~Jude~
"So, you know how you're supposed to slur when you're drunk," my friend Payton mumbled to me as we laid back on my bed, staring up at the ceiling after a long day at school. I studied the swirling patterns of the white roof and gave a quick 'uh huh' absentmindedly.
"What if that's like, talking in cursive or something," He said and I paused my breathing for a moment, glancing at him from the corner of my eye before sighing. It's best not to comment on these types of things when it comes to Payton. He's a, well, special thinker.
"No really, think about it!"
I am thinking about it but I'm also thinking that you're just the smallest bit insane.
Of course I didn't tell him my thoughts, instead settling with a tightlipped smile and nodding.
"See that's what I love about a mute friend, they never tell you when they think you're an idiot," Payton chuckled to himself, sweeping his long, ginger hair to the side and I smiled, shaking my head.
"I'm not that mute," I whispered, my voice raspy from lack of usage, and he shrugged, slightly curving the left side of his mouth upwards.
"Eh, you might as well be Judey-boy. You're pretty damn quiet," He responded, crossing his arms behind his head, and I squinted my eyes before sighing. He was right, what's the point in arguing?
"But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean, look at me. I'm a loudmouthed, self-proclaimed badass and I'm always getting into trouble with the 'rents. You, on the other hand, haven't even seen the slightest moment of a time-out," He added and I smirked at him, causing him to glare playfully.
"Well, evidence shows that you are prone to being a more rambunctious individual opposed to myself, who is of a more, structured personality," I said and he stared at me for quite some time before sighing and rubbing his face in agitation.
"See that's your problem, most of the time you don't talk but when you do, I can't understand you," He said, chuckling with his hand on his forehead and I laughed quietly. The orphanage certainly wasn't the best place to spend my time growing up, but the immense amount of free time was more than adequate for reading. So, once I paved my way through the orphanage's small amount of books, most being aimed at the younger children, I moved on to the largest book we had; the dictionary. I was just about to explore the thesaurus when Mr. Anderson and Mr. Thompson adopted me.
"Yes well, years in an orphanage will do strange things to you," I told him and he shrugged nonchalantly. Payton had been one of the lucky ones, escaping the system almost instantly. After only being trapped for five months, he was adopted by Dakota and his boyfriend.
"Yeah, that makes sense. Um, if you ever wanna talk about it-"
"No thank you."
"Yeah, I expected that," Payton sighed dejectedly and I frowned deeply, sitting up to look him in the eyes.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. You've never told anyone about it but c'mon Jude, we've all seen the scars," Payton said angrily, his volume getting louder, while raking his hands through his hair in frustration.
"Yes well, they don't seem to be of any of your concern," I said, my voice rising as well, much to my throat's disdain as the strain hurt my vocal cords. Payton turned towards me, anger and hurt shining brightly in his deep cerulean eyes, before he let out a mocking laugh.
"Yeah, you're right. It's absolutely of no concern to me that my best-fucking-friend is sitting around with a hoodie on all the time because his arms are so marked up with damn cigarette burns that he's too embarrassed to be seen without it. Too embarrassed to go swimming. Too embarrassed to change in the the locker rooms. Too embarrassed to take off his hoodie in the middle of ninety-fucking- degree heat," He shouted, abruptly standing up from the bed and glaring down at me with his fists clutched tightly at his side.
His muscles, constructed from years of pitching for baseball teams, were tensed and his 6'2" frame towered over me as his eyes gleamed down with frightening fury. I felt myself shrink under his intense gaze, shivering slightly despite knowing he would never intentionally harm me.
Seeing my reaction, Payton sighed deeply, shaking his head from side to side. He reached a hand out and I flinched backwards against my will, breaking his heart further. He licked his dry lips as he stared down at me with pained eyes and he rubbed the back of his neck.
"C'mon Jude, you know I'd never hurt you man. I'm sorry, okay? Fuck, I'm so sorry," He repeated apologetically, rubbing at his face, probably feeling even more frustrated, but I just stared at him silently, keeping my knees drawn up to my chest as far as they'd go.
'Knock, Knock'
Our eyes were drawn to the bedroom door as it creaked open and Mr. Thompson sheepishly peeked his head inside, waving just before Mr. Anderson charged into the room and crossed his arms, glaring harshly at my red-headed friend.
"Payton, we think it's time for you to go," He said, struggling to contain the rage in his voice as he jutted his thumb to point out the door and Payton nodded, walking towards the exit.
