Backstory: Shade had a generally normal childhood, living in the middle of the woods with her family. She had a good relationship with her parents, and eventual sister. She loved them. She looked up to her father, wanting to be like him--a jack-of-all-trades. She learned a lot about a lot of different things as she strived to become like her father. Shade's father was jaded, though, in which he didn't show much positive emotion, and it seemed that he was dismissive of every little thing she did. Shade felt like she could never be good enough to make him proud. Although he wasn't super strict, his punishments were always severe. Though she didn't realize it at the time, both her parents were manipulative and controlling over what she did, but were also neglectful to her emotional needs. Her mother was always gaslighting her, and though Shade never knew about it, she was high the majority of the time. Being the "younger one," her little sister got away with most everything. Never being punished for her misbehavior, she was raised as an absolute brat. She would often throw tantrums, throwing things at Shade and hitting her when Shade did anything she didn't like. Shade's parents homeschooled her before she got to middle school due to too much "drama," unintentionally isolating her and keeping her from being able to make friends. She was also miles away from the nearest town, so she was usually cooped up into the house her father had built. When she got into her teenage years, a hole appeared on her back, leading to a void. She kept the spot as much of a secret as she could as she learned about it. She found that she could grow arms from the hole, store stuff inside the void to retrieve it later, then eventually learned that she could spread the void across her body to engulf and transform any part of it. She continued to experiment with what she could do with the void, using it to transform her entire body, in time. She couldn't stay in full form for long, finding that she would start to lose control of herself and her emotions. One night, she played with fire, not paying attention to how long she had stayed in her Void form. It took over her, unhinging her mind and making her think and act irrationally. That was the night her family found out about the Void. Subsequently, that was the night she lost complete control of the Void and killed her family. There was no part left of them, their entire beings eventually fading away as the Void took hold of them. She became distressed as her real mind processed what she had done, fleeing out into the woods in a panic. Eventually, she found herself lying down by a stream, the world around her still feeling unreal. She felt as if she were dreaming, her body and mind feeling fuzzy--it was as if she were having a sort of out-of-body experience. She prayed that she actually was dreaming, and that she would wake up back inside her house and that her parents and sister would be okay. Instead, she was met with the sight of a tall, faceless creature lurking in the woods. She stared at it as it watched her. She didn't think much of it, assuming that she was dreaming of it. She went to sleep, only to be hit with the reality of it all once she woke up in the morning, still in the middle of the woods. She didn't want to go back to her home, knowing that it would break her. Instead, she traveled out of the woods, deciding to take shelter in abandoned buildings whenever she needed to. As for food and drinks, she would often stop by gas stations, or even grocery stores, and snatch things off shelves using her Void hands. She continued to live that life for a few months--all the while, feeling as if she were always being followed or watched. She ignored those feelings, however, thinking it to be some side effect of what she had been through.
Others: Picked up the role of cleaner/repair-woman after she was lured to the Mansion, trying to keep it in one piece while allowing Slenderman time to himself - Has seen a lot of things while at the Mansion, so it's hard to unsettle her - Has urged the Pasta's to come to her if they ever need anything, even--especially--if it's just comfort - Shade has learned a lot about a lot of things, so she's the person everyone goes to to find out the answer for something. If she doesn't know something, she's absolutely going to spends days—if she has to—searching it up and learning about it. - There are times that Shade has paranoid thoughts that the Void on her back is growing and slowly enveloping her - There are times that her Void arms seem to have control over themselves, as they seem to have more awareness of the environment than Shade does. They'll reach out and catch things that have been tipped over that Shade doesn't physically see, or they'll block an incoming "sneak attack" from one of the others—sometimes even "taunting" or "scolding" them afterwards. It's become a mystery to the others—along with an "unsolved mystery" between some of them—whether the Void is its own sentient being, Shade just has a "sixth sense" of some sort, or that Shade somehow actually just notices it—or even if "someone else" is giving her insight to some things.
Though knowing that her parents and sister weren't the best, Shade always gives them the benefit of the doubt. Her sister always lashed out because their father never punished her unless it inconvenienced him, though would punish her severely to try to "put her in place," and was often confused about how she should act when she was younger. Despite her father seeming abusive, he was raised and treated even worse by his own parents, distorting his perception of treating his own children. He treated Shade and her sister how his parents treated him when they were "being nice," not wanting to be mean like his own parents. Shade's mother struggled with addiction due to her own childhood trauma's, and besides gaslighting them, was always very nice and lenient with them. It was years after she killed them that Shade realized how her parents and sisters treated her. She never saw any bad in them when she younger, being a bit naive to their behaviors. As her sister got older, her behavior also started to mellow out as she learned how Shade often felt in response. Her family was dysfunctional, but she loved them despite that.
