Chapter 19

Trigger warning from this point & onward

Ken woke up in the hospital. She wasn't sure how'd she'd gotten there, or why. She wasn't sure if she was okay or if she wasn't. She wasn't sure if it was her fault or not.
The not knowing...there was a sense of deja vú about that.
But she couldn't remember.
She turned her head to her left to see an IV inserted into her arm. Then she fumbled with her fingers, trying to pull the oxygen mask off her face, but they scrabbled against the plastic without success. She clawed harder, her breathing accelerating, because she hated feeling like she was about to suffocate.
Her monitor stared beeping and a nurse rushed into the room, yelling out medical jargon and injecting something into Ken's arm.
Ken blinked as the world doubled before her eyes. Two doors, two nurses, two IV drips in two left arms. Then her vision faded to black.
Her bloody hands fell to the sheets.

"She's in here," the nurse said, pointing to Ken's room. "But you can't go in unless you're family."
Hide widened his eyes. "Please, ma'am. Her parents died and her aunt can't come. I'm all she's got."
After a few minutes of Hide's pouting, the nurse sighed and scanned the hallway. "Fine. But hurry. And you didn't get permission from me, got it?"
Hide nodded, grinning. "Thank you!"
The nurse opened the door, stepping into the room with Hide.
He stilled as he stood next to the bed, staring down at her. "Did she..." He swallowed, trying to stay composed. "Did she do this to herself?"
"The scratches on her face, yes," the nurse said, clucking her tongue. "She was trying to pull the oxygen mask off and panicked. We aren't sure about the rest. Could be accidental. Could be intentional self-harm. We haven't had the chance to talk with her yet because we had to medicate her when she woke up to put her back under." The nurse checked her watch. "She should wake up sometime in the next two hours."
The nurse paused and looked at Hide straight on. "How long have you known her?"
"For almost a decade," Hide said, smiling.
"Then you coming in here might actually be a good thing. There's some paperwork and forms that need to be filled out, but seeing as she's unconscious and has no familial relations in the room..."
Hide nodded. "I should be able to fill it out, for the most part."
The nurse smiled. "Great. Makes my job a little easier." She sat down at a chair with wheels and opened up a laptop, bringing up a medical history form. "All right, let's start with the basics. Name, first middle last."
"Ken Kaneki. No middle name."
She nodded, typing it in. "Date of birth?"
"December 20th, 1999."
"Is she taking any medication?"
Hide shook his head. "Not that I know of."
"Any ongoing illnesses that we should know about?"
"Nope."
"All right..." The nurse typed it all in and scrolled down. "Any history of cardiovascular problems? Respiratory problems? Smoking? Drinking?"
"No, no, no, and no."
"All right..." The nurse went on. "Has Ms. Kaneki been a patient here before? If she has, her previous medical history should be in our electronic archives."
"Yes," Hide said, clenching his jaw slightly.
"And when was this?"
"About a year ago," Hide answered, massaging his left hand with his right fingers and applying unnecessary pressure on his knuckles.
"And what was the occasion?" the nurse asked, looking up.
"Rape."
