3rd Person P.O.V
Once things had calmed down and everyone was ready, the queens of SIX, accompanied by their kids and Christina, got into their cars and drove to the karaoke bar, with Maria promising to meet them there with the rest of the ladies-in-waiting. Christina was looking out of the window, part of her excited by what was going on, but mostly nervous.
"This will all be new to me. Actually going out and interacting with other people, after so long." Christina remarked softly. Being the daughter of the Phantom of the Opera had meant she'd led quite a lonely life, mostly because she knew society would scorn her for the horrid scarring on her face, which had been the result of a cruel trick played on her when she was eight years old, along with leaving her blind in her right eye, forcing her to wear a mask identical to her father's in order to hide the damage.
"It's ok. You'll find you'll fit right in really easily. We're just this really tight-knit family." Kitty reassured her, while playing with her dog, Magic. This earned a light smile from Christina.
"That's good to hear. And.....that's a lot of people." Christina remarked, noticing the crowd waiting outside what she presumed was the karaoke bar.
"I know, right! I love how everyone shows up for these things! We all love our karaoke." Liz spoke up, grabbing Christina by the hand and getting out of the car. Their arrival did not go unnoticed.
"Here they are." AJ said, seeing the queens walk over.
"And oh! A new girl. She looks pretty." Veronica said, earning a light smirk from Chandler.
"Fresh meat? Fun." Chandler gave a light chuckle.
"Hmm, she doesn't seem like the type of person you would want to cross. The mysterious people are always the most unpredictable." AJ remarked.
"Says the unpredictable and mysterious person." Chandler countered, earning a smirk from AJ.
"Exactly my point, my demon queen." AJ couldn't help but tease her wife for that one.
"Hi guys! Ready to get our karaoke one?" Liz asked as she came over with Christina.
"It's gonna be exciting, that's for certain. I managed to convince Heather to sing with me tonight." AJ answered, sending yet another smirk at Chandler.
"We're not gonna say how you talked me into it, but you did." Chandler told her. In truth, she could not resist AJ's puppy-dog eyes, which were extremely lethal despite her being seventeen.
"Love you too, Heather." AJ sing-songed, before everyone headed inside. Immediately, they were greeted by Selena Hamilton, a close friend of theirs who worked at the karaoke bar, whose most notable feature was that her dark brown hair was covered in multiple coloured streaks, starting with red streaks at the front, then orange, yellow, green, blue, and finishing at purple at the back of her head. This was due to the fact Selena was gay, and had dyed her hair to represent that. Selena was also currently dating Maggie, who was Anne Boleyn's former lady-in-waiting, and the guitar player of the SIX band.
"Nope. Your group definitely gets bigger every time I see you guys." Selena joked.
"Well, Selena, hope adding just one more girl won't make it too hard to serve us. Christina here won't be too much trouble." Liz remarked with a light chuckle. Selena led the group to their usual tables.
"Not at all. Today has actually been quite quiet, to be perfectly honest. So it's been fairly slow." Selena said, earning a smirk from Maggie, who had twirled a chair around and sat in it backwards.
"Well, we're gonna change that, aren't we?" Maggie playfully teased her girlfriend.
"I gathered that when I saw you walk in. I look forward to seeing which members of your group will be singing tonight." Selena said.
"My cousin, here, will. Of whom still hasn't told me what song she'll be performing with her wife tonight." Courtney Stapleton spoke up, wrapping an arm around AJ and playfully ruffling her hair. AJ and Courtney S were cousins via their respective mothers, who had been twin sisters, and the twin gene had been passed on to the two, making them look identical to each other. The only way to tell them apart was their outfits and their differing accents, as Courtney S had a British accent, whereas AJ had an American one.
"You'll find out, dear cousin. Come on, Heather." AJ said, pushing her cousin off, before walking up to the stage.
"I'm coming, I'm coming." Chandler said, closing her compact mirror and pocketing it before following AJ, who laughed lightly and passed one of the microphones to the blonde, before requesting the song she wanted. Moments later, the opening to The Phantom Of The Opera from Phantom of the Opera began to play, with AJ singing Christine Daae's part at the right time.
