love will tear us apart
🖤
HER DAD DIED THAT NIGHT.
When Ruby was out cold, her body the Mind Flayer's again, her dad was killed. She found this out when she woke up — after the Mind Flayer was destroyed, and the mall was in flames, as she was sitting in the back of an ambulance, a blanket around her. She remembers going quiet as Joyce told her what happened; Ruby had looked past her, watching the paramedics cart another body out of the mall. The corpse's hand fell from the body bag, and Ruby knew it was Billy's.
It began to dawn on Ruby, the amount of people she killed that week. Her dad, her ex-boyfriend, all of those people she Flayed, even those Soviet guards...
And she didn't even stop the Mind Flayer.
That's the most infuriating part. She's caused so much death, but not the one she longs for. That thing has been destroyed — at least in this world it has — but she knows it isn't gone. She can feel it, a constant tension in her body. The Mind Flayer is lurking, watching, waiting for a gate to open. And that's when he'll be back, when he'll take her.
Because of all of this, she didn't speak for the rest of the day, lost in her own thoughts. And when she returned home that night, Joyce driving her back, the two found Aunt Carrie's body, mauled and bloody in the kitchen. Ruby stared at the body, but didn't need any more confirmation. That was her fault, too.
Ruby knows she was possessed, but it still weighs heavy on her heart. So much death and destruction was caused this summer, all because of her. She remembers what the Mind Flayer said to her, how the two of them were alike, and she can't help but agree.
Nancy told Ruby afterwards what happened, too. Apparently Flayed Ruby went straight for Steve, who had to return to the mall when he thought Ruby was in trouble. And apparently, instead of running from Flayed Ruby, he tried to talk to her. "If Billy hadn't sacrificed himself when he did..." Nancy told Ruby, but trailed off, uneasy about revealing the bloody truth.
But Ruby knows. She almost killed her boyfriend. Since Friday night, she's spent the entire weekend on her own, processing it all. Her entire life has crumbled to pieces. Her dad's dead, her auntie's dead, her sister's lost her powers — it's only Ruby, now, able to kill these monsters. At first, she felt shitty about it. All of these people know about the Upside Down, and yet, that made no difference. Ruby was out of action, so they lost.
It's always been her and the Upside Down, an awful entanglement that neither want. She's desperate to divorce herself from it, but she knows she's the first and last line of defense now.
And, because of this, her sadness is quickly manifesting into plotting. The Mind Flayer will be back, in one form or another — and, when it happens, Ruby will be ready. Subject X, back and angrier than ever.
Secretly, she wishes her grandpa was still alive. He was an ass, sure, but he'd know what to do, to kill this thing, to make her stronger. She knows the Mind Flayer was lying, when he said that her grandpa faked his death, but still. It didn't stop Ruby from floating in her bathtub, surrounded by salty water, an eye mask keeping the light out. She didn't find anything — all she saw was a Coke can, sitting on someone's kitchen table — but it was comforting, to entertain the idea of Martin Brenner, back again, helping his granddaughter.
It's the Monday now. Ruby's yet to leave the house, all of Hawkins flooded with national newspapers claiming the town to be cursed. It's not cursed, it's me, Ruby thought, before she unplugged the TV. The phone kept on ringing, too, with Hawkins locals sending their condolences about her dad — and her auntie, too, once that news broke. By Saturday night, Ruby's house had a constant stream of callers... By Sunday night, the telephone was ripped off the wall.
She thought about El, as she yanked the telephone from the cord. Ruby uses her powers more than she realises, she couldn't imagine losing them. She's spent her entire life running from her powers, and yet here she is, finally giving in. She'll accept the traumatic childhood, checking over her shoulder, terrified her monster was going to grab her. She'll accept the past couple years, constantly saving random teenagers getting involved in this shit. She never wanted it, but this is her life. Her mess to sort out. Alice, at long last, is accepting Wonderland.
... She doesn't know how she's going to do this, though. She thinks about breaking back into the lab, and seeing if she can find any info on that guy that ran the place after Grandpa. What was his name? She just remembers last year, when they interrogated herself and Steve over something Nancy and Jonathan were up to...
OK. She remembers threatening to kill him, when he suggested Steve would get hurt...
Speaking of.
