Chapter 28
This is a big one. The wedding. We've been following along with this for many chapters now.
I'm so tempted to post everything cause chapter 33 is a good one but I must refrain.
...
Yixing's POV
...
I took a deep breath, looking at myself in the mirror. Today was the day. Several months in the making. Today, my fiance would become my wife. And I was equal parts excited beyond belief and scared out of my mind.
"You look good Xing," Tao said, sidling up behind me. He glanced out the window of my room, which had a good view of the driveway, and the car that would take us to the beach in a few minutes time. And the news van behind that, with a reporter already seeming to be speaking to a camera. "I thought they weren't supposed to start filming until the ceremony?" Tao asked me.
"That was their orders," I replied, closing my eyes briefly. "But they never listen. I'm kind of surprised it's only one news source here though." Even as I said that, another van came tearing down the driveway. "It's not like it really matters," I said. "Woo they get shots of the two of us leaving the palace."
"You could tell them off," Tao pointed out. "This is private property." It was tempting, let me tell you. But I knew better than that. This was huge. The only heir to the throne was taking a wife today. Only a stupid fool would miss out on this chance. The sad part to me would be watching my future children experience the exact same thing.
"Has anyone else arrived yet?" I asked instead. Tao had been in charge of making sure guests were taken care of in my place since I was busy getting ready here and mother and father were already at the beach making last minute adjustments.
"Ah, yes, about that..." he began, but a knock at my door stopped him. "I'll get it," he said. He broke away, and I turned back to my reflection. Could I really do this? I'd thought I was ready, but now that the day was here, I wasn't so sure.
"Ah Prince Yixing," a voice behind me said that had everything in me freezing for a brief time. I slowly turned, praying to the heavens I wasn't imagining things. Junmyeon smiled, but it was nothing more than a tick of his lips. And he looked absolutely stunning in his crisp charcoal grey suit. "I know I'll see you later, but I came to offer my congratulations a little early."
"Junnie," I breathed, damn near sprinting across my room. As I drew closer, that smile of his only grew bigger, and reaching higher. Much like the kid I never allowed myself to be, I plowed into his arms, feeling them wrap around me instantly. "Are you going to the ceremony?" I asked him. "You're one of the few people who got invited."
"Of course," he replied. Tao laughed delightedly in the background, but I tuned him out after that. I snaked my arms around Junmyeon as well, breathing in a scent that had provided me with comfort in the past, an intoxicating mixture of his cologne and shampoo (strange I know but I could live off of it). For a breath neither of us moved, just holding onto each other like we'd done so many times prior. "Well," he said at last, breaking our delicate silence and slipping out of my grasp. "I'd better get back to Hyeja and Baekhyun. I'm sure they're wondering where I went. It was good to see you Xing. We can talk more later, at the reception." And as quick as he'd come, he was gone again.
"That's what I was going to tell you," Tao broke in quietly. "That Junmyeon had arrived. But he made his presence known quite well on his own." I sighed, smoothing out the wrinkles in my suit and readjusting my bowtie. I'd allowed myself that pleasure for the day. Now it was time to actually be serious and composed. "You invited him to the ceremony?" Tao asked.
"Of course," I replied. "He's important to me, just like you are." After that he said nothing, so I figured I'd made my point. "Come on, we'd better get going," I said. "Don't wanna be late."
...
Man it was hot down here, surprisingly. I was standing under the archway at the end of the aisle, a simple wooden structure woven with red and pink roses. My gaze swept across the small expanse of seats, from my side of the family to hers. My friends and hers. My eyes lingered a moment on Junmyeon before sweeping around again.
"Nervous?" Tao asked quietly from beside me. I turned my attention to him, thankful for a distraction. Now every major news source in China was present, and a few sources from overseas, most notably from America and Korea. "I would be in your shoes."
"Of course I am," I answered, licking my dry lips and casting another look down the aisle. Junmyeon turned to his girlfriend, saying something that made her smile, and I felt my stomach heave. Now I finally understood how he felt when he saw Ying Yue and I together. It was torture. He was so close, and yet so far, far away. Baekhyun caught my eye and dipped his head, silently wishing me luck.
Just then the music changed from the lively beat we'd had playing off the small speakers behind me to a soft melody on the very real piano behind the small audience. All chatter died down instantly, and slowly everyone turned to look behind them. First came my parents, arm-in-arm and smiling softly. Then came Ying Yue's mother and grandmother, each looking stunning in their pale blue dresses.
My breath caught in my throat when Ying Yue stepped out from behind the little barrier they'd put up to hide her from my sight. She looked absolutely beautiful in a simple cream dress. My gaze met hers, and she smiled softly. I felt tears welling up, but rapidly blinked them away. She joined me under the arch a moment later. I marvelled at how breathtakingly beautiful she looked in the moment.
"Ladies and gentleman," the official began, capturing everyone's attention. "We are gathered here today to join two beautiful families. I believe the bride and groom have prepared vows for each other." Ying Yue and I turned to each other. I smiled softly at her bright and shiney eyes. So she was just as caught up in this as I was.
