Chapter 1: Not my story
Hello, my name is Zach. I live with my grandma and mom in our flower shop. We live in a town called Foxivale. I help around my family's shop everyday and feed the chickens in the frontyard. I lived a simple life, and I enjoyed it, but I definitely never asked for this life. I've attempted to ignore the weird in my life, but you can't escape destiny can you? Especially if it ever involved magic, dragons, and any of that crazy stuff. Yeah, that's definitely not my kind of life...
"Zach darling! I need your help!" Zach's mom called out from downstairs.
Zach got up from his bed, the light reflected on his face and attempted to block the light. Zach scratched his white hair. He had dark skin and purple eyes. He got out of his pajamas and got into his casual wear, a white shirt and blue shorts. He moved down the stairs and opened up the door that lead to the flower shop.
His mom, carrying a bunch of fertilizer, noticed the messy haired elf boy. "Honey there's a reason why I buy hair brushes." She used her free hand to comb back some of Zach's hair.
"What do you need men to do mom?" He asked grogily.
"Can you help that lady over there?" She pointed at a brown haired woman. The woman had round glasses and curled goat horns. She held a clipboard.
"Yes, ma'am." Zach saluted.
His grandmother grabbed him by the arm and began to dust him off. She quickly combed his hair and wiped his face with a handkerchief.
"Stand straight and tall, answer all of her questions, and be sure to-"
"Ahem, mom? You're being suspicious." His mom coughed.
"Oh! Right, don't wanna blow the big reveal!" Grandma joked.
"What reveal?" Zach questioned.
His grandma just giggle and booped his nose.
He ignored the mischevious boop and grabbed a red apron and walked towards the lady. The woman seemed to be jotting down some notes. Zach coughed to grab her attention. The woman jumped up, almost dropping her clipboard.
"O-oh, Sorry! Are you Zachery Raven by any chance?" She asked.
"Um... yes?" He cocked an eyebrow. The lady scribbled something on her clipboard, forgetting she was talking to him.
"So, are you the inspector?"
The woman looked up from her board again, "Uh... yes! Yes I am! In a way... may I get this flower please?" She points at a potted tulip. The tulip was wilting and its stem is bended.
"This one?" He pointed at the tulip. The lady nodded in response. "Wouldn't you prefer a more healthy flower?"
"No, but I've been told you can revive dead plants? B-but I've been told it's a rumor! If you can though may I see you do it?" She asked, her palms sweating.
Zach sighed. It wasn't a secret that he had a little bit of magic in him. He had the ability to heal wilting plants and well... talk to animals. Sometimes people will enter the flower shop just to see him work his magic. It bugged him a lot.
"Sure, I'll do it." He grabbed the tulip and placed it on the ground. The lady watched him intensely.
Zach sat on the floor and focused on the plant. He then grabbed the stem gently and closed his eyes. He takes a deep breath and clears his mind from any distractions. He slowly counted to three in his head.
One... two... three.
He opened up his eyes and there in the pot was a bright pink tulip. The woman looked impressed and wrote down some more things. Behind him,
"That's very unique set of skills my boy! Were you born with these skills?" She asked.
"Yes, the whole magic thing was passed down through my family." Zach answered, watching the woman write down more things.
"Do you have any other magic abilities? J-just asking!"
"Hm... is understanding the chickens and what they're saying count?" Zach questioned.
"Interesting.. ability to communicate with nature..." She mumbled, writing down even more notes. She clicked her pen and pushed up her glasses. She gleefully shooked his hand, "Thank you so much Mister Raven! I hope to see you in the future!" She then walked out of the store.
"See me in the future?" He repeated.
Suddenly, his mom and grandma begin to cheer. They both pick up Zach and hug him thightly, giving him kisses on the cheek.
"Yes! My baby is going to a magic school! I'm so proud!" His mom cheered, jumping up and down.
"Another bright mind for a brighter future!" Grandma added.
"Wait what?" Zach questioned.
His mom put him down on the ground, "You see honey, that was the accountant at Rosenducks school. I asked her to come over and see if you were qualified to enter their school."
"And guess who's going there! This guy!" His grandma poked his cheek.
Zach was confused.
"Mom, what's Rosenducks?"
"Rosenducks is where gifted children of magic go to learn how to be one with their powers. They'll learn ancient spells, learn about acceptance and honor, and find meaning to their potential." His grandma explained.
"Your grandmother used to go to that school, we want you to go too." His mom smiled.
Zach smiled back, "Thanks mom... but no thanks."
"What? But you can learn about magic and-"
"And I want to learn how to pay my taxes mom. I'm 12, a soon-to-be teen. I know you want me to go on these high fantasy quests but really, I don't think I want that in my system. I don't want to be special mom, sorry." Zach shrugged. He grabs the chicken feed from the counter.
"I'm gonna go feed the gang now." Zach opened up the front door and closed it.
The two of them stood in silence.
"Well, at least he didn't whine." Grandma said.
(A/N: Whoop! I'm really happy that I've finally finished what I started. I started this draft last year and never finished it, but after some editing it's finally out. Thank you for reading, it really means a lot!)
