Spy AU 🏵

Haha modern-ish very angsty AU go brrrr

So in this AU, Sabre was once a spy-for-hire type of thing, then eventually became well-known and employed by a prestigious, lawful city to do his job by going to corrupt cities and getting information or getting rid of a target. Sabre soon became extremely popular and even more well-known in the circle of spies, basically being the world's #1. No one knew his true identity, not even his bosses, as he went under the code name 'Savior' whenever he was on a job or around his superiors. Being a spy is a very dangerous but rewarding job, so Sabre gained quite the fortune over his years.

On top of that, there exists species other than humans here. Sabre was an avian-type species, rare enough that they were never really given a proper name, and very powerful. Able to kind of shift their wings to completely seem as if they didn't have them, these species of avians could blend in perfectly with normal human society if there weren't so few of them. Sabre himself has white wings with a light grey fade on the wingtips, and feathers matching them are on his arms and even a few on his face.

Cities can be in different Realms, each having a portal to others for things like trade routes and visitors. These portals can easily be closed to keep out danger, or keep something in. Other than corrupted cities, all of them have good relations with each other. There are even multiple cities in each Realm.

Sabre was known as a very kind, outgoing person by his friends in his city. He was almost the storybook definition of a hero's personality; Selfless, cares for those close to him like family, willing to help complete strangers out on the street, and he even used his vast amount of money to help things like charities and such. He never really had a reason why, and it wasn't just to make himself look better. He was just happy living simply while outside of his job, and wanted to share what he had to people who weren't as lucky.

However, while on a few days off of his spy job and out with his friends, there was an attack in the city he lived in. Terrorists from a very prominent corrupt city that Sabre has struck before dropped bombs around town, killing a lot of people. Sabre tried to get to safety as everything was burning and falling apart, but a few of the terrorists found him as he climbed out of some rubble. They didn't know who he really was, just thought he was some civilian that was one of those rare avians.

These terrorists grabbed him, and beat him down for the heck of it. By the time officials and medical professionals found him, he was severely injured and almost bled out. Later in the hospital, it was found out that not only did the terrorists stab him multiple times, they shredded his wings to the point of amputation being needed... and they also gouged his eyes out. There was also severe mutilation in his throat, the terrorists seeming to have tried to kill him but failed. There was nothing doctors could do to repair the damage.

So, the ordeal left Sabre crippled, mute, and blind. Although considered lucky because he was still alive, everyone knew that this was considered a fate pretty much as bad as death. Sabre became a shut-in, only turning to the many complicated automations inside his house to guide him through his daily life. All of his friends had been killed in the bombings, so he had no one to be with him. No one had ever seen him exit his house again. And of course, he could no longer work as a spy. Since his bosses didn't know his identity, they assumed that their top spy had been killed in the explosions and moved on.

Years passed. Sabre learned how to navigate around his home while blind, even re-learning functions like using a lock, cooking (very carefully), and operating a computer. He kept himself entertained by listening to audiobooks and story videos on the internet or trying to craft things from DIY videos. He had never listened to the news, as he didn't want to hear anything about what's left of the city he once loved. He ordered everything online to keep his house stocked and such, living completely off the fortune he gained while working as a spy. However, he still missed everything he could do before the attack... flying around town, looking around at the early morning bustling through the streets, talking with people, going out and feeling the sunlight on his face... he missed it all.

About five years after the bombings, something happens. One night, as Sabre is just relaxing in his room, he hears something glass break. Thinking a glass just fell in the kitchen or something, Sabre gets up and makes his way to the kitchen to check it out. However, when he gets to the kitchen and feels around, he realizes nothing broke in there. Confused, he starts walking around his house to see what broke.

As Sabre is walking around the living room, he feels cold wind blowing inside the house. He's about to walk towards the source when suddenly someone grabs him from behind, covering his mouth with their hand so he can't scream, not like he could anyway. Before Sabre can react the intruder grabs his arm and sticks a syringe into his veins, injecting him with an extremely deadly poison. It quickly takes effect, and Sabre collapses to the ground as the intruder starts to grab a sharp knife from inside their coat.

Before the intruder can kill him though, someone else jumps in through the broken window and attacks the intruder, soon making them run off. As Sabre loses the strength to fight the poison and tastes blood filling his mouth, the last thing he hears is the new, mysterious person walking towards him as he lays on the ground.

Sabre wakes up in a room that resembles one of a hospital, connected to many unfamiliar machines. And suddenly... he can see. He looks around, mumbling to himself, and realizes he can speak. Before he panics, someone enters the room and calms him down. This person turns out to be Red Steve, soon followed by Orange Steve. They both explain to him that he's in a new Realm, the Steve Realm. Sabre had heard of this Realm before, but never went to it and never really researched much about it. He has met a few people from it before, though, in his travels.

Red and Orange also explain why he's here; In the time he stayed inside, the once lawful and prestigious city he served as a spy in his old job had turn corrupted itself, now being led by a dangerous individual that has escaped from the Steve Realm's maximum confinement prison, where only he was inside. This person has spread his corruption to other cities as well, making the other corrupt cities his underlings. The cities of the Steve Realm are one of the extremely few that are still free, although one city in the Realm is being controlled by a powerful henchman of the escaped prisoner.

The Steve Realm, desperately searching for help, found out that Sabre was still living completely untouched by the prisoner's corruption inside his house. As one of their sent agents was going to retrieve him though, it seemed that the escaped prisoner found out about Sabre as well, and sent one of his right hand men to kill him. The Steve Realm's agent, who turned out to be Orange, fought off the attacker and hurriedly brought Sabre to Red Steve. Red Steve was the one of very few of his kind known by the Realm, as the rest were though to be dead, and Red knew quite a lot about extreme reconstructive surgeries and artificial regeneration.

Red Steve had put the pieces of Sabre's missing eyes and voice box back together, regenerating them quite a bit in order for them to be fully functional, and almost exactly like the originals. As for his wings, he made it so they will regenerate slowly over time, as if Sabre were growing entirely new wings. Red also had saved Sabre from certain death, getting all of the poison out of his system, although Sabre was comatose for a few weeks due to the poison's damage.

Now, the reason why the Steve Realm wanted Sabre is because they knew of his skills. They knew he was a spy, in fact, they knew he was the world-recognized spy only known as 'Savior'. They needed him to help them fight against the new threat known as the Legion of the Dark, led by an escaped dangerous convict known well as Void Steve, who was now controlling Sabre's home city.

Sabre agrees, both grateful for his new friends' help and wanting to take down Void for ruining the city he once called home. He goes through many meetings with the Chromatic City Leaders (who are already all together, minus the Red City, as they're still hiding. The Yellow Leader comes to meetings through his underground refugees' tunnels until he gets his city back), and they equip him with many new tools and gadgets to aid him in his mission... along with his new partner.

Orange Steve. Codename: Blaze. He is to accompany Sabre along the way, helping him navigate around this unfamiliar Realm and have his back during tough battles. Orange is still the silly lil goof we know, using the abandoned spy headquarters known as 'Prism Hub' as a new headquarters for he and Sabre. They make a home there, bonding together throughout the story as they go through many perilous and sometimes odd missions together.

Now, Sabre has to rise from the dead as he climbs the ranks once more to #1 spy. His skills almost didn't rust at all, and he uses that to his advantage along with the knowledge he gained over his career. Going against foes, both old and new, Sabre rejoins the life of a spy with a new identity:

Codename: Phoenix.
