Why Me?!
You knew that you and dad would have to go on this mission. That's why you had me back the bag, and told me to pack enough clothes for at least 12 days." Bryn accuses Ruby after a few seconds of thinking.
"Love, you know-" Ruby starts before being saved by Hitch, who had been silently observing the scene that was unfolding in front of him.
"Hey Ruby, I was wondering if I could borrow the kid for a couple of seconds. Blacker and Froghorn are working on a theory for something, and for some reason they need Bryn. They starting talking high-tech geek stuff about force, acceleration, mass, and started naming all these formulas." Hitch states, slightly lying, and slightly telling the truth. Froghorn and Blacker did need Bryn, what for wasn't really stated though, but whatever it was, it wasn't for work.
Hitch didn't usually lie, if he didn't have too. It was sort of his own rule, but he also knew that if he did leave these two together, words that should never be said by mother to daughter, and vice versa, would fly about, and with such a high risk case, those shouldn't be the last words that were uttered by both of them. He was determined that Bryn would never have to go through the grief of losing her parents at such a young age, but her last words definitely shouldn't be 'I hate you mom.' She shouldn't have to deal with grief on top of those words haunting her; she shouldn't have to live what he had to.
Before he even finished his last sentence, Bryn was moving over to him, staring directly at Ruby, silently begging to go with him.
Ruby shakes her head and sighs, before finally lifting her eyes heavenward and stating "Go on."
Bryn grabbed Hitch's hand and was moving out of the room so fast that she nearly missed her mom call "Be good."
"I always am." Bryn states as she shuts the door to the lab and takes off sprinting to Blacker's office, barely making all the twists and turns of the corridor.
"So, are we playing 3 person Nertz, is Hitch joining us for Spades, or are y'all ready to get crushed in 'I'm thinking of an animal?'" Bryn states as soon as she opens Blacker's door, not even bothering to say greet them, or knock for that matter.
"Considering the fact that I still have paperwork to fill out before the end of today, it's going to have to be I'm thinking of an animal." Blacker states, causing Froghorn to groan, and Beyn to smirk.
"Hitch isn't going to like this idea." Froghorn states, desperately trying to change Bryan's mind, since Blacker can't say no to her.
"He can get over it too. Come on uncle Miles, it'll be fun! I'll even let you go first." Bryn replies, trying her best to sound encouraging, while she really just wanted make all of them really frustrated.
"Fine. I'm going to do one so simple that you will never guess it. It's an invertebrate and it lives on land-" Froghorn starts, before being completely cut off by a smirking and impatient Bryn.
"Snail." Bryn states, and both her and Blacker have to do everything they can to suppress their laughter at the face that Miles fakes. Let's just say that they both knew that Bryn got it.
"Hey guys, is Bryn.... Judging by the look on Froghorn's face, Bryn is here, and she did it again." Hitch states upon entering the room.
"Yes, on both occasions. And you're going next." Froghorn bitterly states.
"Oh, okay. The animal I'm thinking of is piglike and-"
"Hitch, you're supposed to start with what it's name starts with." Bryn whines, causing Hitch to laugh and shake his head.
"Fine, it starts with an a, and it lives-"
"Aardvark. Did you know that it's name translates to Earth Pig?" Bryn cuts in, causing Blacker to let out a laugh, Froghorn to sigh, and Hitch to just shake his head.
"Alright my turn. I'm thinking of an animal that starts with the initials C F." Blacker states to be immediately met with a couple of seconds of silence. Enough time for Hitch to look at his watch and start counting down the seconds of silence from 10.
Once Hitch reaches 5, Bryn immediately blurts out "Clown Fish." This causes everyone to get slightly frustrated, since this was the longest moment of silence that had happened since they started playing this game. For once, they thought that Bryn had been stuck.
"And it's finally my turn. I have one that y'all will never guess. It's initals are GGBL." Bryn firmly states, immediately causing Hitch to groan and shoot her an evil look, Froghorn to put his face on the desk, and Blacker to look frustrated.
"I know this. I know this. It's the Greater Golden Bamboo Lemur!" Blacker happily exclaims, causing Bryn to look completely shocked.
"How did you know that?!" Bryn exclaims, causing Froghorn and Hitch to look stunned. Someone has actually managed to guess one of her animals. This had happened... never. Not even Ruby or SJ could guess one of her animals; no one could.
"SJ has been going on and on about the discovery of them. Apparently they're important, somehow." Blacker states, causing Bryn to look flabbergasted. When everyone saw the look on her face, they all groaned, and Froghorn punched Blacker, because they knew she was about to lecture them on what was important about the Greater Golden Bamboo Lemur, whatever it was.
"Greater Golden Bamboo Lemur. Scientific name: Hapalemur aureus. It's the most endangered lemur, and they're only found in one place, where all the rest if lemurs, fossa's, temerics, and half of the world's species of chameleons are found, Madagascar! They eat bamboo, which is really impressive since bamboo can kill most animals that eat it, since it's poisonous. In lemur life, the females are boss, which is one reason why they're the best species. Males and females look similar, though the females will look slightly more gray, probably because they have the put up with kids. Speaking of babies, the mothers will carry their babies around on their backs as they go in about they're day-to-day life. These creatures are super secretive, and not such besides what I just stated is known about them, yet." Bryn delivers at the fastest she could talk, and everyone could understand her.
Much to her disappointment, her mini-lecture was met with silence, besides LB starting to clap, completely scaring everyone in the room except Bryn, who has noticed LB entering the room as soon as she started the lecture.
"I can almost completely confirm that the females are grayer because they have to take care of the children. The lead female is probably the most gray, because she has to put up with everything, such as the makes slacking off on they're with, or the children distracting them." LB dryly states, causing Hitch to make an excuse to leave quite quickly.
"Oh come on LB. It was just a small round. It didn't even last 3 minutes." Beyn states, trying to cover for Blacker and Froghorn.
"I know. I also know that either of them have finished filling out they're paperwork for the latest case. And you need to be getting home soon missy." LB firmly states, before moving out the door, an obvious sign that she wants her namesake to follow.
"I don't understand why I have to so soon. It's not like it's 8 or anything. It's still really early." Bryn complains as they head to LB's car.
"If 7 is early, then yes it is still early. And I'm not going to get a call from a teacher tomorrow because you were half asleep in class. Therefore as soon as we get home, you're going straight to bed."
"But why do I have to go to bed so early?" Bryn questions.
"Because I said so." LB snaps.
"But why did you say that?" It was at this moment, that LB realized that taking care of this particular child was not going to be as easy as she imagined.
Yes, this book does actually have a plot. It just takes a little while to get to it. So, it seems that little Bryn has become the soft spot for everyone is Spectrum, including LB. I mean, Froghorn willingly played a child's game with her.