"Oh my Madonna! Agh! It's Phantom! It's Phantom!" Damian whisper-shouted in excitement as he watched the two perform.
"Dang, and Christine is supposed to be one of the hardest female theatrical roles, vocal-wise." Janis remarked.
"You are correct. I am certain it's like an E6 or something that's the highest note in this song? I'm curious to see how AJ does this." Grace remarked, leaning into Mary as she watched. Mary gave a light chuckle and wrapped an arm around Grace as she also watched, just as AJ reached the vocalising section in the song, causing Courtney S to shush the rest of the group. Chandler seemed to be watching in both fascination and fear as AJ's vocalising gradually became higher each time.
"Wait, is she gonna do it? She's not faltering at all." A wide-eyed Veronica questioned. Her answer came a few moments later when AJ effortlessly hit the final high note in the song, which earned wide eyes from the rest of the group, but also a happy squeal of excitement from Damian, who seemed to be having the time of his life.
"Holy shit...." Chandler muttered quietly, having not been expecting this at all when she had agreed to sing the song with AJ.
"Damn. Mind. Blown! Courtney, your cousin is hella talented!" Vicki exclaimed, turning to look at her friend, who was in equal shock to the rest of the group.
"What the hell? Where has that talent been hiding? I can only reach that note on good days." Courtney S said, running a hand through her curly hair.
"Well, your cousin is the epitome of mystery." Vicki pointed out, putting an arm around her friend.
"True, I can't argue with that. Neither can Heather." Courtney S remarked, motioning to a shocked and dumbfounded Chandler, who was being led offstage by AJ.
"I.... AJ, what? Fuck me gently with a chainsaw." Chandler was unable to form a coherent sentence, other than her catchphrase, due to her shock.
"I surprised you, didn't I?" AJ questioned, placing a light kiss to Chandler's cheek, which caused the blonde to blush.
"No... I mean, yeah! What the fuck, AJ? When I got to learn about your skills, you never told me opera singing was a thing." Chandler exclaimed.
"Well, I knew I had a fifty-fifty chance of hitting the note. So, I didn't think about it. I just went for it." AJ said as they reached the others.
"Ah! You made it look so easy though! Good job, cuz. I'll find you an agent. You can be the next Christine Daae on the West End." Courtney S joked, earning a laugh from the younger girl.
"Thanks, Court. Although I suspect you could hit that note if you wanted to. After all, it's only a one note higher than the whistle-note in Heart of Stone." AJ countered.
"Oh yeah, classical voice training, definitely could. Just, y'know, the process from sounding like a dying cat to actually Sierra Boggess-ing it is a tough one. But I see you've perfected it well, AJ." Courtney S said, patting her cousin on the back as the younger girl sat down again.
"Dang, I was gonna perform tonight, but do I really want to follow that performance?" Charissa questioned, running a hand through her blonde hair.
"Yeah! You'll do great! You always do." Sophie immediately piped up. Chandler also turned to face Charissa.
"Hell yes! Go slay that stage!" Chandler said, pointing to the stage.
"Okay, I'm going." Charissa raised her hands in mock surrender, before going up to the stage and requesting her chosen song, which turned out to be Someone Gets Hurt from Mean Girls.
"What? I hear queen bee music. Is someone singing a Regina song?" Regina George, leader of the Plastics, questioned curiously when she recognised the song.
"Yep, Charissa is." Janis answered, gesturing to where Charissa was performing.
"Oh! Well, let's see how she does this then." Regina remarked, putting her phone down and turning to watch as Charissa sent a flirty wink in Sophie's direction, causing the small blonde to blush heavily.
"G-go Charissa! Whoo! That's my girlfriend!" Sophie tried in vain to hide her blush by taking a sip of her drink.
"Ha! And she said she couldn't follow our act. Pfft, a Heather can do anything. Charissa's one hot snatch." Chandler remarked, earning a laugh from Jess.
"Charissa can often surprise you when you least expect it." Jess remarked.
