Chapter 27 - Love Again?
It was a peaceful Sunday late morning, the Castle filled with screams of children and birds chirping melodies.
Byul stood in outside where the large outdoor pool is, watching Victor swam around, splashing water here and there.
She was keeping him on close watch. She wasn't going to risk anything happening again like years back.
Just then a servant came running to her, panic written over her face.
"What is it?" Byul asked.
The servant held her head down and spoke, "Vanessa is crying for you. She won't stop crying even when one of us holds her."
"It's alright. Can you watch over Victor for me? Call me if anything happens." She entrusted Victor into the servant's care as she left to tend to Vanessa.
"Oh my poor little girl crying for me... All these new people scaring you, is it? Aigoo..." She gently carried the baby girl in her arms, whose face was tear-stained. The baby girl stared up at her mother with those doe eyes of hers as she snuggled close.
"Aww... Are you hungry?" A servant handed the bottle of milk over to Byul and she started feeding her.
"You all can leave. Thank you." She then turned back to coo at her beautiful daughter.
Just as Vanessa finished the milk till the last drop, a servant came knocking and entering the room in a haste.
"V-Victor..." Byul immediately panicked, events from years back flooding into her mind. She got up, handed Vanessa over and ran towards the outdoor pool as fast as her legs could carry her.
What she saw made her heart drop. It was the same situation, one she dreaded so much. The servant was trying to use a wooden stick to get him to grab but Victor wasn't willing to. He continued flailing his arms.
"Victor!!!" Byul quickly jumped without realising the depth of the water. She struggled to reach the surface. When she did, she held on to her boy's body and tried to swim, but the boy's flailing limbs were making it impossible.
"Byul-ah!" Vernon's voice could be heard. He ran to the edge and without hesitations he dipped himself into the cold deep water and fervently swam to get the both of them to safety.
"What happened?" Vernon asked as he first helped Victor up. The poor boy kept coughing. He then held Byul up by the waist, making her blush as she felt tingles throughout her body.
"You were swimming just fine weren't you?" Byul looked at her son.
"I was, until a cramp came up on my leg and I kind of panicked... Sorry mom..." He had his head down as he apologised.
"Don't scare me like that alright? Next time, be calm and try to get to the edge, isn't that what the swimming instructor taught you?" Byul calmly explained as she wiped the water from his face.
"I think we all need to freshen up. I'll check on your leg later alright? Don't want you to catch a cold." Vernon affectionately caressed his boy's cheek and got out of the water.
After changing their clothes, Vernon went to Byul's room where the three decided to reside in.
Vernon has been dying to ask one thing and he hoped he would be able to.
He knocked on their door and waited outside patiently. Byul opened the door and let him in.
Victor had such huge smiles on his face every time he saw his father. It made Vernon's heart do flips as he ruffled his hair.
"How's your leg?" He gave a huge smile in return.
"It's better, but it still hurts a little." Victor gave a smile that reminded Vernon of his younger self.
"I'm sure you'll get better in no time." Vernon then turned to Byul, who was awkwardly standing beside the bed. He slowly approached her, stopping right in front of her.
"Can we... talk in private?" His voice was soft and low, sending shivers down her spine as she jumped a little. Nodding her head, she turned to leave the room. Vernon took that as a cue to follow and he was led to a balcony.
The breeze was blowing gently, but strong enough to dishevel their hair. They stood in a moment of silence, neither comfortable nor awkward.
It was only a minute later when Vernon decided he couldn't hold back the words that he was desperately trying to tell her and blurted it out.
"Is it... Is it possible for us to start over again?" Byul immediately turned her head to look at him. "I know our initial start was not exactly proper, then we lost one child, with your escape following that tragic event." Byul turned back to look out at the magnificent view from the balcony as she was reminded of her lost child.
"We were never in the same world, Vernon." Her broken voice was carried by the wind, to the ears of the country's Prince whose heart then shattered.
"Byul-" Vernon tried to speak again but was cut off by her. "Our worlds just overlapped in that moment. Things happened and we were back in our respective worlds. Now it's just clashing again for a short period of time."
Vernon's heart was now not just shattered, but broken down further into tiny pieces like fine specks of dust.
"I'll leave now." Byul turned towards the door but before she could turn the doorknob, Vernon's question made her stop in her tracks.
"Do you still love me?"
She stood there in silence, hand gripping the doorknob till her knuckles turned white. She could feel Vernon's piercing gaze as she shut her eyes tightly, tears threatening to fall.
Vernon looked at her with anticipation, hoping for the answer he would hear. The way she acts around him, the awkwardness when they meet in the hallways—he was sure of it.
The sun had peeked out from the clouds, their faces slowly glowing from the sun rays that shone upon them.
"I... I do."
