Cursed Butterflies AU 🏵
(CrystalRoseWrites claimed this AU, said they'll write the book soon)
I had an idea for an AU involving the Sky People.
What if, in another instance where Sabre was able to return to the RQ timeline, strange butterflies start appearing in the world. They are able to pick up and carry things, they seem more self-aware, and are much bigger than normal butterflies. The Steves don't know what they are, so everyone kind of panics at the sight of them, until Sabre explains that they're a type of insect from his world and that they're perfectly harmless. He does mention that they're not normal, though.
The butterflies keep clinging to Sabre, and he doesn't know why. He's confused by how they follow him everywhere, and even sometimes bring him things. One day, as he's talking with Time, one of the butterflies brings him a royal crest embroidered into a torn piece of fabric.
His royal crest.
Time asks why Sabre seems so mystified by the symbol, and Sabre explains, minus the part about the crest being his. It definitely shouldn't be in this world, and there's no way it could just be random coincidence. The crest has images of things that aren't in the Realm. Suddenly, the butterflies start trying to pull Sabre to somewhere in the forest. He and Time follow them, discovered an ancient ruined portal frame, emitting an iridescent glow. There's a computer with a keyboard nearby, its screen blank, except for a blinking bar in the top left. Sabre realizes that a typing program is open. Heading over to it, a butterfly hops onto the keyboard and miraculously starts typing. Sabre is taken aback by the phrase, one only his people know.
"Forgotten is the legend of the People of the Sky,"
Time is confused by the strange sentence, and hears Sabre whisper, "How do they know that...?" The butterfly types again, another phrase he recognizes.
"Their King cast down to an unfamiliar land, wingless and shattered,"
Time doesn't know what's going on, but sees Sabre does. "What is that?" He asks. The butterfly types again.
"Lost to the torrent of the recurring Storm."
Sabre, not taking his eyes off the screen, replies.
"It's the story of my people."
The butterflies suddenly turn to the two, and hold up drawings of the same royal crest embroidered on the fabric. Sabre now knows what they are. Staring them in the eyes, the butterfly types one more sentence.
"Do you recognize us now, Sabre?"
The butterflies are none other than the Sky People themselves.
This turns into an adventure of the Steves learning about the Sky People's legend and their forgotten King, and everyone trying to find a way to turn them back to normal (as they were cursed to be butterflies after their King was lost to "The Storm"), returning the favor for what Sabre had done for them. It's eventually found out that Sabre is the lost King (which nearly gives Professor Red a heart attack, for obvious reasons), and a little bit of chaos ensues before everything is back on track.
The Sky People are eventually turned to normal, and in the end, live in peace with the Steves.
