AU #140

Before anyone asks, this is unrelated to any kind of media- I had a cool idea for a name and only realized later that other stuff was named that too-

So what if Sabre was not human like he says he is, but rather a potentially very scary entity that has power over/gains power from people's dreams and just prefers to be chill about it?

It'd be really difficult to figure it out unless he told someone, maybe nobody would ever find out at all, but Sabre is a being known as a Dream Eater. These things are very feared among most people, but one hasn't been seen in an extremely long time (like, they were just stories told in the SL era kind of long), so people think that they either didn't exist at all or they went extinct somewhere along the line.

Here's the reasons why they're so scary:

- Dream Eaters gain power from people's dreams by visiting them, then consuming the energy that comes from them as the dreams play out, and that power can be infinitely stored. There is no cap to it, but at certain points there would be signs on said Dream Eater's physical body that they have a lot of power stored, such as parts of their bodies becoming similar to their forms when in dreams (basically parts of them start looking eldritch-y or ethereal looking).

- They don't sleep, instead they temporarily leave their physical forms and go looking for people that do sleep to visit their dreams. So no matter how far away you are from someone you suspect to be a Dream Eater, they don't need to be nearby to find you.

- They can influence what kind of dreams people have, so they can make people have constant nightmares if they wanted to. It doesn't change anything for them really, different kinds of dreams are basically just different flavors to them, but if they don't like someone then that person is never going to get real rest until one of them dies, or the grudge is settled.

- Once again, no power cap. They can just gather energy indefinitely. So if someone makes one angry, they don't know if that Dream Eater has the power to end half their population or not. And yes, they can have that kind of power.

- While they gather energy every night anyway, they do actually need that energy from dreams to survive. It's their replacement for food, as eating food doesn't actually do anything for them. So if there's a starving Dream Eater and a person accidentally stumbles upon them, they'll latch onto that person and basically put them in a coma until they're satisfied. If it goes on for too long, they could accidentally kill the person they've latched onto. They could just put people to sleep whenever they want, but it's usually only used in desperate situations.

- Dream Eaters can hide as any species they visit the dreams of. So anyone could secretly be one.

So yeah. Nobody wants to mess with them.

When Sabre arrives in the Realm, nobody's suspicious of him because there hasn't been any activity from Dream Eaters for a very long time. They all think he's just a normal dude. But in reality, they've just invited in an otherworldly creature that will haunt their dreams. Lucky for them, Sabre is an extremely chill one.

He's not really interested in being extremely powerful or anything, that just happens anyway. He just wants to hang out with his new friends and help them however he can. He doesn't really want to fight, but corrupt kings and evil overlords are in the way of going to his friend's village to mess with said friend's new powers, so he's gotta do something about that. He's kind of like Galaxy, in a way. An all-powerful giant goofball.

But he also doesn't want anyone to know he's a Dream Eater because he finds out pretty early on his afraid the Steves are of his kind. People are still paranoid about them, even after so long, worried that there will be a day where some decide to terrorize the Realm. So Sabre does whatever he can to make sure nobody finds out about what he is, but also uses his abilities to help them win the war against the Darkness, or whatever else they're fighting against. However, one look at his eyes would give him away, as he just has that much power stored.

Maybe Orange/Rainbow does find out about it and keeps his secret because they're friends, but maybe at one point there's too much evidence stacked against him for people to ignore. Or because of how oblivious everyone seems to be in RQ, it's never found out at all. There's equal opportunity for angst or character development either way, with Sabre either having to deal with being seen as something so terrifying that everyone fears him, or learning to be careful with the dreams of his unknowing friends, as he's never really been close to people before, and never had a second thought about his way of life because of it.

Orange: So... you don't have any abilities at all?

Sabre: (all of his abilities could ruin the lives of everyone at the drop of a hat)

Sabre: ...nah not really.

(Sabre and Galaxy get along great in this AU.)

Sabre and Galaxy: (casually talking about something like fishing or making stuff or something small like that)

(Camera pans out to reveal they're doing that while fighting hordes of Darkness without a care in the world. No effort shown. Everyone else is concerned/terrified in the bg.)

(If Rainbow did know about Sabre being a Dream Eater, Sabre would let him have lucid dreams whenever he visits him or always give him good ones whenever he goes to visit someone else's.)

Rainbow: (realizing he's dreaming) Oh, wait, I'm- Then where's-?

Sabre: (popping up behind him, looking very different because of his true form) Hiiii Rainbow!

Rainbow: Hsbsjsk- Stop scaring me like that!

Sabre: Haha whoops, sorry man.

Yellow Steve: (explaining everything about Nightmare) And people call him the Nightmare King...

Sabre: (visibly angry) I'll show him a nightmare-

(Bee man then never had anything other than nightmares for the shirt remainder of his life.)
