Chapter 2: Sorry, wrong mailbox

Zach opened up the chicken feed and threw it on the ground. Three chickens heard the shuffling of seeds in the bag. One was a white chicken, a black chicken, and a brown one.

"Food!"

"Food?"

"Food!?"

"Yes, it's food." Zach answered.

The chickens began to peck on the seeds. Zach sat down and watched them eat. Zach stared at the dirt. The white chicken pecked at his feet.

"Is Zach not happy?" The chicken cocked her head at him.

"No, just thinking." He responded.

"What is he thinking?" She asked.

"Stuff, you wouldn't get it-" He jumped when he heard the creaking noise of his mailbox. It was the same lady again. She was about to put something in the mailbox. When she saw him, she pulled the letter away.

"O-oh! Hello mister Raven, have your family members informed you about the school?" She asked with that sweet smile.

"Yes, but that's the wrong mailbox." He responded.

"Huh?" She fixed her glasses. "B-but I'm pretty sure this is your mailbox I mean it's right in front of your house and this is your ad-"

"I'm sorry miss, but I don't want to go to your school." Zach picked up one of the chickens and pet it gently, "There are a bunch of kids out there who have more capabilities than me. They probably want that envelope more than me. I don't see why I would want to go, when I've already have these responsibilities at home."

"I understand that you don't want to go, and I won't force you. But keep in mind that your powers have so much capabilities. I've met many kids like you, children who doubt their true potentials even though they have the powers that can save the universe! Our school wants students like you to notice your powers and be able to save the world."

Zach thought for a bit. He wasn't really the whole superhero type of guy, he just wanted to live a normal life. He didn't hate his powers, nor did he want to lose them. Zach never understood why he had these powers, he wasn't the chosen one. He did wanted to know why he was given this ability.

"Who knows what you could become," she continued, "You could save lives, build civilizations out of scratch, bring back the extinct and gone! You have an ability, use it to your advantage." The smile she held onto faded away.

"Of course, you probably don't care. Not everybody wants to be a glimmering star. But, if you ever rethink about joining, you can look in the wrong mailbox." She placed the letter into the mailbox and walked off.

As soon as she disappeared down the block, Zach went into the mailbox and grabbed the letter. He shoved in his pocket and dragged the chicken feed back inside.

His mom looked up from her newspaper, "Hey sweetie, did you check the mail?"

"Nope." He responded back. He placed the chicken feed back to its corner. His mom stopped him before going back upstairs.

"Honey, we don't want to force you to go, but we want a brighter and better future for you. You don't have to be another blade of grass in the earth." She scrubbed his hair. "Love you, lillybear."

Zach smiled back, "And I love you too, sunshine flower." Zach walked up the stairs and back to his bedroom.

He flopped onto his bed and stared at the letter. He studied the white paper and the wax that locked up the inside. Should he become something greater than him, or live a normal life? The lady's words were taped into his memory. Maybe he is something greater than what he is now. He can help others like no one has before. But he'll miss his family, and probably lose the chance to be normal instead of being involved in this magic mumbo jumbo.

The more he thought, the more he argued with himself, the more he wanted to go see what Rosenducks is like. He wanted to unlock his true potential everyone's been telling him he has. What if the normal life wasn't his cup of tea? He looked at the letter and placed it on his face, beginning to doze off again.

"Lillybear! Dinner's ready!"

Zach launched up from his bed. He looked at the clock and saw it was 7:30, he sleeps too much. Zach got up and headed downstairs to the kitchen. The table was round with a red checker cloth covering it, with four seats standing around it. His grandmother was sitting in her chair and his mom was setting up the food and plates. Zach sat on the seat across from grandma.

"Tonight is carrot soup and green beans!" She smiled, placing the food on their plates, "Mom eat your vegetables this time."

"Hmph! I'm an old lady, I don't deserve this." Grandma pouted.

Zach grabbed a bread and began to munch down on the food. His mom, taking small bites and his grandma picking at her food. It was quiet for a bit.

"So darling, did you decided to join Rosenducks yet?" Grandma asked, a big smile on her face.

"Well... I don't know about this. I mean, I got everything that I need." Zach mumbled.

"But you should go! They do amazing things in there like tame wild beasts, learn ancient languages, and-"

"Mom, if he doesn't want to go, then he doesn't need to go." Mom interrupted.

"Well Drae didn't want to go at first but he-"

"Mom, we don't talk about dad at the table." Mom's voice got louder, she stabbed her green beans a little too harsh.

"Did grandpa go to Rosenducks?" Zach asked. He didn't know why he did asked, knowing that it would hurt mom.

"We both did! He used to be so stubborn back then, whining about school work and everything. He was a star student still!" Grandma continued.

"What kind of powers did he have?" Zach asked.

"He was a pyromancer, and a real hothead back then. But he matured and grew up." Grandma wiped her glasses.

"I see your old man in you. Calm and collective, but doesn't let people walk over him. He's independent and looks out for himself and everyone. You can be just like him, maybe even join the arm-"

"MOM! Please..." His mom interrupted once again. She was all teary eyed and was holding it in.

"Sorry honey, I got carried away..." She pat her on the head to comfort her.

Zach poked around at his food just like grandma. He kept on thinking about that letter and what the lady said back there. What can he become? What kind of potential does he have? Why does he even want to go to this school anyways? He broke out of his thoughts when his stomach growled. Might as well eat, you can't think without an empty stomach.

After dinner, Zach began to prepare for bed. Brushed his teeth, dressed into some pajamas, and combed his hair. When he got into bed, he felt something under his sheets. He grabbed the foreign object, but it was just the letter.

"We should open it."

"What? Why?"

"Let's join the school, maybe we'll like it."

"Why would we want to go?"

"I don't know, maybe we'll find out why."

"Well what if it sucks? What if no one likes us? What if they only accept purebred elves? What if the school is one huge scam?"

"It won't be awful until we know it's awful."

"What you're doing is stupid and a bad idea."

"I know."

Zach opened up the letter.
