Chapter 14-Next Morning

-Josie-

The next morning Kaden and I are awake and dressed early in the morning since neither of us slept much anyways. The news is reporting the attack on the palace and there are reports of attacks on houses of some close relatives of the royal family too. While there were no casualties there, there are plenty from both guards and the sympathizers of the insurgent group.

Ahren arrives for breakfast before Camille but she joins us soon after and she looks in terrible shape from the events of last night. She's wearing one of my dresses as I instructed Amarna to offer her.

"Are there any more news from within the palace? From mother?" Camille asks, clutching Ahren's arm.

"Is your mother staying with family?" I ask her.

Camille shakes her head, tears streaming out as she chokes, "She stayed back despite my instance to come with us."

We're all silent as she breaks into tears. Ahren tries to soothe her but she won't stop crying and I feel sorry for Camille. Sweet Camille doesn't deserve such harsh treatment for nothing.

"Camille, please, you're hurting yourself." Ahren says, kissing her head.

"I don't care!" She cries out, gasping against the tears.

"Camille please stop crying and think of what you're saying." Ahren insists and I can see his heart breaking at the sight of his wife crying.

"Who even cares about the baby if there won't be a home for it?" Camille cries.

"Baby?" I ask, confused.

Ahren looks up in shock as if he forgot that Kaden and I were in the room and Camille has stopped crying too.

"Oh no." She groans, rubbing her eyes.

"What's going on?" Kaden ventures.

Ahren looks at Camille for a second who nods, "They should know."

Ahren sighs and turns back to us, "Camille is pregnant."

"What?!" I cry out, nearly knocking my plate off the table.

Camille nods, "We've known for a few weeks now. Around the same time that we started hearing about the insurgency and we didn't want any more liabilities than we already had so we didn't tell anyone."

"No one knows?" I whisper.

Camille shakes her head, "Not even my mom."

"Oh Camille. You shouldn't be worrying yourself with politics then. Please leave that to Ahren and Kaden." I plead with her.

Camille sighs looking down at her belly, "I can't. I'm a queen before anything else."

"Camille it's your child." I sigh.

"Not important compared to the scores of people who will suffer at the hands of these rebels. They need to be dealt with." Camille has somehow regained her regal composure and is sitting taller in her chair.

I know in my heart that no amount of persuasion will budge Camille. I did grow up with a determined queen, Eadlyn, after all.

"Sir?" John appears in the dining room's doorway.

"Yes?" Kaden asks.

"A Renee is here to see Her Majesty." John announces.

"Renee is here!" Camille perks up at the name, her eyes wide.

"Is she safe to let in?" Kaden asks.

"She's my lady in waiting." Camille nods.

"Send her in." Kaden says to John who heads off to fetch Renee.

"Camille!" The raven hair girl I've seen with Camille at various events rushes into the dining room, "You're okay!"

"I am." Camille nods, looking sad again. "Do you have news of mom?"

Renee nods, "Yes, in fact. She sent you this."

She holds out a sealed envelope to Camille.

Camille is pregnant!
