I don't want to hurt you..." she whispers against his lips.
"I'm willing to take that chance." Billy moves one of his hands up to hold (y/n)'s cheek, wiping away the tears that fall. "We can take it one day at a time. We don't have to put a label on us. No pressure. I just want you to know I'm yours and maybe hopefully, I can say you're mine..."
"Ok..." (y/n) breathes out, nodding as she smiled up at Billy. He held her cheek as he kissed her forehead before leaning down to kiss her lips.
"I think of the night in the park, it was getting dark and we stayed up for hours. What a time, what a time, what a time."
There was the same hit of sweetness that Billy missed, pulling (y/n) closer as she kissed him back just as sweetly. They both had missed the way the other felt in their arms, the taste of their lips and the heat that spread through them. Billy ran his fingers through (y/n)'s hair to tilt her head, kissing her deeper as she leaned up on her toes to pull him closer. She pulls back, panting against his lips and she hides her face in Billy's shoulder, him chuckling at how shy (y/n) was all of a sudden.
"You clinged to my body like you wanted it forever. What a time, what a time, what a time for you and I."
He leads her in a slow dance with the music from his car drifting over the two of them, simply holding each other beneath the moon and stars and amongst a field of flowers.