"Jiang Ying Yue." Her name seemed to echo across the space. "When I first met you, I wasn't sure what to think. But I found myself quickly smitten with you, and took the chance and asked you out on a proper date. Now, I can't imagine a future without you being a part of it. I promise to treat you well during our time together, and thank you. Not only am I the happiest guy, I'm also the luckiest."
"Prince Yixing..." She paused for a brief moment. "I'll admit, when we first met, you looked like a fool." I felt my face heat up, but she elicited some laughter from our audience. "I never imagined you'd get the confidence to string two words together to talk to me." She smiled her soft smile one of warmth and comfort. "But you proved yourself to be polite and sweet nonetheless. The last year and a half has been a crazy ride, and I can't wait to see where it takes us. I promise to spend the rest of our lives together making you as happy as I possibly can."
"Alright," the official said quietly, capturing our attention once again. "If anyone has any objections, speak now or forever hold your peace." No one spoke up. Not that I expected anyone to. "Do you, Yixing, take Ying Yue, to have and to hold, to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?"
"I do," I breathed, feeling a small tightening in my chest as the words fell from my lips.
"And do you, Ying Yue, take Yixing, to have and to hold, to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?"
"I do," she replied.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the official said proudly. "Everyone please welcome Prince Zhang Yixing and Princess Jiang Ying Yue." Light applause followed. "You may now kiss the bride." I leaned over and gently connected our lips. Small fireworks exploded inside of me as the world seemed to drop away. I took her hand in mine, leading her down the short aisle.
It didn't quite feel like home yet, but it was damn near close.
...
My head swam with the turnout for tonight. Heck they were still coming in waves. And this was why I didn't want absolutely everyone at the actual ceremony. It was a little overwhelming. I watched as the large space filled and the table of presents opposite us grew higher.
Right now, most of us were finishing dinner. And as people finished and moved off, staff would swoop in and begin cleaning up, making room for the dance floor. I held Ying Yue's hand under the table, watching everything through half-lidded eyes.
"Yixing." My gaze focused on a figure in front of the table. I inclined my head when I saw who it was.
"Yifan," I replied. "It's been awhile. You never visit anymore." Yifan snorted, and I once again wondered if he ever felt envious. Probably. What he never realized is I would kill to live like he did. "How are Aunt and Uncle?" I asked him.
"My parents? They're good," he replied. "Why did you never tell me about this lovely lady of yours. I only found out through the invite." Ah yes. Because he was my cousin, I supposed he felt like he needed to know everything. Except as we were growing up he was usually rough and demanding and I'd been a big pushover, and I neared my teens, I talked to him less and less. "I'm Yifan," he greeted. "Yixing's older cousin."
"Pleasure," my wife said politely, but I could tell she wasn't too pleased either. More than likely because I wasn't. I decided to sweep the space again, my gaze resting on a table near the back, where three distinct figures sat. I felt my lips twitch into a tiny smile at the sight of them. I kind of longed to talk to Junmyeon again. To catch up on our lives the last few months, since conversations between us had decreased a small bit.
"Yifan." I breathed a small sigh of relief when another voice cut into the conversation. One I was more than happy to hear. Luhan narrowed his eyes at my cousin. He didn't trust Yifan much either. After all, during childhood, he was often the one coming to collect me after Yifan had been too mean. "Are you harassing the happy couple?"
"Of course not," Yifan scoffed. "Just offering my congratulations. Can't I want to see my baby cousin?" But Luhan crossed his arms, seeming unconvinced. Yifan mumbled something and shuffled off.
"He's like half a head taller than you," Ying Yue piped up, and Luhan turned to her. "I'm surprised you could intimidate him like that."
"Oh trust me, it comes from years of practice," Luhan said, rolling his eyes. "That kid and I went toe-to-toe the second Yixing was born. It's not like he was really a bully, but he seemed to take great pleasure in knocking Yixing around, which you know, would upset any toddler. So yeah. Right from the get go I was protecting him." He turned a smile to me. "Not much changes, but you are more than capable of handling yourself these days."
"I think part of it is that he's jealous," I added. "My father was born first, so he got the throne. But Yifan was born first between the two of us. So by all accounts he should be sitting here. But nope. My father was king, and I would take the throne in his place some day."
"Ah," Ying Yue said. "That's really no life to live, is it?" I shook my head. I couldn't change how he thought. I'd just kind of learned to accept it as it was. There were always going to be people who envied the position I was in. "I'm glad you're not like that," she added. "You're far too sweet."
"Thank you?" She giggled, and really, that made the whole exchange worth it in my eyes. I loved seeing her so happy and carefree tonight. I turned to Luhan, who shot me a smile of his own and wandered off, leaving us alone once again.
"Are you ready?" Ying Yue asked. I started, blinking when I realized what was happening. The dance floor. They were finally making enough room for it. I rose, offering my hand to Ying Yue, who accepted it and followed behind me. I turned back to look at her, marvelling once again at the fact that this beautiful woman was now my wife.
As I held her and we twirled around, I could almost forget about all my worries.
Almost.
...
I just had to rewrite all of the last part but you know I honestly think it turned out better than the last time. Also I'm aware we didn't have Junmyeon's POV this chapter, but this seemed too important an event, and throwing his POV in would've just ruined the flow. But don't worry. We'll see him next chapter.
