Ruminating About a Different Aftermath

Old Mother Earth needed a rest

The human occupants had become a pest

Polluted the air with greenhouse gas

Poisoned the oceans with plastic mass

Butchered rain forests once fully treed

Gutted the ground for selfish need

She opened her book to see what might do

War and natural disasters only bothered a few

What she needed was something new

She snapped her fingers and said I'll try

Something unseen with the naked eye

Something they won't believe is there

And carry on without a care

Until they see it was left too late

To defend against their certain fate

And when she thinks they've had enough

She'll rid the planet of the stuff . . . for now

And now that they have been once burned

We'll see just what it is they've learned

Will they finally come to realize

That earth for all comes in one size

Is it back to tricks the same old way

Or will they see a new more caring day

She added to the column of things she'd tried

Closed her book, sat back and sighed

It's up to them to earn salvation

To cherish life and its creation
