Girl sees Girl
Ruby pov
I grab a lunch tray and get in line. The cafeteria bustles with the noise of gems eating lunch between shifts.
Not that I'm complaining, because I like the noise.
Anyhow, I get my lunch and sit down at my usual table. A few people are already there. Red Beryl and Turquoise sit and talk about their jobs, while a Pearl sits at the end of the table eating quickly, waiting for lunch to be over like most Pearls do. Nothing ever really changes in the lunchroom. Or anywhere on the Satellite. Except for one thing.
"Who's that gem over there?" I ask. Her skin is dark blue, and her long curly hair is a lighter blue. She sits alone at a table, just smiling and eating her food.
"Oh, her?" Red Beryl asks, yawning. "She's a Sapphire. Came over a couple days ago." I'd heard of Sapphires before, but I'd never seen one.
"She looks lonely." I lie, looking for a reason to talk to her. "I'm gonna go see if she wants to sit with us." I stand up to go over to her, but Red Beryl grabs my wrist.
"Are you kidding? You're a Ruby. Now, I have nothing against Rubies, I'm not that kind of gem. But you can't just go talk to a Sapphire. It's just not possible!" I sigh. Red Beryl can be so self centered and annoying.
"Come on Red. I'll be fine." I twist out of her grip and walk over to Sapphire.
She looks at me, and I notice how her hair covers her eyes.
"Hello," She says, smiling brightly. "My name is Sapphire. What's yours?" I blush. Her voice is pretty, like she's singing.
"My name is Ruby. It's nice to meet you." In my mind a slap myself in the face. I remember why I came here. "Uh, do you want to sit with me and my friends? " I ask, unsure of her answer.
Before she can reply, a bell rings, signaling the end of lunch.
"Oh no! I wasted your time and now you have no time to eat!" I yell, lifting the chair above my head. A few people give us odd looks. Sapphire giggles. "What's wrong?" I ask., the chair still above my head.
"You overreacted. I wasn't that hungry. " Sapphire says. "It was nice meeting you, Ruby." She says with a smile, kissing my cheek.
She walks out, turning to wave. I blush, then remember I have a chair above my head and five minutes to get halfway across the satellite.
"Damn it!"