Ruby hadn't moved from the couch all weekend — except to pee and hunt for her grandpa and destroy electronics reminding her of her monstrosities... and eat a couple of Pop Tarts — so she's seen neighbours knock on the door, wanting to share heartfelt sentiments. This is why she's been sitting in darkness, so they can't see her, glaring and hoping they'll go away. But, this time, she watches her boyfriend walk up the porch, holding red roses.
Ruby sighs. This is it.
She gets to her feet, hoping she doesn't look too awful. She opens the door, and forces a smile. Steve looks awkward, too. It's not for the same reason she feels awkward (or maybe it is? Maybe he's had the same thought? God, why does that upset her?), but still.
"Hey," she says.
"Hey," he says.
She steps to the side, to let him in. He walks past her, and hands her the flowers, which she wishes she didn't have to accept; awkwardly, she settles them down on the closest surface, the old display table underneath the telephone (well... where the telephone was.)
But, she catches a glimpse of his wrist, noticing the cast on his forearm. Her brows furrow — but he's spotted the telephone, ripped off the wall, sitting in the middle of the floor.
"Why did you...?" he begins.
Ruby looks around uncomfortably. "Too many calls," she says. She returns her focus to the cast on his arm, and points at it. "What...?"
"Oh." Steve shuffles, awkward. "It's from the other night..."
"From the guards?" she asks. She didn't remember him acting like his arm was hurt...
"No, uh..." And he trails off, like he doesn't want her to know.
Ruby feels her stomach sink, already knowing the answer. "Did I do that?"
"It wasn't you, though," he says. "It was the Mind Flayer."
Ruby can feel her eyes stinging. Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry—
"How, uh, are you doing?" he says. "I mean — I know you feel shitty, but, uh—"
Ruby feels like her entire body is hurting, physically restraining herself from saying what needs to be said. She struggles to get the words out, as if her powers are defending herself against herself.
"The Byers are moving to California, and Joyce is gonna be El's guardian," says Ruby.
This is all true — Joyce relayed all of this to Ruby... before Ruby tore the phone off the wall. Ruby felt a little relieved, because it gives her a better reason to end things in Hawkins. She can figure out her powers, get stronger, and come back one day. But, until then, she isn't stepping foot in this town.
"OK..."
"And, you know, I keep on getting modelling gigs there..." Ruby pauses, taking in a breath. She looks across at him, his face already fallen, knowing what she's going to say. "So I'm going to go, too."
"... You're moving away?"
She nods. "You knew I didn't wanna stay here, Steve."
She watches him go quiet for a minute, processing all of this. Ruby can feel a pit of dread appear in her stomach, like she can feel what he's feeling. She's known him her entire life, they've been best friends, then lovers — Steve Harrington is a part of Ruby by this point. And so, she knows what he's thinking, how he's feeling. How he's reacting to all of this.
He runs his fingers through his hair, thinking things through.
"OK... OK..." He looks over at her, a plan in his mind. "Well, I've got some money saved up, so I can come and visit... And if you don't wanna come back to Hawkins, then, I'll find a job and I can move out there with you..."
Ruby feels her heart crack.
"... Steve," she says.
Steve looks across at her. "Are you breaking up with me?"
Her eyes well up. Steve takes that as a yes, and turns away from her.
"I'm sorry," she says. "I just—You're only involved in this because of me, and look at your face! Every single time this shit happens, you're beaten up by the end of it. And—And you stormed into a foreign military base, for what? To prove yourself as a hero? It's because of me, it's because you've seen me with these powers, being reckless—I've given you too much confidence. And—And your arm—I hurt you! I don't care if I was Flayed, it was me! The Mind Flayer wanted to kill you, he wanted me to kill you! If Billy hadn't died when he did—"
Ruby breaks off, choking out a sob. She goes quiet for a second, trying to calm herself down. Steve still hasn't turned around. She thinks he's about to cry — she's rarely seen him like that, and the thought that he's crying now breaks her heart. Ruby wishes she didn't have to do this, she wishes she lived in a world where this wasn't an issue, but she knows this is right. It's fair to Steve, this way... Even if he doesn't see it like that just yet.
She steps forwards, to reach out to him.
