Chapter 16: A Terrible Deal
Talia's Pov
My mother is dead. My father turns out to be The Darkness. I have the worst family in the history of ever.
I close my eyes, trying to keep tears from cascading down my cheeks. Even though it's been a week since the death of my mother, I refuse to talk about what she had said. My mother was the Queen of our world and has a husband who is probably wondering where she went. Did she cheat on her King to become more powerful? How did The Darkness even meet my mother?
I lay there on the bed in my and Jason's bedroom, Jason's in the shower in the bathroom connected to our bedroom. I can hear the water running behind the door, and I just stare up at the ceiling before me, thinking about how everything could have gone wrong in my life.
I met Jason, who was first an assassin that was hired to escort me to the castle. On the way, I fell for him and I had first encountered The Darkness in the forest where we kissed, which I believe was our first one. Now, he and I are the Alphas of a pack and we're both being hunted by The Darkness, who may be my father. I don't quite understand everything that has been happening. Why did a group of people come here? Why do some of the people in that group look like me, my mate, and a couple of my friends?
"Hey, are you still trying to figure out what's gone wrong in our lives?" Jason asks me, drawing me out of my thoughts. I told everyone that I know something had gone wrong and that I need time to figure out what it is, but that was just an excuse to be alone. Or as alone as I can be with my mate always checking to see if I'm okay.
"I don't know. I mean, we were like average people until my mother had sent you to 'escort' me to her castle when she could've just had a bunch of guards drag me away or just take me with her when I had met her when I was little. When I saw her when I was little, she gifted me a small white wolf pup that my other parents threw out." I tell him, my left arm draped over my eyes.
He sits down and removes my arm from over my face, I look up to him and see that he's worried. I've been keeping it in this whole time, and I don't want to worry anyone so I do my best not to break down.
"She gave you a white wolf pup when you were little?" He questions, I nod in agreement, and he continues, "Isn't that a bit weird? She gave you a wolf and then you become a wolf years later?"
"Now that I think about it, yeah, it is a bit weird. It has to be a coincidence though. I mean, how would she be able to know that? Unless there was some creepy lady lurking in the darkness telling her how my life will turn out, which is way too weird for these worlds."
Out of the corner of my eye, I see a hunched over figure in the shadows and it comes a bit closer. "On the contrary, Wolf Queen Talia, it is possible," it says, the voice is one you'd hear a wicked old witch having when it's ready to cook you in the oven and eat you. "I've been watching you since you were born, and the death of the Magic Queen released me from the prison she had me placed when you were a mere child."
"Who the fuck are you?!" I ask, my voice a bit too high to sound mature. I sound more panicky than I do calm.
The figure comes out of the shadows and it's then that I see the face of the girl from the castle. The same girl that was a guard and had asked Jason if I was one of his conquests. What was her name?
"My name is Evana, and I'm the Keeper of The Prophecies." She says, bowing before me and Jason as if we were both royalty. "I am hoping you remember me from when I was the 'guarding' the Magic Queen's castle? I thought so."
I look at her as if I've seen her more than just today and when I arrived at that castle. Have I seen her more than twice now? It isn't possible since I don't remember anything from when I was really small. Evana being the Keeper of Prophecies also seems a bit sketchy, to be honest, since she somehow got into our room when the windows and door are locked.
"Well, if you don't mind, please leave this room before you get hurt," Jason tells Evana as if he's known this would happen.
Evana ignores and looks to me. "You're going to have to make a hard choice, Talia, and you better agree with it or you won't have that happy family you've always wanted." With that, she faded back into the shadows.
There's a knock on the door and Jason opens it, a guard stands outside with blood all over his clothes. He tells Jason something quietly and they run out, I get and follow. The smell of blood becoming stronger the closer we get to the front door.
We reach outside and there's blood everywhere. The corpses of humans scatter the grass around the house, the smell of blood and death making me feel sick. I hear screams and yells, chants and roars, screeches and howls. It was another murder scene, like with my mother.
I grab 2 short swords from a couple of the many fallen warriors and flick them both in the air to remove some of the blood. Some strange markings form on the twin blades, and the left one glows icy blue while the right one glows a fiery red. I hear someone calling for help and notice that my mate is nowhere to be seen, so I run to where I heard the call for help. Once there, I see something that stops me in my tracks.
My mate is there, unconscious on the ground with a wound in his side, and he's in his wolf form. I stare at the scene and the man before him, one with blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes with black-rimmed glasses, holds a pistol in his hand. I growl, a deep sound from my chest, and his attention shifts to me.
"Ah, the Alpha Female has made an appearance. My name is Keon, Ms. Talia." The man says, placing the pistol to Jason's skull.
"What are you doing here?!" I ask, glaring at him. "Leave us all alone, hunter!"
"I will leave your mate and pack alone, on one condition," The man with blonde hair and black-rimmed glasses tells me, all the while holding a pistol to the head of a black wolf with hazel eyes. I hesitate, looking between the wolf and the man.
"What do I have to do, Keon?" She asks, standing up straighter than she was a moment ago. Pain flashes through her eyes, and the wolf yelps in pain as wolfsbane makes contact with his stomach.
"You must give me your firstborn child," Keon says, an evil grin spreads across his lips.
I look between the man and the wolf, then think for a moment.
"You can have my first born child, but I will not see you until I give birth and then I will never see you again afterward. Deal?"
The man puts his pistol into the holder that is connected to his belt and picks the wolf up by the scruff of its neck, and he tosses Jason to me. I go to my knees and hug my mate tightly, silent tears threaten to fall, and then I glance up at the man.
He says one word and leaves, one word that had sealed the fate of a young child who will never know their real mother and father.
"Deal."