"That's been noted a long, long time ago. She played me, and not many people can nail both a Veronica and a Heather." Veronica spoke up.
"And yet, Charissa did it perfectly." Jess countered, wrapping an arm around Barrett.
"Well, perfectly for both of them, yeah. But, y'know, I'd fix things up a bit. Since, well, I was the OG Veronica in the show, but whatever." Barrett remarked, leaning into Jess's embrace.
"Oh, shush you." Jess said with a light smirk, before kissing Barrett. Meanwhile, Nadia Marquez ran into the bar while everyone was watching Charissa singing, when her high-heeled shoe fell off.
"Oh, for Pete's sake." Nadia muttered under her breath, quickly fixing her shoe. Mae saw her, and quietly slipped out of her seat, going over to join Nadia.
"Hey, I'm so sorry about this. My mum can be extremely pushy sometimes." Mae said.
"Oh no, it's fine! It's totally fine. I'm just.....yeah. Sorry I'm late. I just wasn't expecting you to want to hang out so soon." Nadia said, a little sheepishly.
"Truthfully, neither was I. But my mother decided to be nosy and found out I was texting you. Though she still doesn't know it's you that I've been seeing." Mae said.
"She doesn't? Is she gonna be fine with it? How is she? Do you think she'll like me?" Nadia questioned, starting to panic a little.
"Nadia, you'll be fine. Yes, my family can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but they're good people. Although Liz can be a bit mental sometimes." Mae reassured her.
"Liz is your sister, right? Yeah, from what you've texted me about her, she seems like quite the....character. Not what I had in mind for Queen Elizabeth I." Nadia admitted
"That's one way to describe Liz, I suppose. She takes after Anne in more ways than one. The pair of them are extremely chaotic since being reborn. I have no idea how Mum manages to keep Anne under control." Mae said, earning a giggle from Nadia.
"Well, large brain, immense intelligence, some sort of method should be created. Or the two just love each other very much. That I can understand." Nadia said, running a hand through her hair.
"Well, you can't keep them away from each other for very long. Anyway, are you ready?" Mae asked.
"I don't know, am I ready? Wait, I should be answering that. It's not every day you get to meet THE Catherine Parr. So....uh, lead the way, Mae!" Nadia answered, earning a light chuckle from Mae, who took Nadia by the hand and led her over to the table, before tapping her mother on the shoulder.
"Yes? Oh, Mae! Wait....when did you leave your seat? I never noticed you left." Cathy said.
"You were all busy watching Charissa. Besides, there's someone I'd like you to meet. Mum, you remember Nadia, don't you?" Mae asked. Nadia tightened her grip on Mae's hand when Cathy looked over at her.
"Oh, yes! She was the one opposing lawyer of yours that wasn't the abominable Christian Finn, was it?" Cathy asked.
"Yes. But it turns out she works at the law firm where I'm currently doing my internship. And we've gotten to know each other better since the trial." Mae answered.
"Your daughter is an amazing co-worker and general person to work with. I've been in the field longer than she has, but she ends up teaching me things." Nadia said, giving a light chuckle.
"That's fantastic to hear." Cathy said with a smile.
"Nadia also loves your books." Mae told her mother, trying to hide the fact she was blushing from Nadia's words.
"Oh, really?" Cathy questioned.
"Yes! Yes, I do. I'm a huge fan. Like, I'm hyperventilating in your presence right now. It blew my mind to find out this kickass lawyer's mum was Catherine Parr." Nadia answered, earning a snicker from Mae.
"The clue is in my last name. Mae Parr." Mae said.
"Well, whatever, that's not everyone's first instinct, is it? It's not easy to set you a"Parr"t from." Nadia joked, causing Mae to groan at the bad pun and slap Nadia on the arm.
"Don't start. I have to put up with enough of that at home. I blame Anne for starting the bad puns." Mae complained, earning a laugh from her mother.
"Funny, love. You do know she pesters me more with those puns that she does you? Good for me though, Nadia can be Anne's replacement in your case, Mae." Cathy was having a little too much fun teasing her daughter.
