[11] Beach Au

If Any part of this oneshot doesn't make sense, I blame it on the time of day and my headache.

When they first talked about it, going to the beach sounded like a great plan, they would be able to sunbathe, catch up, and get ice cream, not that the beach was an excuse for that. Ice cream was acceptable at all times. What they hadn't factored into their day was that the beach wasn't their own private area. There would be multiple other people there.

Patton had insisted that Virgil invited his boyfriend, Logan, but Virgil didn't want to leave Patton out, and it was their day out. They didn't get to spend much time together, with their other commitments, such as relationships, work, and school.

After a while of debating the topic, Patton finally let Virgil have his way, and it be the two of them, with a picnic, and a few other things to do.

The drive to the beach wasn't long, but when the Virgil was on the phone to Logan the entire time, Patton was rather bored. Of course, he was driving and had to pay attention to the road, but that didn't make it any less boring. He'd much rather be talking to Virgil. He realised that it would have been much more enjoyable had Logan been in the car, since they would've all been able to talk.

"Virgil, can you please put your phone down? You said no to Logan coming so we could spend time together, not so you could blow me off to text him." Patton sighed and pulled into a parking space, looking out at the sand and ocean.

It seemed like it would be quite a nice day, the sun was shining, the beach wasn't too busy, but it wasn't too quiet, which made it all the more fun.

He scanned the sands and noticed a group of people playing volleyball, and nearby was an open patch of sand, perfect for setting up their seating area in.

"Yeah, yeah, one sec." Virgil brushed the comment off, seemingly not caring about what Patton had to say, and he had to admit it hurt a bit.

"Virgil, I will take it from you, just to make sure you spend time with me." Patton turned the car off, and turned to face his friend. Sure, they'd been best friends for a long time, but Virgil sure knew how to push Patton's buttons, and since he'd started seeing Logan romantically, he'd somehow managed to do it more and more.

After a minute of silence, he reached over and plucked the phone from Virgil's fingers, causing him to turn to Patton, and begin to protest.

"No. I told you I would, and you ignored me. So, I'm keeping this." He typed a few words into the phone, letting Logan know Virgil would be unreachable all day, and for him not to worry.

"Pat, you're being a bit dramatic." Virgil undid his seatbelt, and reached for his phone, only for Patton to move it further away from him.

"Dramatic? You're the one who argued with me that having Logan come along would push me away, and make it less fun. You wanted it to be a day for the two of us, yet you're too busy tapping away on a screen, texting your boyfriend when he could have come with us, and you're making it less of an us day by being on your phone."

"Pat, come on, this is ridiculous." Virgil sighed, and ran a hand through his hair.

Patton noticed how much more he seemed to be feeling uncomfortable after being told the truth, even though he needed to hear it, and for a moment, Patton felt guilty.

"No, what's ridiculous is you can't go two minutes without texting Logan."

"Pat..."

"No. You and I are having a friends day, and you blew the chance to be around Logan too. So deal with it. I'm sorry, but it's for your own good." Patton climbed out of the drivers seat and went to get their things out of the trunk.

He felt bad telling Virgil those things, but he had to remind himself how much better the day would be when Virgil was focused on where they were, than where his boyfriend was.

"Pat, listen, I know I'm not the best friend at times, but don't you think you're being a bit... I don't know... Touchy?"

"Touchy? Why would you say that?" Patton looked at him as though he'd grown two heads, and was about to eat him.

"Well, you seem to be upset that I'm wanting to talk to Logan, even though I didn't want him to come..."

"You made a big song and dance about it being just us two and no Logan, and then you go and text him the entire way here!"

"If you must know, he had to call out of work today, because he was up sick in the night, so I'm sorry for trying to make sure he's okay."

Patton's eyes widened, he realised how he didn't try to listen to Virgil's side of the story, and he sighed.

"Virge... I'm sorry." He frowned as Virgil waved it off.

"Don't be. I get how things are, and I know you need company a lot more than you let anyone think."

"Yeah, well... Things are complicated."

"You don't have to explain yourself to me. Come on, there's a beach waiting for us, and we only have a few hours in the day to enjoy it."

Patton grinned and shut the trunk, before letting Virgil pull him to a nice spot in the middle of the beach.

They set up their parasol, laid down their towels, and put their bags to the side, where they were still reachable, but not in the way of them being able to be closer to one another.

"Pat?"

"Hm?"

"Isn't that Roman?" Virgil pointed to one of the people playing volleyball, and Patton realised that it was in fact his crush, Roman.

"Yeah, I guess it is, can we please put guy talk behind us for a while? I can't deal with that kind of stuff?" Patton pulled at the edges of the towel, avoiding looking back at roman.

"Yeah, sure. I guess."

Patton glanced to the ocean, and back to Virgil, before getting up and running off with one of their buckets.

Virgil rolled his eyes and lay back, his sunglasses sitting on his nose.

Patton giggled and came back with a bucket full of water.

"Hey, Virge?" Patton grinned and flicked some of the water at him, causing him to gasp from how cold it was, before he got up and was about to chase Patton.

As Patton turned to run away, he crashed into someone, who was running towards him. They landed on the sand with a thud and the bucket of water falling all over them.

Patton went to apologise, before he realised who he was stuck underneath. His face turned a bright shade of red, and he somehow managed to scurry out from beneath Roman.

"I'm sorry." He managed out, pulling his knees to his chest, not quite sure what else he could do or say to make the situation any better. "I'm sorry." He mumbled again, not wanting Roman to be mad at him.