She places her hand on his arm. "If you die, Steve, because of this, I will never forgive myself... And it's your close proximity to me that's going to get you killed—"
"No, it's because I live in Hawkins," says Steve, turning around, snatching himself away from her. "Have you not seen the news? We're being called cursed. I'm involved in this no matter what—"
"The Mind Flayer doesn't give a shit about Hawkins," Ruby snaps. "He wants me and El. He's only here because of the lab. Hawkins isn't special. It's me and El that are. And El's lost her powers, so if I move away, he'll leave you alone. That is all I want."
"And yet, you don't want anything to do with me."
"I want you to be safe — to have a normal life, something I'm never going to experience," says Ruby. "And if we break up, you'll be safe. You can move on from this."
"So, the whole thing about burning buildings," says Steve. "What was that? Bullshit?"
"I did mean it!" she argues. "But things have changed — I hadn't been Flayed when I said that!" She lets out a breath. "I'm sorry, Steve. I love you, so much—"
"Don't say that," he snaps.
Ruby stiffens. "I'm doing this to protect you."
"What if a gate opens? What if the kids get into trouble?" says Steve. He gives her a dirty look. "Yeah, the demogorgon and demodogs and Mind Flayer wanted you, but you didn't start those things. Will got kidnapped, Dustin adopted that demodog — those things had nothing to do with you. All of those kids will find themselves in trouble again, and the demogorgon or the Mind Flayer... whatever monster it is, it will go after them — and you won't know anything's wrong, so they'll get hurt." He pauses, visibly angry. "You're being selfish."
Ruby narrows her eyes, angry. "This is the exact opposite of selfish."
"I'm not going to fight for you," he says, "if you're not going to fight for them."
Ruby can feel her heart breaking in her chest. Every piece, splintering her flesh, piercing her from the inside out. She wants to drown herself in her tears. But part of her brain tells her to be grateful, because this is what she wanted, isn't it? To break up with him? At least now, he wants nothing to do with her...
... it just fucking sucks.
"Then leave," says Ruby.
Steve goes quiet.
He looks around, like he doesn't want to go. Ruby, deep down, wishes it was her that had lost her powers. Then she'd have no choice but to give this all up. Maybe her and Steve could live a fairytale ending, moving out to California together. They could rent a place by the coast, they could go to the beach on the weekends, they could get married young and be the cool parents at their kids' school.
But she knows that wouldn't work. She remembers why they fell out last time, and the same thing's happening here. He refused to let the Upside Down go — and as a result, he lost her.
"It was nice knowing you, Brenner," he says.
"You too, Harrington," she says, softly.
He closes the door, and Ruby knows they're back to where they were, Halloween '84.
This is what you wanted, she reminds herself, picking up his roses, throwing them in the bin. Tears are rolling down her cheeks, her face feels already feels red. She can feel her insides hurting, her entire body trying to reject the heartbreak.
... This is what you wanted.
Why couldn't it have been her? Why couldn't she have lost her powers? They would've been happy then. She desperately longs for the reality where it was her, not El, and she slowly crouches on the floor, breaking into an awful sob. Please, please, please, let me go to that world, let me be with him—
And then, the telephone rings.
Ruby spins around. The landline is sitting on the floor still, silent. The ringing persists, and she follows it, down the hallway, towards her aunt's study. She never went into this room, since it was always a mess with Carrie's work plans. But, on the bookshelf, there's a red telephone, one labelled, IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES. Another phone, Ruby never knew about it.
But her brows furrow. What? Carrie had a special phone, for emergencies? What kind of emergencies? Why would she have a special phone, with no connection to the rest of the house...? What was she, the fucking president?
Ruby picks it up, and raises the phone to her ear.
On the line, she hears a familiar voice — one she thought she'd never hear again.
"Hello, Ruby..."
🖤
"I'M GOING TO MISS YOU."
Steve looks over at Nancy and Brenner, his two ex-girlfriends hugging each other goodbye. Foolishly, he agreed to help the Byers' move out of their house — OK, no, Dustin forced him to tag along, as if his presence would convince Brenner to stay, which would convince the others. It's proven to be unsuccessful. Brenner hasn't even spoken to him.
