Chapter 28

As Eve and Roarke arrived at Central, reporters were already waiting there like hounds. Roarke was trying to shield her but it seems like she managed to pass them all by herself.

"Princess Sora was booked at room A.", Peabody said as she met them at the glide. "Levinski was at B, currently grilled by Baxter and Trueheart. They just started him five minutes ago."

"Hmm. I'll wager ours will spill everything first before they can get theirs."

"You think that midget will play catch-ball after he humiliate himself in front of live TV?"

Eve snickered, "His brain might be as small as a flea, but his numb skull is thicker than a brick. He plays politics. He'll lawyer first, and if Baxter will let him play his tune, he'll just end up tripping himself. He tends to blabber too much, especially if his pride was highlighted. That way we can book him Accessory to Murder mixed with plunder and drug-trafficking."

"Without using Nadine's recordings?"

"Without using Nadine's recordings.", she affirmed, trying not to twitch. "If things won't work according to our plan, that is."

Peabody was about to say something, but the commotion in the bullpen caught their attention.

"This is a conspiracy against the monarchy of Harmin!", Prince Lamook announced as he walked towards them. "I need a valid explanation about this, Lieutenant. You must release my wife or else I will file a complaint against you! And I'm also directing to you, Roarke. You made a worst decision for marrying a ludicrous and unsuitable woman!"

"I'll consider that you're still perturbed with the turn of events, Lamook.", Roarke said coolly, "But I will not tolerate any insults towards my wife. Another word against the Lieutenant, I'll expunge you."

"Easy there, pal.". Eve said when she sensed danger. "Prince Lamook may stay in the Observation while I ask his wife some questions about what happened a while ago. I believe he was also one of many who witnessed how his wife attempted to kill his sister."

"That was an entrapment! A bait you laid against Sora!"

"And you're aware about it.", she reasoned. "Have you ever thought of giving her an itsy-bitsy hint about me as Princess Petun's decoy? Or if you did, have you ever imagined what she'll do afterwards?"

He was about to reply but Eve cut him, "How well do you know all of your wives, Prince Lamook? Princess Sora was just one of your many, if we include your concubines as well, and yet you're doing an effort to save her. Is it because of the scandal? Or because of something else?"

"Wha-what to you mean?"

"I will ask you again - how well do you know all of your wives? Out of them, who do you favoured most?"

"I treat them fairly well."

"That didn't answer my question, your Highness.", she scoffed. "If my husband would tell me the same thing he used to tell with his bimbos, I'll castrate him using a blunt scissor, and then throw his dick as a food for dogs."

"Darling, no wonder I adore you.", Roarke said.

She noticed Whitney was walking towards them, with Afef and two of Petun's royal guards following behind.

"Commander."

"Lieutenant.", Whitney acknowledged, and then looked at Lamook. "I know that the turn of events was quite aggravating, but as Lieutenant's direct superior, I will take full responsibility if the whole NYPSD and my department failed to fix this case."

"Let the police serve their justice in this matter, your Highness.", Afef said as he tugged his arm calmly.

Lamook balled his fists and marched towards the Observation area where Sora was temporarily detained. Afef slightly bowed, and left.

"I want you to wrap this things up, clean and fast, Lieutenant.", Whitney said.

"It won't be long, Commander."

"I never questioned your integrity, Dallas. Same goes to you, Roarke. The whole NYPSD is thankful for your assistance.", he added. "And in case I forgot to offer my congratulations, then I would like to give it now."

"Thanks." It was a rare sight for Eve to see Roarke flustered in front of her commander.

As Whitney went towards the Observation room, Roarke said, "As much as I would like to see you bullying a royalty, I have to watch how your other team grilled my favorite rival."

"What's with you men enjoyed seeing your counterpart's suffer?", Eve commented as she rolled her eyes. "Just don't bring some popcorns and pizza inside the Observation."

"Hmm, I don't think that's possible now Lieutenant, as I already ordered butter-coated popcorns and pepperoni pizza.", he grinned when she scowled. "Don't push yourself too much, Darling."

"Huh. Right. Let's go, Peabody."

"So that was not a drama then.....right?", Peabody whispered as they walked towards the Interrogation. "Roarke looked sappy back there."

"Roarke is always sappy. He's doing it to undermine my authority.", she replied, but when she saw her partner's puppy-eyed stares, she sighed. "Yeah, I'm knocked-up and-"

"Oh my God, Oh my God! That's so mag!", Peabody squealed, hugged Eve while jumping. "What's the feeling? Are you feeling unwell or dizzy? Oh yeah, you bolted a lot in the bathroom these past few days! When did you learn about it? How many weeks are you now?"

"You know what Detective, you're just giving me all the reason to use my boots and butcher your ass right now. Quit it out!"

"Oh gosh, sorry Dallas. You know, I got carried away and all that -"

"You got carried away too much."

Peabody stepped back and wiped the tears on her eyes. "I sometimes imagined how you and Roarke would handle a baby someday, and I'm so happy to know that both of you finally decided to have one."

"We've talked about this for quite some time. Rare occasions.", Eve explained. "It was supposed to be a surprise gift for him, and then we'll keep it in private, but this untimely case ruined it all. I even learned all of it during the middle of investigation."

"The media believed that it was Princess Petun and not you who announced it, so basically nobody knows. Besides, the broadcast was immediately interrupted by EDD when you slapped Levinski."

"As my partner, I guess you deserved to know everything. And no more hugs! I'm quite dizzy and bitchy to punch you now."

Peabody only nodded as she controlled her urge to hug Eve again.

"Dallas, Lieutenant Eve and Peabody, Detective Delia interviewing Princess Consort Sora of Harmin.", Eve said as they entered the interrogation room. "I believe somebody already informed you about your rights."

"I have nothing to explain.", Princess Sora said with a slight hint of oriental accent.

One word that best describe her was 'alluring'. When Eve first saw her ID, she knew that the Princess was very particular about her wits and charms. Her husband Prince Lamook was aware of it, and used it as an advantage in luring possible investors. By that, she earned a public title 'most favored wife'.

Eve might have met her in person during the Offertory while in disguise, but that was not enough to confirm her theories.

"You were reluctant when we dragged you here in Central, but you didn't call a lawyer afterwards. We could send you an interpreter or do an auto-translate in case you'll have some difficulty in explaining yourself, but you brushed off that offer. You sat here inside this small room with a cheap tea as a refreshment for almost an hour, but you didn't complain. Elite people, even politicians or celebrity alike, will never be as calm and reserved as you are right now.", Eve said, and then bent down to see the clarity on her opal-like eyes. "You know what I called it? Gutsy."

"You looked like Petun."

"And yet you failed to identify which of us is real."

"You don't have the right to accuse me of something I never did."

"Hear that, Peabody? She's claiming innocence now.", she snickered. "Then who aimed a sharp sword when the Princess bride attempted to run away? Who ransacked the hotel's conference that eventually killed an expectant father and a widowed mother? And who gave a hint to a half-blooded servant and manipulate him to do some kidnapping?"

"You don't have a proof that I'm guilty."

Peabody handed Eve a binder, then laid it on top of the table. And while she organized all the pictures according to the order of events, she noticed Sora's appalled face.

Eve gave the Princess a minute to compose her thoughts while she made some strategies to lessen the blow. She handled a lot of cold-blooded murders, but it was unlikely for her to empathize the suspect.

"Have you heard about a crime of passion due to incestuous jealousy, your Highness?"
