Chapter 2: Life's a Cruel Joke

*Jerica's POV*

I'd like to smack whoever said life was a peice of cake in the face really hard. Because what they state is complete and utter bull crap.
Today marks six months since my best friend went missing. Two months since they found any trace that she was even still alive. Some of us like Alex and Magnus-along with the rest of the town-have accepted that she's dead.
But for some reason I can't, and I won't until they show me her body.
So here I sat at the kitchen island watching the news with Janna.
Janna, I fear, will never be the same again. Ellie's disappearance messed her up good. She ghas terrible nightmares and can barely sleep, she's taking like four different medications for it.
I guess hearing your sister was gone and more-than-likely never coming back was a little too much for a six year old to bare.
As for me, I began severely depressed, but refused to see a doctor for it.
The only reason we were watching the news was so she could do some report for school.
"And done." Janna slapped her pencil down. "I've officially done all my homework for the weekend."
"Good for you." I high-fived my little sister causing us both to laugh.
"You going to hang out with Chachi today?" I asked, getting up and taking our breakfast plates to the sink.
"Yeah, I think so." She replied, pulling on a loose strand of red hair. "Hanging with the gang?"
I nodded. "Going to the lake. Thought it would be-" The news anchor cut me off, making us both turn to face him.
"In other news, today marks six months since Eleanor Reyna (Bates) Jones went missing outside Miller's hideout." The new anchor started. "Sadly still to this day we cannot guarantee that she is still alive-"
I shut off the telly, and turned to Janna who looked like she was about to cry.
"Come'er" I pulled her into a tight hug, that was cut short by the doorbell.
"I'll get it." She sniffed. "It's probably Chachi."
I followed her to the door and waited as she opened it.
Not only Chachi, but Magnus as well stood on the other side. "Ladies." Magnus greeted with a smile.
"Mag." Janna nodded. "I'm going now. Love you, Jer."
"Love you too, Jan, have fun. Bye Chachi." I blew a kiss before shutting the door.
"How are you feeling, Jerica?" Magnus asked, wrapping me in a hug.
"Better now." I admitted with a small smile.
It hurt to look at Magnus and think about him believing that Ellie was dead, but I knew it was his way of coping.

.....

*Rafe's POV*

"Rafe!"
I looked around to see where my name came from, only to see her approaching fast.
"Hey, Mack!" I called to her. "You headed to Jerica's?" I paused, waiting for her to catch up.
Mack and I had grown really close in since she disappeared due to us both losing someone who matter more than anything in the world to us.
A year ago she almost died to save Ellie's life.
Ellie. God how I miss her. Not a day goes by that I don't blame myself. Because if it wasn't for me, she wouldn't have wandered off down a path. If I hadn't gotten mad and hit her, which haunts me every minute, she would have been having fun and she'd still be here today. She'd-
"Rafe." Mack snapped her fingers in my face, bringing me back from thought.
"What?"
"I asked you if everything was alright. You've been staring into space for the past three minutes." She restated.
"Sorry, come on, we better get going."

.......

We sat in Jerica's room just like that day which seemed so long ago, except there was no Eleanor to act crazy and make us laugh.
Jerica laid on her bed, facing us, and whirling sunglasses in her hand. Mack sat next to her, looking at something on her phone.
Magnus was flipping through channels on the telly. He pasted one show and paused, smiling like an idiot. Everyone's attention drifted to the screen.
The scene on the television seemed to send a calming sense over all of us. It was one of Ellie's favorite shows that'd ended right before she disappeared.
"Do you remember when the girls died that she loved in this show?" Jerica asked, to no one in particular.
"And Ellie cried for like a week." Magnus laughed.
"She would let us call her El for two months after that." Alex chuckled.
"She always felt attached to them. Especially the redhead. So when she died it killed Ellie." Mack added. "But she died to save her the ones she loved. What was her name?"
"Max." I spoke up. "The character's name was Max."
"Ellie related to her on a high level because of them both having abusive brothers." Jerica sighed, her eyes traveling back to the TV as the redhead Max explained about her brother. "This episode is so old."
I watched the teenage girl on screen as I had many times noticing how she could have been made off of Eleanor.
The screen flashed and a siren started.
BREAKING NEWS popped up in bold red letters. A man and woman news anchor appeared seconds later.
"Police have confirmed DNA evidence found earlier in a cabin just south of Miller's Hideout. The blood found belongs to non-other-than our very own missing girl Eleanor Jones." The man stated.
"The blood had been there at least a month according to the cops. And judging by the amount of blood they can now also confirm that Eleanor Jones is indeed dead, and are searching the cabin and woods around it for anymore evidence and to hopefully recover the body."

Cliffhanger........