"It's fine." Roman smiled at him, reaching out to help him up, not caring that they were both soaked and covered in sand. "Let me help you?"

Patton wasn't sure what he meant, but he let Roman help him up anyway.

As he was pulled up, he realised how close he and Roman were. Their chests were almost touching and he had to turn away to try and hide his red face.

"Are you okay?" Roman frowned, and Patton nodded, his words escaping him, the same way they always did whenever he was around Roman.

"Yeah. I'm fine." Patton took a step away from him, only to be stopped by the arms around his waist. His head snapped up, and he met Roman's gaze, he knew his face was a bright red, but he didn't care, he was close to Roman, and that was an accomplishment.

"Come with me?" Roman smiled, and took his hand, leading him to the ocean. "Trust me, this works, okay?"

Patton frowned. "You're not going to prank me, are you?" He tried to pull his hand away as they neared the ocean.

"No. I'm not. I promise." Roman turned back to face him with a smile that could rival the sun's brightness.

Patton stood towards the shore and watched as Roman walked a fair ways in.

"Come on, I need to show you a neat trick." Roman beckoned to him, and Patton caved. He carefully walked over to Roman, gasping as he lost his footing on the sand slightly.

He hadn't realised the arms that caught him before he hit the waves, and as he looked up, Roman's face was closer to his than when they were back up by the towels.

Patton's face was warm, and he knew it was a bright red, but as he scanned Roman's face, he realised how red he was too.

"Thanks. Again." Patton giggled softly, not wanting to ruin whatever was going on.

"It's fine. Um..." Things seemed to click in Roman's mind, and he helped stand Patton up, yet they still didn't seem to separate. "Patton, right?"

"Yeah!" Patton grinned, and Roman could have sworn his knees could have given out beneath him. How was it possible for someone to be that cute?

"Well, uh, anyway." Roman managed to find his words, "if you fall in the sand and are covered in water, just come into the ocean, preferably with someone, but alone is fine, and just kind of have a water fight or sit under the water for a while. It's rather fun. Just, be careful of waves if you do."

Patton, in all honesty, wasn't really listening, he was too busy admiring Roman, but he didn't think he'd ever admit it.

"Patton?"

"What?"

"Are you going to sit?"

He looked to Roman, who was sat with his shoulders beneath the water, eyes sparkling in the sun.

"Yeah. Sure." He smiled, and sat next to him, their shoulders touching, and for a while, they sat in silence, not having anything to talk about.

"How come we never talk? In school, I mean?" Roman finally broke the silence, and Patton noticed him looking at him.

"Because I didn't think you liked any of us, and I wasn't about to abandon my friends."

"What would you say, if I said, I like you? I like you a lot."

Patton smiled fondly, and looked back to the horizon, noticing another wave coming in.

"I'd say you'd have to prove it." His eyes sparkled with mischief, but he didn't think Roman cared.

"Then, can I kiss you?"

"If you can catch me!" Patton sunk under the water, and made it to the other side of the wave, giggling as Roman surfaced a few seconds later, drenched from the wave catching him off guard.

"You evil..." He got cut off by Patton splashing water at him, and giggling as he glared in response.

"That's it!" Roman lunged at him, and scooped him in his arms. "I caught you, and I could be nice, or I could be mean, but I like you too much so..." He leaned forward and connected their lips.

Patton's eyes widened as Roman's lips met his. He melted into it, and internally cringed as the taste of saltwater mixed into their kiss.

Roman broke the kiss, and before Patton could register what happened, he was beneath the water, having been dropped by Roman. He wasn't mad, he deserved it.

When he surfaced, he gasped as a pair of arms circled around his waist, and he felt a pair of lips he pressed to his temple.

"What would you say to a date and maybe being my boyfriend?" A soft voice spoke in his ear, and he turned to face Roman.

"I'd say, I'd like that very much, but I should get back to Virge..."

"Mind if I join?"

"Not at all." He smiled, and the two walked out of the water, back to where Virgil was sat.

Virgil looked to their linked hands, and sent a questioning glance to Patton, who brushed him off.

"Hey, if you're going to be talking to him, and probably making out with him, can I have my phone back to text Lo?" Virgil grinned as Patton and Roman's cheeks turned a bright red.

"Sure, but you bring this up again, and I'll see to it that Logan knows everything." Patton grinned.

"Like it's embarrassing for me!" Virgil countered, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, no, not about today, about that day he asked you out."

"Okay! No. We don't go there! You promised!"

Virgil reached into Patton's bag and took out his phone, sending Logan a text, rolling his eyes as Patton and Roman sat gazing into one another's eyes.

Patton smiled fondly and lightly grazed his fingers across Roman's cheek. He trailed his hand up to Romans' hair and tried to style it slightly, but failed due to it being so wet.

"You're cute." Roman mumbled, and reached to take Patton's hand, pressing a kiss to the back of it.

The action and the words made Patton blush a vibrant red and he ducked his head, trying to hide how much of an affect Roman had on him.

"Hey, don't hide."

Patton smiled, managing to glance up at Roman briefly, before looking back to their linked hands.

"Look at me." Roman murmured, tilting Patton's head up.

"Why?"

"One, you're cute, two, I can't kiss you if you're not looking at me."

Patton's eyes widened and he let Roman connect their lips once more.

Maybe the trip to the beach hadn't been what they'd expected, or planned, but it certainly turned out to be a wonderful day, nonetheless.
