four ; the advance guard

After four days of agonizing chaos, Diana was finally called down to the kitchen by Dumbledore. When she arrived, she noticed a small group was seated at the table, with Dumbledore at the head. Mad-Eye was there, with Remus next to him. There was Tonks and Kingsley, Elphias Doge, Dedalus Diggle, Emmeline Vance, Sturgis Podmore and Hestia Jones. The last five she had only met a few times, for they rarely came to Headquarters unless absolutely necessary.

Dumbledore held out a hand to the nearest chair. "Sit, Diana." She obliged. As she looked around the table, she noticed everyone was excited for something.

"Diana, this is the guard who will be fetching Harry for us tonight." Everyone around the table gave a nod. "I'd like for you to be a part of it."

Diana turned her head to Dumbledore so fast she thought she might've gotten whiplash. "Me? Why me? I'm underage, I can't use my wand, what good will it do for me to be there?"

A few of the members around the table glanced at each other, but Dumbledore was the one to speak. "I haven't been completely truthful with you," he said, and Diana furrowed her eyebrows, waiting for him to continue. "When I got you out of St. Mungo's, I told you I needed approval from the Ministry. I did need it, but I didn't ask for it."

"What are you saying?" forced Diana. He stayed silent, and she understood. "You broke me out of St. Mungo's illegally!" she said, slamming her palms onto the table.

"For now, it seems that way. I was waiting to get approval because they would've registered you to be monitored. You haven't been registered to be monitored for the Statute of Secrecy. I did it so you'd be able to use your wand," he said quickly, trying to make sure she didn't get out of control.

She furrowed her eyebrows. "You're saying I could've used my wand this entire time?"

Wordlessly, Dumbledore pulled her wand out of his robes and handed it to her. She took it eagerly, examining it as if checking for injuries. She felt exhilarated and powerful with her wand in her hands. It gave her a raw sort of energy she didn't have before. She looked up at Dumbledore. "But why me?"

"Trust me, Diana."

She did.

Dumbledore spoke one last time. "You all will be leaving soon. Be careful."

Harry Potter sat at his desk, fiddling with a quill idly. The Dursleys had left a little while ago to claim some stupid prize for some stupid competition and he was left here, locked in his room at night with no information whatsoever. He had been here for four weeks, locked in his room or under the window in the bushes outside and he had not gotten one word from anyone. He had gotten attacked by Dementors, why has nobody come for him?

As if on cue, something smashed in the kitchen. Someone hissed as well, not animal-like, but as if they were angry. Harry immediately grabbed his wand, pointing it at the door. All of a sudden, the lock clicked open and the door swung inward to reveal a huddled mass of people in the hall below.

"Lower your wand, boy, before you take someone's eye out."

Harry recognized that voice. "Professor Moody?" he said uncertainly.

"I don't know much about 'Professor,'" he growled. "Never got around to much teaching, did I? Get down here, we want to see you properly."

Harry lowered his wand slightly but didn't move.

"It's all right, Harry. We've come to take you away."

"Professor Lupin?" Harry said in disbelief. "Is that you?"

"Why are we all standing in the dark?" said a third voice. This time, it was a woman. "Lumos."

One wand tip flared, illuminating the hall below. A group of people sat before him, craning their necks to get a good look at him. Except one, he noticed, had her (he only knew it was a her due to the long dark hair) back to them, observing some of the obnoxious family photos of the Dursleys on the opposite wall.

Remus Lupin was nearest. He smiled at Harry, who tried to smile back despite his unwavering shock.

"Oooh, he looks just like I thought he would," said the witch who was holding her lit wand aloft. "Wotcher, Harry!"

"Yeah, I see what you mean, Remus," said a bald black wizard in a deep voice. "He looks exactly like James."

"Except the eyes. Lily's eyes," said a wheezy-voiced silver-haired man.

"Are you quite sure it's him, Lupin?" growled Moody. "It'd be a nice lookout if we bring back some Death Eater impersonating him."

The long-haired girl spoke up next. She didn't turn around, though. "That's not a Death Eater impersonating him," she practically spat. Obviously, for some reason it was a sore subject. "You're so suspicious all of the time. Doesn't it get exhausting?"

Moody ignored the last quip. "Yes, all right, fine. But if we get back to Headquarters with a Death Eater in tow I will make sure you never see the light of day again!" he growled. The girl, with her back still turned, merely hummed in response.