"Great. My future stepmother and my girlfriend are probably going to end up teaming up on me." Mae muttered.
"Exactly! Your future stepmother and your girlfriend. Wait..... Girlfriend?" Cathy questioned in confusion. Now it was Mae's turn to laugh at teasing her mother.
"You were pestering me about it earlier." Mae reminded her mother, putting an arm around Nadia.
"Wait, Nadia's that mystery person you were texting?" A wide-eyed Cathy questioned.
"Yep." Mae answered, causing Nadia to blush.
"Yeah, I kinda fell for Mae after we first met. It's her fault, really. If only she weren't so smart and pretty." Nadia teased, causing Cathy to laugh a little.
"Hey! Not my fault those two traits come with being a Parr." Mae said, unsure whether to be annoyed or not.
"Yeah, but you don't have to hog up all the good traits, Miss Parr. At least I can reach things off high shelves for you." Nadia teased, earning her another glare from Mae, who despite being an inch or so taller than her mother, was still a few inches shorter than Nadia.
"Maybe, but I make lethal spiked headbands look good." Mae countered. She had taken to wearing a headband similar to the one her mother wore while performing in SIX, except Mae wore hers on a daily basis, her slightly wavy hair quite the contrast to her mother's curly hair.
"Luckily, you didn't have to use it in your last trial, love." Cathy pointed out.
"Yeah, the "point" is not to fight in them, but to look hot in them." Nadia said with a snicker.
"They still came in useful the day I was Hannah's lawyer." Mae countered. That was when Liz decided to jump into the conversation.
"Oh, are we talking about that now? Yeah, Mae was so badass with her spiky headband. She stabbed crazy bench Susan in the arm, with her strength paired with her wit." Liza said, punching the air for emphasis.
"Liz, it was self-defence, not on purpose." Mae pointed out. Which was true, she had simply used the first thing within reach in an attempt to defend herself during a court trial when the person being convicted had gone mad and attacked her.
"I know, but it was still cool. Oh, new person." Liz said when she saw Nadia.
"Liz, this is Nadia. You may remember her?" Mae questioned, causing Liz to look over at Nadia, trying to see if she could recognise her.
"Oh hey, she's the lawyer girl you went up against for mean Christine's trial, right?" Liz asked, referring to Amber and Selena's nasty older sister, who had recently been sent to prison on numerous charges.
"Yes, that's right. I invited her to come along tonight." Mae answered.
"Aww, how charming. So she's the one you've been texting non-stop last night and two nights before." Liz said.
"Perhaps." Mae had a mischievous smirk on her face.
"Well, I was anxious to see who you were seeing, Mae, but I couldn't ever be more pleased at the result. I hope she knows I'll be asking her questions later." Liz said.
"Yes, I did warn her about that." Mae told her, before turning her attention back to the stage just as Charissa sang the final lines of Someone Gets Hurts. The loudest cheer, unsurprisingly, came from Sophie.
"Whoo! Go Rissa! I love you!" Sophie was trying and failing to hide her blush as Charissa walked back to rejoin the group.
"Love you too, Soph." Charissa said, before she was tackled in a hug by Sophie.
"That was well done. My respect for you has increased, Charissa, and I rarely ever give people my respect." Regina said.
"Thank you." Charissa said from where she was still being hugged by Sophie.
"Me and Caddy next!" Janis piped up, which surprised a lot of people.
"Oh, well that came out of nowhere." Regina remarked as she watched Janis and Cady head up to the stage, before the opening bars of Apex Predator from Mean Girls began to play.
"This sounds like something that'll be badass." Veronica noted, liking the melody as Janis began singing.
"Apex Predator. One of my favourite duets in Mean Girls." Jess said.
"Mhm, and whenever we duet together, you always insist on Cady's role." Barrett said.
"Well, it was only fair that you got to sing the part you originated on Broadway." Jess told her, earning her a playful nudge from Barrett.
"Or that you just like it when I play a mean Janis." Barrett teased the redhead
"Like how you used to like it back when I played Heather Chandler." Jess countered, just as Cady began to sing her part.