She has seemed rather... upbeat, all thing's considered. Steve keeps on wondering if this is because she's free of him, if this is what she acts like when she's single. She's walking around, excitedly telling Will about avocados and green tea — the staples, apparently, in any Californian's life. He just thinks it's weird. Her dad's dead, her aunt's dead, and yet, Brenner seems happy. Excited, even...
... Maybe she's just ready to leave Hawkins.
He should've listened, when she told him how much she hated this town. He always thought she was exaggerating. She's had a shitty life here, sure, but that was the lab's fault. That wasn't Hawkins doing that. And yeah, they've had those monsters over the years, but it's the lab. It's not Hawkins itself. He always thought she would come around to it, that she'd eventually learn to realise that Hawkins isn't so bad. After all, who can truly hate their hometown?
Brenner, apparently, Steve thinks, helping Jonathan Byers with a box of plates.
"Yeah, I don't know, either," says Jonathan.
Steve frowns. "What?"
"Why she's... OK," says Jonathan, nodding towards Brenner. "I thought she'd be a wreck."
Steve doesn't say anything for a minute. He loads the box into the moving van, following Jonathan back out. "Yeah, well," Steve says, shrugging his shoulders. "It's not my problem anymore."
Jonathan looks at him, confused.
Steve's wrestling with himself. Part of him wants to pull Brenner to the side, and tell her to give him an hour, he'll pack everything he needs and they'll drive to California together. But the rational part of him looks at Dustin, tearfully saying goodbye to Will, and knows he can't leave. Brenner's made the wrong choice, he doesn't have to do the same. Maybe Brenner thinks the Mind Flayer will come back, but why would she think that, and move away? Steve tries to think of whatever she's thinking, but he stops himself. It isn't his problem to handle anymore, she made that clear. And, besides. He isn't abandoning his friends.
Brenner keeps on walking away, anyway, everytime he's near. This time, as he steps off the moving van, Brenner quickly excuses herself from Nancy, walking back inside.
Steve lets out a sigh. He wishes things could be different.
Ruby looks back, knowing Harrington's bitching about her to Jonathan, and she sighs. Did he have to get so butt-hurt about this?
She thinks they had a pretty solid reason to break up. And yet, he's acting like she killed their first born child. Why's he even here, if he's going to be a asshole about it? Is it just to make her feel bad?
She tries to ignore all of this, and instead, focus on the situation itself. She's leaving. She's finally moving away from Hawkins, after years of dreaming about it. This should be a happy day for her. She shouldn't be feeling upset, because her ex-boyfriend is here...
... She always thought he'd come with her, though.
"Hey," says Ruby, finally finding El.
El's sat on the floor, holding a piece of paper. She looks up at Ruby, and smiles softly, her face wet with tears. Ruby frowns, kneeling beside her little sister.
"Are you...?"
El gives Ruby the letter. "It's from Dad."
Ruby refuses to look down, to read anything on the page. If she does, she'll burst into tears. And, aside from Harrington being an ass, she's feeling good. Ever since that phone call, Ruby feels hopeful.
"I'll read it later," says Ruby. "If I start crying, Harrington's gonna think it's over him, and hell's gonna freeze over before he thinks I'm sad about him."
El wipes a tear from her eye, and snorts. Ruby pulls her little sister into a hug.
"California's gonna be a fresh start, OK? It's gonna be good for us," she tells El. "We're gonna have vocal fries and love salads, and go to the beach all of the time — and I'll take you shopping before you start school, so you have some cute outfits... It'll be nice. It's just..." Ruby pauses for a second, hearing Harrington's voice down the hallway. "It's just going to be different. But sometimes, change is good. Butterflies were worms."
"Caterpillars," Jonathan says.
Ruby turns around, finding him standing in the doorframe.
"Caterpillars, worms, same thing," says Ruby, shrugging.
Jonathan shakes his head. "Mom's asking if you're ready to go."
El smiles weakly at the two of them. "I'm ready."
"Yeah," says Ruby, softly. She thinks about Harrington, and her heart feels heavy again. Her hopefulness for the future, for the destiny set out by that phone call, always disappears when she remembers the Steve Harrington-shaped hole in her heart, in her life.
As Ruby gets to her feet — El already having left to find Mike — she looks at Jonathan, hesitating. "Can, uh, you give me five minutes?" she asks.
Jonathan gives her a knowing nod. "He's in the kitchen, Rubes."
