Roman stood tall, looking his parents in the eyes, refusing to back down and not tell them again. He refused to be a coward and let his fear win again. It wasn't going to happen. He would tell them, and he wouldn't let them threaten or belittle him.

"I'm trans," he finally spoke up. "I'm a boy, I always have been, and nothing you can say or do will change that. I am who I am, and if I am a boy, or if I like boys, then that's okay. I'm valid and I love who I am. Maybe the extra baggage of being born wrong sucks, but living every single day with you guys calling me the wrong name, or being gendered wrong hurts much more than any of that. I don't need you to accept me. I've already accepted myself and you can't push that away."

His parents stayed silent and he felt his confidence falter slightly. Sure, he didn't need their acceptance but having it would have been nice. Knowing his parents still loved him made it all the easier.

"Okay, I didn't expect you to... Be so open with us, especially right now with everything going on in school, but I am proud of you," his mother spoke up, smiling softly.

"Do you have a name you would prefer?" His mum watched him carefully.

"Oh..." Roman watched them, slightly taken aback by their reactions. "Roman... I'd prefer Roman."

"Well, Roman, I'm proud of you. I know coming out isn't easy, but I love you the same, you're our wonderful son, and nothing has changed," his mum smiled and pulled him in for a hug, reassuring him.

"So, if you don't mind my asking, Patton, the boy from school, is he your boyfriend?" His mother watched him fondly.

"Uh... Yeah, he is..."

"You should have him over," his mother grinned.

"Maybe," Roman smiled and went upstairs to his room, pulling out his phone and calling Patton.

"How'd it go?" Patton pushed as soon as he answered the phone.

"Oh," Roman feigned being upset. "Well, I guess it..."

"No, Ro, did they not accept you?" Patton's voice filled with worry and Roman felt guilty for misleading him.

"No, they didn't, not in the way I expected. They were so open about it and they couldn't be happier for me," Roman grinned.

"Roman! You can't do that to a guy!"

"I'm sorry, mi Amor," Roman laughed softly, knowing Patton could have punched him if he was there.

"It's okay, my prince, but don't do it again."

"I won't. They said you should come over for dinner sometime though, they want to officially meet you."

"I'll make sure to clear it with my parents, and I'll let you know tomorrow."

"Gotcha. Hey, Pat?"

"Yeah?"

"I love you."

"I love you too. Are you heading to bed?"

"Yeah, I'm tired and I have that huge test tomorrow."

"Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Well, one more thing."

"What is it?"

"You're valid, and I love you."

"You too, Pat. You too."

"Goodnight, Romeo."

"Goodnight, sunshine."

Roman hung up and smiled, getting himself ready for bed. At that moment, he couldn't be happier.