"Exactly." Barrett agreed, proceeding to clap at Cady's smooth entrance into the song, earning a smirk from Jess. Meanwhile, Damian was just having the time of his life watching his two best friends singing together onstage.
"Ooh, that harmony though. Great Oprah Winfrey, that belt! Ohmigod, my gals are slaying!" Damian cheered happily as Janis and Cady finished singing and left the stage to rejoin the others.
"Yay! Good job, you two!" Gretchen said.
"Thanks Gretchen. Wow, that was exhilarating." Cady remarked, adrenaline still rushing through her.
"For your timidity when we first met, that's one hell of a voice. Damn, sing like that more often." Duke told Cady, who gave a soft chuckle.
"Maybe I will." Cady said, earning a smile from Duke.
"So, will we just be listening to the Mean Girls soundtrack all night? Cuz I'd rather not get drunk to someone singing about lions and louboutins." Chandler spoke up, taking a sip of her drink. Unnoticed to the group, Christina had slipped out of her seat and gone up onstage, before the music started, and she began to sing Music Of The Night from Phantom of the Opera. This caused Liz to look around, as she hadn't realised Christina had left the table, before seeing her on the stage.
"Wow..." Liz said, in awe of Christina's voice.
"It seems her father taught her well." Jane noted, a soft smile appearing on her face.
"I would have to agree. For a small girl, she has a grand angelic voice with sort of an eerie tone. It's strangely comforting." Cathy said.
"Angelic like her mother, yet eerie like her father." Anne summarised.
"This combination might be the closest thing we'll ever have to truly knowing her parents." Aragon spoke, having teared up a little while listening to Christina singing.
"Perhaps we should take Christina to see Phantom of the Opera, so then we can find out how accurately her parents' story is portrayed?" Maria suggested, wrapping an arm around Aragon.
"That's a brilliant idea! And also a benefit for us to better visualise her story." Aragon agreed.
"I shall look into getting us tickets then." Maria decided, which earned her a kiss on the cheek from Aragon, who was also smiling as Christina hit a beautiful high note in the song.
"Gracias, mi amore. In the meantime, I'll try and fail to hold in my tears to the voice of the Angel of Music." Aragon said.
"De nada, Catalina. And Christina truly is an Angel of Music." Maria agreed. Aragon gave a light chuckle, resting her head on Maria's shoulder as she continued to listen to Christina singing. Meanwhile, the Ohio crew was having their own quiet conversation.
"That's an interesting mask that she wears." Hannah noted, watching Christina. Chandler nodded in agreement, before nudging AJ.
"Don't you have one of those masks? Like, the Phantom of the Opera one?" Chandler asked AJ, who nodded
"Yeah. It does look like the mask worn by the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera." AJ answered.
"I'd say she wore it just for this performance, but she has been wearing it the whole night. Is it a style thing or....." Veronica questioned.
"I have no idea. But you're right. She has been wearing it the whole night." AJ noted.
"Ugh, sounds like a mystery. I already get enough of that on the daily. Let's just ask or something after this." Chandler said.
"It might be a sensitive subject for her, so we will need to be careful." AJ reprimanded the blonde. Meanwhile, Christina finished the song on a beautiful high note, before stepping offstage and retaking her seat beside Aragon, who had been wiping tears before pulling the teenager into a gentle hug.
"Beautiful, mi cariño, very beautiful." Aragon said, which earned a smile from Christina.
"Gracias, Mama." Christina responded, knowing this would surprise Aragon. But she was comfortable around her, which was essential if Aragon was going to adopt her. Aragon could feel herself tearing up again at what Christina called her.
"Did you just say...." Aragon asked, surprised but also happy.
"I did. I hope that's okay." Christina answered, slightly worried she may have gone a little too far. But her worry eased when she saw Aragon smile.
"Of course it is." Aragon answered, causing relief to flood through Christina, who was glad to finally have a maternal figure in her life once more after the death of her mother nine years prior.
This turned out to be a lot longer than I thought it would. Part 2 coming soon!