"... I don't know what you're talking about," says Ruby, with a frown.
He rolls his eyes. "I'll cover for you. Go."
With that, he walks down the hallway, back outside. Ruby stands, quiet, at the end of the hallway. She looks around at the empty house, and thinks back to the 1983, when they killed the demogorgon here. When she begged Harrington to leave, and he stayed; how he said she was the only person he'd run into a burning building for. Or, last year, when they argued in the bathroom, finally admitting they were in love with each other. For some strange reason, the most pivotal moments in her relationship with Steve all happened here.
So, she walks into the kitchen, cautious, in case Harrington wants to argue with her. But, instead, he's leaning against the counter, lost in thought.
"Hey," she says, quietly.
"Oh." Harrington looks up, surprised. "Hey."
"How, uh, are you?" she asks.
"I mean, aside from not having a girlfriend anymore," he says, but he cracks a smile, so she think he's being friendly. God. She hates this, the whole are-they-cool, are-they-friends-despite-being-exes. "I'm OK. I've got a job at the video store now."
Ruby smirks. "Wasn't feeling Scoops anymore?"
She finds this funny, because the mall burned down. Harrington, on the other hand, frowns at her. Is she being insensitive? He hated working there. Isn't he, like, a little bit glad he got out of it? Or... maybe she's so used to everything shitty in Hawkins that maybe she should have some respect to what happened. She supposes all of those deaths happened there. God. She's an awful person.
"Sorry," she says weakly. "Bad joke."
"No, it's fine. I know your humour is, uh..."
Ruby smiles softly. "Awful?"
Harrington smiles back. "I think it makes sense, you using humour to cope."
To cope? What does he mean? Does she look that upset? Like, yeah, her dad's dead, and her aunt, and her other ex — all because of her, mind you — but still! She isn't some walking, talking ball of sadness!
"I only got the video store job 'cause Robin's there, too—" Harrington changes the subject, to something else that sends Ruby's brain into overload. Of fucking course she is, Ruby thinks. Perfect little Robin in their cute little new job, now that he's finally single! "—but still. It's better than working above Russian spies."
"Yeah," says Ruby. She doesn't know what to say, feeling jealous about Steve and Robin — and then feeling stupid, because that has nothing to do with her anymore. They can date, if they so desired. Ruby's out of the way now.
But, instead, Ruby keeps on thinking about this house, about everything that's happened in it. She thinks about the two of them in the Byers' bathroom, screaming mid-argument that they loved each other. She thinks about 1983, how they hid in Jonathan's bedroom from the demogorgon. Ruby's hand was gripping onto Harrington's, mostly to keep him behind her. Everything changed that night, she knows that now. Nancy and Jonathan were there, sure, but Ruby remembers feeling like it was her and Steve against the world, like it was meant to be.
"Isn't it weird," says Ruby, glancing at him. "The place we said we loved each other in, is the same place we're saying goodbye?"
Harrington steps forwards. "You don't have to go."
Ruby thinks about the telephone call. "I do."
He goes quiet for a moment, before he sighs. "I had to try, one last time."
Slowly, they move closer. She tenderly wraps her arms around his chest, and he holds her in his arms. He kisses the top of her head, and she hugs him tighter.
"I wish things could've worked out," she tells him.
"Me too, Rubes," he says.
The two of them pull away from the other. Ruby looks across at her ex-boyfriend, at her old best friend. She smiles weakly.
"See you, Harrington," says Ruby.
"You too, Brenner."
Harrington stays in the kitchen as Ruby walks outside. She gives the kids hugs, and promises to let them visit at some point; as annoying as she used to find them, she desperately wishes that they keep their promise of talking to her still.
As she opens the car door, Dustin shouting goodbye, she sees Harrington step out onto the porch. Ruby smiles, sadly.
This is all for the best, she reminds herself, as they drive off from the Byers' house. Joyce is driving the moving van, so Jonathan's taking the Byers' family car. Ruby's car was wrecked after the Mind Flayer, meaning she's without one until she buys another in California. Because of this, she demanded shotgun, accepting a map in her lap whilst handling the most important matter: the music.
"We can't move to California and not listen to California-themed songs," says Ruby, rolling her eyes. "That's, like, a bad omen. We need to get ready for our vocal fries and penchants for salads now."