"I really am sorry Jude," he said, opening his mouth as if he had more to say before shaking his head once more and leaving the room. I stared at the location at which he had been just moments ago with regret until I heard a small cough come from my still opened door. I glanced up at Mr. Thompson as he smiled softly, concern sparkling in his eyes.
"You okay Jude? If you need to talk-"
"I'd rather be alone, thank you Mr. Thompson," I said quietly and he sighed quietly, looking up at Calixto for help.
"Okay Jude, just know that we're here for you. No matter what," He finished, ushering a protesting Mr. Thompson out of the room and shutting the door closed behind them. I stared at the now closed door and sighed, laying back on my bed.
It was obvious I was troubling everyone with my presence and my standoffish ways. Payton's just trying to be protective of me the best way he knows how but I'm not interested in being protected if it means sacrificing my privacy, and he knows that. Mr. Thompson and Mr. Anderson always seem a bit upset with me when I don't treat them like parents but they don't realize how much of a blessing that truly is. I would never want to give them that title in a million years, they didn't deserve it.
"No one does," I mumbled to myself before going to my room's bay window, the air in the room suddenly feeling hot and sticky. I opened the window and a cool breeze immediately blew inside, the fresh scent of spring flowers wafting through along with it. I inhaled deeply, relaxing in the gentle moonlight and jumped as I suddenly heard the sound of something clattering around at the bottom of the two-story house. Normally, human instincts would suggest that an animal was the culprit of the foreign nighttime sound but being in the suburbs, I didn't think it was too valid of a theory, especially considering the minute a raccoon or a possum manages to slip into "human territory" they either wound up inside a cage in the back of a van or under its tire as roadkill.
"Hello," I called timidly, my voice wavering slightly, and my eyes raked over the entire lawn fearfully. I slowly bent over, leaning my head outside the window precariously for a better look. As time passed, the only sounds to be heard were the light chirping of crickets and the sound of cars going down the road. It seemed as if whatever was out there, was long gone by no—
"Hey there cutie."
"Oh my-" I was suddenly shushed as lips connected to mine and a hand wrapped around the back of my head as some strange guy in a black hoodie hoisted himself inside, pushing me onto my bed.
"Pretty nice place," he commented, winking after looking around the room as I stared up at him in absolute shock, my mouth completely agape.
'C'mon Jude, say something! Scream! Alert help!'
My thoughts were racing as fast as my heart as I laid on my bed, frozen in fear and surprise. I blinked repeatedly to make sure what had happened, had actually happened. As soon as what happened was confirmed in my mind, I wiped at my lips furiously, trying to rid myself of the stranger's taste as he stalked around my room, picking up my things and observing them before putting them down.
'So, obviously this guy isn't a murderer, considering I'm still breathing at the moment. And he must not be a burglar, since he's not taking my things. Well, unless my stuff's not good enough to steal.'
"Get out," I whispered, catching his attention, and he smirked, walking closer to me, his black, leather boots clunking against the floor as he moved towards me with confident strides. The moonlight illuminated his body, he was built with muscle which made him even more intimidating. He was as tall as Payton, if not taller by an inch or two, and the piercing in his nose glistened and sparkled. The small, black guages hung in his ear, adding even more to his threatening disposition.
"Ha, so he does speak. I was beginning to hope you'd try and scream again just so I could "silence" you again," He said, finishing with what he probably considered to be a charming wink, and I hugged my knees to my chest. By this point, I could now make out his styled hair and his blue, maybe green, eyes as he drew nearer and nearer to myself.
"But, I must admit, that after all that waiting, alls you've got to say is "Get out." Nah, see, I'd much rather hear something else coming out of those sweet lips," He whispered, still trying to charm me into submission, and I narrowed my eyes at him, not buying his sweet talk one bit. If this was going to be my last day on this Earth, I didn't want it spent as an idiot.
"Yeah, I'd much rather be hearing you say "yes," the stranger told me, coming to a stop just inches away from me before leaning down to where our eyes were perfectly aligned. I could now see the brilliant, jade eyes he sported, as well as smell his somewhat irresistible cologne.
"To what," I questioned and he placed his forehead against mine, his breath dusting over my lips again. He smirked, getting on top of me and looking down into my eyes. My lips twitched as he drew even closer, subconsciously wanting to have their second kiss, but I withheld the temptation as he licked his own pair just before they parted as he began to speak.
"Help me."
