Chapter 31
The atmosphere around the table was tense, silence being the only sound to resonate through the room. We all ate in absolute silence, an empty chair to the right of me. Sans hadn't left his study since we got back, not even to grab a bite to eat or a cigar to smoke. The packet lay full on the counter, not a tear in the cardboard. I placed my fork down on the plate, my heavy heart weighing me down and masking my hunger. Papyrus looked worryingly at me, a slight frown on those normally cheerful bony features. He was very perceptive to notice my discomfort, especially after keeping his sockets on Lil' Pup for most of the time.
" Big Pup? What's eatin' you? " I smiled softly, seeing a opening for a joke. Perhaps I could lighten the mood and maybe bring laughter to this somber and gloomy place.
" Not the food that's for sure " I watched gleefully as the tall skeleton sighed heavily, Lil' Pup giggling at my attempts at humor. I normally wasn't good at this sort of thing, my jokes as stale as two month old bread. Perhaps Sans had rubbed off on me. Silence was broken soon after, a chain of laughter erupting around the room and throughout the whole house. Gleeful sounds bounced around each room like a playful child, proving that sadness was never present in this home for long periods of time. Another sound mixes with the laughter, that of a door shutting gently. I watched from my spot at the table as Sans makes his way into the kitchen without a sound, plating himself some spaghetti and sitting with us. The laughter soon died, able to sense Sans' mood a mile away. He seemed distressed, guilt pouring over me as I watched the short skeleton eat slowly, almost like he was afraid of the food or perhaps something else.Sans was never a man of few words. What had he found out?