"But you've got a head start," says Jonathan. "You already say 'like' in every sentence."
Will, sitting in the back, laughs. He pulls a face, pretending to be Ruby. "That's, like, so not true!" he says, making his voice high-pitched.
"I miss when you were scared of me," says Ruby, and she turns up the volume for California Dreamin'. "Actually, no, I take that back — because now I'm your, like, big sister, you can be cool in high school..." She glances to the side. "... No offence, Jonathan."
"All taken," he mutters, but he's smiling, so Ruby thinks it's forgiven.
"I don't want to be cool," says Will.
Ruby laughs. "That's a great joke."
"Maybe... I just want to keep to myself," says Will.
Ruby turns around to look at him. She checks on El, too, who's been silent ever since they left Hawkins. She's still gripping the letter from their dad, which makes Ruby conflicted. On the one, she hates seeing her sister upset. On the other... At least her sister has that letter, as a final farewell to Dad. Ruby thinks El needed that.
"Well..." says Ruby, awkwardly, glancing at Will. She wants to make both El and Will feel better about leaving their friends. Ruby knows it's only her and Joyce that are looking forward to moving away. So, she smiles at Will. "At least the bullies won't get you. Not with me around."
Jonathan snorts. "She's right, you know."
Will looks unconvinced. "Really?"
"Ruby Brenner could make the devil cry," says Jonathan. "That's what we used to say."
Ruby moves back, facing forwards. "I made Munson cry once."
Jonathan lets out a bark of laughter. "Seriously?"
"Yeah, he was selling his—" Ruby stops herself, her eyes widening. Her and Jonathan exchange a glance, understanding what she was going to say. "—his special cakes and wouldn't give me a discount. Which is outrageous, right? Girls should never have to pay for... cake."
"That's not entrepreneurial, though," says Jonathan.
"Would've sold the virgin problem, though," Ruby retorts.
"Who's Munson?" says Will, intrigued.
Ruby glances at Jonathan, a devilish smirk appearing on her face.
"Just some guy," says Jonathan, before Ruby can call him a freak. "It doesn't really matter now. You're never gonna meet him—"
"And for a good reason," says Ruby. "He's, like, repeated senior year five times. He's a whole adult, but he hangs around kids still... Weirdo."
"Ruby," says Jonathan.
Ruby's unbothered. "Look, first step of not getting bullied is knowing who's a target."
They spend the rest of the car journey bickering about random things, making up stories about the random towns they pass through. They make a pit-stop in Nevada, and Ruby and Jonathan wonder if they could sneak the two kids into a Las Vegas casino. The two of them make a promise, to go back when they can sneak away from Joyce.
And, when they arrive in California, Ruby helps them move in, breathing in the fresh Californian air. Everything is starting to feel better already. Ruby helps sort out her little sister's bedroom, meticulously organising the drawers, when she realises the time.
"Oh, my agency's sent someone down," says Ruby, finding Joyce downstairs. "They're gonna help me get a car, but I'll be back soon."
Joyce smiles at her. "Sounds good, honey. We'll save you some pizza?"
"Yes, puh-lease!" Ruby grins. "Hawaiian, please."
She's decided, now that she's a California girl, that she's going to live how California girls do. So. Hawaiian pizza, healthy smoothies, jazzercise three times a week. She's gonna be rejuvenated, living out here in the constant warmth, miles and miles away from the cold, dark Upside Down.
But, part of being a California girl is Ruby's current arrangement, sorted during the secret phone call last week. She stands by the front door, watching a black car pull up outside, her heart hammering, both excited and terrified.
"See you soon!" she calls out, rushing outside before anyone can greet the man in the car — before they recognise him, she means. Ruby walks up to the car, noticing the blacked-out windows, and opens the front passenger door, getting in.
Despite everything, she feels positive. And she should! She's putting her life on hold, sure, but this is for the good of the world. This will avenge her dad, her aunt, Billy. This is something she needs to do. She may not have chosen this life, but she's stuck with it now — and she's fed up of running.
Martin Brenner turns to his granddaughter, looking pleased.
"Are you ready, Ruby?"
And she smiles, hopeful.
"Let's kill this thing, Grandpa."