"Harry, what form does your Patronus take?" interrupted Lupin.

"A stag," he answered.

"That's him, Mad-Eye," confirmed Lupin.

Harry put his wand in his back pocket, but was immediately told off by Moody about loosing a buttock.

"Who d'you know who's lost a buttock?" asked the dark-haired girl (still, frustratingly, with her back turned) and the pink-haired woman simultaneously.

Moody growled some response about elementary wand safety.

Lupin held out his hand and shook Harry's. "How are you?" he asked, looking at Harry closely.

"F-fine..."

"We are leaving, aren't we?" Harry asked after some conversation. "Soon?"

"Almost at once," said Lupin, "we're just waiting for the all-clear."

"Where are we going? The Burrow?" Harry asked hopefully.

"Not, the Burrow, no. Too risky," answered Lupin. "We've set up headquarters somewhere undetectable. It's taken awhile..."

Lupin then gestured to Moody who was sitting at the kitchen table. "This is Alastor Moody, Harry."

"Yeah, I know," Harry replied awkwardly.

"And this is Nymphadora-"

"Don't call me Nymphadora, Remus," said the witch. "It's Tonks."

"-Nymphdora Tonks, who prefers to be know by her surname only," Remus finished.

"And this is Kingsley Shacklebolt, Elphias Doge, Dedalus Diggle, Sturgis Podmore, Emmeline Vance, and Hestia Jones," said Lupin, pointing at each person respectively. Harry noticed he didn't introduce the dark-haired girl yet.

"Who's that?" Harry pointed to the girl who had wandered further into the living room.

Everyone looked back at her unconsciously. Tonks spoke up. "Ahh, Harry, I'd like you to meet Diana R-"

Everyone in the entire room except Harry gave a collective cough. Tonks stopped and her eyes widened. "Er, sorry, this is Diana," she hastened to cover up.

Finally, she walked from the living room to where they were all standing and he could finally see her face.

Everything about her was dark. Her eyes, her hair, the shadows her cheekbones and jaw cast.

Harry recognized her.

He had never seen her in real life, no. He had seen her frequently in his nightmares and dreams, her face littered his thoughts while asleep. Diana. He had been wondering when he'd find out who she was.

She gave him a reserved smile. "Nice to finally meet you, Harry."

The more he looked at her, the more he realized his headache was getting worse. He smiled lightly at her before turning away to meet the eyes of Lupin who had just started talking.

"A surprising number of people volunteered to come get you," Lupin said. Diana pointedly coughed. "Except for Diana, who was forced to come."

He wanted to ask why but didn't get the chance.

They all talked some more, waiting for whatever signal was to come so that they could leave. Harry's eyes couldn't help but wander to the girl in interest every few seconds.

Eventually, Harry couldn't take it. "What's going on, I haven't heard anything from anyone, what's Vol-?"

Several members hissed, Dedalus Diggle dropped his hat, Moody growled, and Diana, who had been watching the conversation quietly, flinched slightly and her eyes flashed with such fury Harry felt the need to step away. The look of anger left immediately, though, and her face was back the way it was: impassive and calculating.

"What?" Harry said.

"We're not discussing anything here, it's too risky," said Moody. His magical eye stuck in his socket, and Moody swore as he took it out with a nasty squelching sound.

Diana fetched a glass of water quickly and handed it to Moody, who plopped him magical eye into it.

"How're we getting - wherever we're going?" Harry asked.

"Brooms," said Lupin. "Only way. You're too young to Apparate, they'll be watching the Floo Network, and it's more than our life's worth to set up an unauthorized Portkey."

"Remus says you're a good flier," said Kingsley in his deep voice.

"That's what I hear as well," said Diana idly. "I hear you made it onto the Gryffindor team your first year. Practically unheard of."

"He's excellent," said Lupin, who checked his watch. "Anyway, you'd better go and get packed, Harry, we want to be ready to go when the signal comes. Diana, could you go and help him?"

She nodded once and followed Harry up the stairs to his bedroom. They entered his room and he turned on the light. He immediately started piling things into his trunk as Diana just stared at his room.

"Sorry about all of the people," she said abruptly. "I can only imagine how much of a shock it would be if a bunch of people you didn't know showed up at your house."

"It's okay," he said, grabbing things from his desk. "It's nice to see people."

