Chapter One : Let Me Go
I don't wait around to be disappointed again.
So, excuse me if I don't fall for that or you ever again.
Year of 2018
Lucia
"She must produce an heir, Nicholas. Now I've kept your marriage a secret but you two have been married for nearly nine years and the people are starting to question you as the monarch of this country!" King Father, Marcus exclaimed.
I had just returned from my cousin's Eugenie's wedding when I stumbled upon the loud conversation that Nicholas was having with his father in his study.
I came closer to the door, listening.
"Father, we are in no rush for children. The public will understand and support their king." Nicholas said.
"Nicholas, at this point your popularity is decreasing. I suggest you either talk to Lucia about this or have an illegitimate child." Marcus said.
"Father!" Nicholas exclaimed.
"Nicholas, this dynasty will not be demolished because of you and her." Marcus said.
"Father, calm down. Do not disrespect me or my wife like that ever again. You may be my father but I will not tolerate disrespect from you." Nicholas said.
"Fine but just think about what I said. I'm sorry for putting you in this position but this is very important, Nicholas, our family reign could end because of this. The parliament is session and your cousin, Henrik is very eager to snatch the throne from you." Marcus said.
"That will never happen." Nicholas said.
"I'm just worried, son. I feel something terrible is coming." Marcus said.
I walked away from the door and went to our bedroom. I couldn't believe what I just heard. Would Nicholas really take a mistress to produce an heir? Why would his father really suggest something like that?
Why haven't we really had a child in nine years?
Nicholas
Nicholas excused himself and wandered through the halls of the palace for an hour or so trying to fully grasp what had just happened. What his father had said was true – speculation was running rampant about why the King had not produced an heir. That the king was incapable of doing so.
It had gone from the typical media joking and light harassment to a full blown concern among the people and Parliament in Mendorra that dreadfully they were seeing the last of the Jensen line.
Nicholas walked into the bedroom that he shared with Lucia. She was laying on the bed, watching television.
"You're back?" He asked.
"Yes, I am. Is everything okay? You like you have a lot on your mind." Lucia answered.
"Everything is fine, just stressed from royal duties." He said.
"Oh, okay." She said.
"How was the wedding?" He asked.
"It was beautiful. I'm sad you couldn't come with me." She answered.
"I know, I'm sorry." He said.
"So, I seen your father pass by. I hope everything is okay with him. He seemed in deep thought, he barely acknowledged me." She said.
"Everything is okay, Lucia." He said.
"You're lying, Nike." Lucia said.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"Nicholas, divorce me." Lucia replied.
"Why would I do that?" He asked.
"Do you have any idea what it's like hearing my dear father in law talk and say incredibly hurtful things, including my capabilities as a woman and you possibly taking a mistress to produce an heir?" Lucia replied.
"Lucia." He said.
"Then to hear my husband barely defend me. Oh, just a simple do not disrespect me and my wife. I will not tolerate disrespect. You don't even try to explain to your father, why we haven't had children. By the way, Nicholas, why haven't we had children?" Lucia asked.
"Lucia, please calm down. We both know that is not in our control and as for my father, he will not be a problem." He answered.
"And neither will I because I won't be here to see you crave into his demands and sleep with another woman." Lucia said.
"Lucia." He said.
"Let me go, Nicholas. Maybe, it's for the best." She said.
