Solitary
Ruby pov
When I come to, I immediately know something's wrong.
"Pink?" No ship.
"Pink?" I ask again, more worried. No Blue Diamond.
"Pink!" No Sapphire.
"PINK!" My scream echoes throughout the hall. No sound, nothing but the metal ceiling of the docking bay.
It takes me a moment, but I soon realize I can't move. And that I'm crying.
Sapphire's gone. She's been taken back to homeworld where I'll never find her.
"Ruby?" A weak voice calls out in distress.
"Sapphire?" I ask, full to the brim with hope. There's no answer. What feels like hours have gone by. Then, I realize it probably has been hours.
The buzz of the lights goes silent. It does that every night. But what makes this different is the lack of last minute footsteps.
It's not until it's totally silent that you realize just how much sound is around.
Quartz footsteps.
Machinery whirring.
Cafeteria conversations.
I'm cold. It feels as if I'm laying in a pool of cold water. So all I can do is stare blankly at the metal ceiling, illuminated only by the stars outside.
Somewhere, something falls. What concerns me is my lack of concern. It's almost like I don't even care. Either everyone left, everyone died, or I died.
The last one seems most likely.
"This is it," I say, chuckling lightly. "I've died. And now I'm here, waiting for my soul to pass on. That voice I heard earlier was just someone mourning my death. Oh well. Hopefully the Moon Goddess is merciful." More silence.
Then, footsteps. Light, rushed ones. In the corner of my eye, I see something pink. I don't bother to glance over, until I see the gem come closer.
"You! You're that Ruby!" The Pink Pearl says.
"Yep, that's me." I sigh. "How long until I pass on?"
"What are you talking about?" She asks. I notice something different.
"What's with you're eyes? And where's your gem?" She blushes, and leaves.
I'm there for awhile longer.
The company of that Pearl would be nice.
Hell, the company of Jadeite would be nice right now.
"I really am dead, huh?" I say to my friend the ceiling. "This is all just my conscious trying to make amends for my life."
"Well that's certainly a way to think of this." A familiar voice challenges.
"Pearl!"
"That's right!" The smirking gem steps into view, trying to lift the fallen pieces of metal that I now realize hold down my limbs.
"Where were you?" I ask, hoping I'm not dead.
"On a shuttle," She responds, working hard. "We decided it would be safest in case anything was detonated,"
"What do you mean?" I ask, pulling my left arm free.
"I mean we had to leave in case Yellow Diamond set off more bombs." My breath hitches.
"So, that voice I heard... was somebody dying?" She nods. "Well how long have I been out?"
"Almost a day," she responds, freeing my legs. I help her pull the metal off my other arm, and she helps me stand.
"Woah..." The hanger looks completely different than it did just yesterday. Exposed wires and fallen debris are everywhere.
"Who got out?" I asked, knowing it can't have been many.
"Not too many. After you were knocked out, Yellow Diamond set off the first bomb," She started projecting the scene from her gem.
"The first blast sent rubble everywhere. White Diamond was crushed."
"Sister!" The projection of White Diamond screamed, the shriek sending chills down my spine.
"Then Yellow and Blue Diamond boarded the ship with the rest of the high class gems, Sapphire included. Pink tried to get as many gems and possible to the docking bay to get on shuttles. Many didn't even get this far." She solemnly looks to the ground.
"Pink could only get a few gems out-"
"Define a few." I demand. Pearl looks down.
"No more than seventy." She answers. I think again to the distressed call, suddenly finding the gem seems the only thing to do. So I run over to the pile.
"What on Homeworld are you doing?" Pearl asks. I ignore her, digging until I see a blue hand.
Horrified, I pull out the body of...
"Turquoise..." I mutter. "Turquoise, are you okay? Turquoise!" I continue shouting through sobs, even as Pearl drags me away. "Turquoise! Turquoise!"