She smiled like she knew what he was talking about. Something crashed downstairs, and she snickered. "That'd be Tonks. For an Auror, she's extremely clumsy."

"She's an Auror?" Harry asked. He was now grabbing things from under his bed.

"Yeah," nodded Diana. "She's a Metamorphagus so she scored top marks in her Concealment and Disguise test." Seeing Harry's blank face she explained. "A Metamorphagus can change their appearance at will." She looked around his room some more, her eyes landing on a picture of Lily and James Potter. She stared for a moment before snapping out of her daze. "Kingsley is an Auror as well. And Mad-Eye used to be one, as you know."

Diana stared at Harry working to gather all of his things and she realized she could actually use magic. "Oh, sorry, let me help you." She waved her wand across the room and everything soared into his trunk, perfectly neat and tidy. He looked at her confused.

"How old are you?" he asked. She looked too young to be seventeen--in fact she looked right about his age.

She looked up from the trunk. "Oh, I'm fifteen. It's a long story," she said, as if she read his mind.

She waved her wand again, and the trunk lifted off of the ground and floated down the stairs.

"You can do wordless magic?" Harry asked. Not even Hermione could do that.

She smiled lightly. "Yes, I can," was all she said before she followed the trunk down the stairs. Harry grabbed Hedwig's cage in one hand and his broomstick in the other and followed her down, now even more confused about her than he was before.

•••

Diana wasn't listening to the group's conversation anymore after she walked down the stairs from his bedroom. Tonight had been a little too much for her. Seeing Harry for the first time was scary. It was a bleak reminder of a reality in which she didn't really like.

She could tell he was curious about her. She noticed him glance at her every few seconds; he was intrigued. She puzzled him, and she knew it.

She also noticed just how clueless he really was. Just about the Order and the Wizarding world's fate. He had no idea what was coming, and he had no clue what was happening. In that moment she realized she really was furious with Dumbledore for not keeping Harry in the loop--it'll work against them in the end. She knew he'll get antsy and frustrated when he realizes no one will tell him anything. She knows he'll become resentful and angry.

Diana looked over and noticed Moody was just now placing the Disillusionment Charm on Harry. "Diana, you too," Moody said gruffly. She walked over and he tapped her on the head, and she felt the cold trickles move down her body until she was perfectly blended into her surroundings.

"Come on," said Moody, unlocking the back door and stomping out into the lawn. Everyone followed and since Diana was the last one out, she closed the door and locked it with her wand.

"Clear night," grunted Moody. Everyone grabbed their brooms from their perch against the side of the house. "Could've done with a bit more cloud cover."

"Right, you," he barked at Harry. "We're going to be flying in close formation. Tonks'll be right in front of you, keep close on her tail. Lupin'll be covering you from below. Diana will be far ahead, keeping lookout in front of Tonks. I'll be behind you, and the rest will be circling us. We don't break ranks for anything, got me? If one of us is killed-"

"Is that likely?" Harry asked apprehensively. Moody ignored him, but Diana whispered "not with me here," and Harry couldn't help but overhear her.

"-the others keep flying, don't stop, don't break ranks. If they take out all of us and you survive, Harry and Diana, the rear guard are standing by to take over; keep flying east and they'll join you."

"Piss off, Alastor! Stop being such a buzzkill," Diana said, and Tonks grinned.

"I'm just telling the boy the plan," growled Moody. "Our job's to deliver him safely to headquarters and if we die in the attempt-"

"No one's going to die," inserted Kingsley.

A shower of bright red sparks fanned out above them. "Mount your brooms, that's the first signal!" said Lupin sharply, and they all kicked off of the ground.

Diana flew directly to the front, a little ways in front of Tonks and the rest. She was keeping lookout so far ahead in the danger zone for one reason: Tom or his Death Eaters would never kill her. She has the advantage.

They flew for at least an hour. Diana had lost track of time, what with swooping in and out of prying Muggle eyesight and taking orders from Mad-Eye. They had all nearly frozen off of their brooms from the cold, and Diana was beyond ready to get to Headquarters when Lupin called out, saying it was time to descend.

They all followed Diana into a dive, wind whipping in their ears and fingers numb from the cold.

They landed in no time, and they all dismounted their brooms and looked towards the surrounding houses.

Diana walked over to Harry. "Welcome to the Order if the Phoenix. I think you'll like it much better here. I know I did."
