Chapter 11
"Heave!" I shouted.
"Ho!" The men of the crew replied.
Waves crashed along the shores of England. We decided to take the ship a bit farther into sea so we wouldn't ruin the sides and the docks if we were flipped over. But we've never seen this large of a fuckin' storm. It just came outta nowhere!
Right now, the sails were flying everywhere, and I was trying to get the crew to pull on the ropes to try and stabilized the damn things. We had to be careful though. The wooden bottom of the sail would sometimes sway side to side and try to knock the crew overboard. Thankfully it hasn't happened yet.
"What are ye?!" I shouted at the men as they couldn't pull the sails up.
"Pirates!" They shouted with glory.
"Then by God, SHOW ME THAT YE ARE!"
The lads all seemed like they gained some kind of muscle as the sails curled up tight. I smirked as I climbed up the ladder to the Hawkeyes post. I went as fast as I could to try and give the lads a break. When I reached there, I took the ropes in the little area and tied it around the sail three times: one in the middle and two on the outside.
Ye are probably wonderin' where the hell me mother and father went. They were helping to bail out water from the bottom quarters of the ship. The ship hit the corals underneath it, and those beauties tore an entire part of the damn thing off. It wasn't massive, but the amount of water we got in there is insane.
I then took one of the spare ropes and swung down onto the deck. Just as I did so, I heard someone calling me name.
"Coora!" Me father said as he appeared from the hatch. "Get to the wheel! Steer this thing back to the shores! It's gettin' bad down here!"
I nodded me head and I ran for the Cap'ain's wheel. I pulled the lever to allow the thing to move, and I squinted to try and see where the hell land was. The storm's wind must've set us off. Damn it!
I then saw something light up in the fogginess. I studied it more until I realized what it was. It wasn't lights from a city.
It was lightning reflecting off a giant wave.
"MONSTER WAVE!" I yelled. "HIT THE DECK!"
All the crew on the deck then either ducked in one of the corners that covered them, or they went into the nearest, windowless room. Me? I'm not going to hide. There's gotta be some maniac who's gonna control this fuckin' ship. And that maniac is me.
"COORA!" Me father then yelled. "Faigh a-mach thairis air an seo mus tha thu a sguabadh air falbh!" Get down before ye get swept away!
"And let ye old arse take over?" I shouted. "Not a chance, Father! Now go!"
He gave me a shocked expression.
"GO!" I repeated but with more force.
He quickly nodded and I could've sworn I saw some worry on his face as he went back down. I took a deep breath, tightened me bandanna over me head, and faced the wave. You and me, wave... ye haven't seen nothin' from me.
I turned the boat so it could face the direction of the wind. It was one of the things about boating ye learn. Facing the wind will give you more visibility in front of ye. The rain goes in that direction, and it'll be easier to look through rain going behind ye instead of in yer face.
The wave was gettin' closer. There was no way I was gonna outrun this damn thing to get to shore, but I always come prepared. And I've been willin' to try this trick out for years. What was it? Let me explain the damn story!
I put the ship at a 45 degree angle from the wave, and I made sure that it was able to glide on the waters.
"What are ye doin', Lass?!" A lad yelled to me. "Are ye tryin' to kill us?!"
"I've got a plan, damn it!" I yelled back. "Just trust me!"
Our ship wasn't as big as you'd think. It's smaller than most ships, and it sure as hell can ride on the waves. Both literally and figuratively. I took another deep breath in as the wave came in closer. I calculated the amount of time it would take for this thing to get to me.
Ten... nine... eight...
"Want to learn something about ships?" Senair Henry asked me.
"What?" I asked. "Is it something cool?!"
"Sure is. I remember this one time when I was in an expedition for my the king. There was a wave ten times the size of our ship that was coming straight for us!"
Seven... six... five...
"Oh no!" I said, shocked. "Was it scary?"
"It was very scary," he replied. "I never thought that I'd live through it. But you want to know what I did?"
"What?"
Four... three... two...
"I took the wheel, gripped it with all my might, and faced it towards the wave at a 45 degree angle."
"Why so precise?"
"Because of what I'm about to say... I glided on the wave. As if I were some bird flying over it."
One...
I closed me eyes, gripped the wheel with all me might, as I braced for impact. However, I didn't feel anything strange. In fact, it felt as if the rain and chaos had stopped. I opened me eyes and gaped at what I was looking at.
I was inside the fucking wave! Some of the men on the deck looked up in shock as well. I stared in awe at the beauty. It looked like the crystals in me cove. It reflected off the corals underneath it all. It went around me like a glass dome. It let in some of the light of the lightning from outside, and it was just... so pretty.
I then got to me senses as I realized that it was starting to close from behind me. I kept going through the wave, feeling invincible as I made me way to the end of the wave.
When we got out of it, the crashed uplifted the ship from behind slightly. I quickly adjusted the lever to adjust the ship more in the back, and everything was fine. I let out a shaky breath as I just comprehended what the hell I just did. I went through a wave. A wave! I laughed. I can't believed I did that. I did the unthinkable. I did exactly what Senair did!
I then realized that the storm had died down. It was more of light sprinkling than anything, and the fog had gone away, too. I saw the men get up and out of their little hiding places as I steered towards England's docks. Never in my life have I been so happy seeing that damned place.
"Coora..." Mother then said, walking up to me. "What... did you do?"
"Remember that story of Senair Henry's expedition?" I asked, lookin' to her.
"Yes."
"I just went through a wave, Mother. Just like he did!"
Mother gaped at me, and that soon turned into a smile of joy. She gave me a thousand kisses before I had to tell her to stop so I could go I shore. When she was done, I felt someone pat me on me back. Lookin' over me shoulder, I realized it was Father.
"I have never been more proud of me Lassie than now," he said, smiling.
He... smiled?
I smiled back as I steered the boat to the docks. When we got there, a bunch of men were standing with telescopes. When they saw us, they just looked astonished. I'm pretty sure they saw me trick.
"By God..." one of them said as I stopped the ship. "Were you all out there in that retched storm?"
"Aye!" Father said, proudly. "We were. And we wouldn't have made it without this little captain."
I sheepishly looked over the side and smiled. I then got a closer look at the men and saw the king with Dylan next to him. The king looked shocked, terrified even. What was his problem? Did he now see me as a threat to England for saving me whole crew? Wouldn't be shocked if we were banned from here the next day.
However, Dylan was who I was most concerned with. He looked at the entire ship, somewhat worn out by the waves and crashes until he layed his eyes on me. They glowed with this emotion that I couldn't quite see properly. I slightly blushed when he saw me, but I stood on the top of the ship's fencing and smirked.
He just smirked back. However, the moment was short lived when the king grabbed Dylan by his arm and dragged him away, his soldiers following beside him. I heard the king whisper something to one of the guards, and it made me worry.
Because I fear that it has something to do with me family.
