Chapter 18: Goodbye

*Mack's POV*

"You know Eleanor? Our friend?" I tried again.
Everyone looked confused.
"Did you bump your head on the way here, little sis?" Phillip asked, concerned.
I grabbed at his arm. "Lip, tell me you remember Ellie."
He shook his head. "Who?"
My facial expression changed from confusion to worry.
How could they not remember her? They knew her last night.
"Are you feeling alright, babe?" Alex questioned, touching my forehead to feel for a temperature.
"Yeah, Mack, are you? Because non of us know a Eleanor." Jerica stated.
"Ye-Yeah, I'm fine." I stumbled out. "I'll meet up with you guys later. I've got to go." I got quickly and left.
Alex followed after me. "Mack!" He called.
Spinning on my heels, I turned to face him. "What? You remember her?" I asked hopefully.
He shook his head. "No." He sounded sad. "But I'm willing to believe you. If you say she's real than I believe you."
"Thanks." I smiled. "I ju-"
"Guys!" Jerica came running out of the diner. She was holding something in her hand.
Rafe and Magnus ran out seconds after her and made it to where we stood in seconds.
"Yo-you have to see this." Jerica rushed out of breath.
She held up the phone her phone to show a play button.
"We got the same message." Rafe said, Magnus nodding along with every word.
I checked my phone. One new message.
"Let's watch it together." Alex suggested.
"Good idea, but not here. The train station." Jerica suggested.

.....

We all settled against the front wall of the train station. Jack had joined us and Phillip had disappeared again.
Jerica hit the round play button, and flicked the screen up to the wall.
Ellie appeared on screen. She looked sad, but she was trying to mask it.
"Hi, you're probably confused on why a girl you've never met is sending you a video message. Well let me begin with the basics. I'm Eleanor Bates." She paused.

"The dead chick?" Rafe asked.
Jack looked as confused as I was.

"I know what you're thinking Eleanor Bates? The name that everyone in town knows. The girl who was kidnapped, tortured, and found dead in the Themes. But obviously I'm alive, right? Okay so I'm not a comedian. Maybe I'll just stick to the reason I'm filming this." She was interrupted by someone in the background
"I wish you would. We don't have all day."

I gasped, it was Phillip's voice.
"Does that voice sound familiar to you?" Jerica asked.

"Shut up, Lip, it's still recording!" Ellie covered the screen for a second. "Either be quiet or help me make this." She snapped, and uncovered the screen again. "Sorry about that. Anyway as I was about to say, the reason I'm filming this. You see I used to know you five and we were friends. Some of more and some of us family. But I had to go away, and I need you not to worry about me. I'll be fine, I'm not going alone-"

Jerica paused it. "Look behind her." She pointed to the phone to show that our names written there. "That's our names."
Ellie had been here, filming this exact video.
"And look who's standing just to the side of the camera." Magnus pointed to Phillip, who leaned against the wall.
"It's Phillip." Rafe confirmed. "Why would your brother be with her?"
"I don't know, just watch." I played the video again.

"... Just promise me-a complete stranger-that you will be happy and have a good life. You all deserve it. Don't be confused on why you don't remember me, it's not that important. Live your lives and maybe one day I'll be back. Until then I leave you with this video, and a few other things." Ellie sighed, looking at something in the corner of the screen. The time maybe. "Jerica, you don't remember, of course, but we saw each other ealier today. You see we're sisters, like that matters now though. Anyways in your left pocket is something for you. There's also a note for Magnus in your pocket. Mack, Jack, you have a longer video. Rafe, there's something for you at home on your dresser." She stopped and glanced around the room. "The lyrics to House of Memories come to mind as I look around this station. I love you all." Ellie wiped at her face, wiping away tears we couldn't see. "People can't always be perfect, because that's not real, is it?" Ellie asked. "Those are my last words for you, Magnus. Because that's how we met and became best friends." She wiped away another tear. "One last thing, don't share this with anyone else. Goodbye guys." The video ended.

Everyone glanced at each other before Magnus decided to speak. "That quote was from Skins." He said simply. "It's one of my favorite quotes from it. How'd she know?"
Jerica shrugged and dug into her pocket, producing two old pictures and a piece of paper. She handed the note to Magnus and flipped the pictures over.
The back read in cursive writing: Jerica and Ellie Age 4. The other one read Jerica and Ellie Age 6.
The first picture was of two small girls in what looked like Jerica's backyard. Ellie stood behind Jerica with her hands on her shoulder, neither were really smiling, and they had on matching clothes.

In the second photo both of their hair had turned completely red Jerica's a little more orange than Ellie's. Eleanor had her head resting on Jer's shoulder. They seemed to be looking at something we couldn't see.

Jerica smiled, a flicker of recognition flashed in her eyes. "I've never seen these photos before." She rubbed her hand over it.
Magnus gasped, the letter falling from his hands. He looked like he'd seen a ghost. "I have to go." He mumbled, snatching up the paper, and hurring out.
"What was that about?" Rafe questioned.
We all shrugged together. "You can never tell." I sighed.

Can we talk about how adorable the first picture is??
Anyway if I hear one word about this being Hannah Baker style I'm gunna flip. It's not made at all to be like Hannah's, and actually I got more of pll vibe while writing it.
What'd Magnus' letter say?
Get ready ~ Izzy
