Chapter 27-Help Offered
-Josie-
Vivienne leads the way to a different building that I haven't been to before and I realize that she has her room here because of how lavishly decorated it is. She shuts the door after me.
"Viv..." I start to speak but she cuts in, "I'm not turning you in."
I'm so surprised that I blurt out, "Why?"
"I'm curious to know why you have returned to France under false name when you could have comfortably stayed in your own country, out of harm's reach."
I cross my arms, "Why should I answer this?"
Vivienne sighs as she sits down in one of the armchairs and a few tears stream down her cheeks.
"Vivienne?" I gasp.
"I'll explain myself first. Hopefully, that will convince you to trust me." Vivienne sighs as she looks at me, "Please sit down, I won't bite."
I think it over for a second before I sit down in an armchair across from hers.
Vivienne takes a deep breath before she starts talking.
"I'm only here because of David." She starts but I cut in, "David?"
"That's my husband's first name, David Clement. I think you met him a few times." She says and I nod as I understand.
"David was one of Queen Camille's advisors and ever since the attacks started, he has been a prime target, regardless of the fact that he's my husband. I didn't come from a prominent family. My parents were upper working class. My father was killed in the war against New Asia and my mother killed herself a couple of months after. Luca, my brother and I were raised by my paternal grandparents who were one of the founding people of the insurgent group after my father died."
She pauses for a second before continuing, a small smile on her face.
"David's father was Lady Daphne's advisor and he loved keeping up with the latest fashion trends. My grandfather was one of the best men's tailor in France. David came with his father to the shop once and that's when we saw each for the first time. Ever since he owned my heart completely and soon I found out that he returned those feelings. I think you can fill in the rest of the story."
I nod, lost in her words.
"When the attacks started and David became a target, I couldn't just sit back and watch the man I love get hurt. So, I left one night, without telling him anything and rejoined the insurgents. He may think of me as an enemy now but at least I get to keep an eye on him and make sure that he stays safe."
The words make my heart ache and I realize that it's because I know that I would do anything to keep Kaden safe too.
"Why are you telling me all this?" I finally ask.
"You don't have to tell me anything, but I know that you must have a reason to risk your life and the life of the man you love. And that has something to do with the insurgents because you're right in the heart of their activity hub."
She pauses and I know that I owe her a reply so I nod in confirmation, making her sigh in relief at being correct as she leans back in her chair.
"Josephine, I know that I wasn't kind to you and you made it clear that you don't want to be my friend. So, I'm here as an accomplice, offering to help in any way possible if it means saving David's life." She whispers.
"What did she want?" Kaden asks when I sit down at the cafeteria table.
"I think I have a way to get the leaders alone on the night of the party." I whisper and watch Kaden's eyes widen in realization as I nod, "She offered me help."
