The wedding of Princess Ariana and Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster was held on 19 June 2019, at Westminster Abbey in London, England.

Date
19 June 2019
Location
Westminster Abbey, London, England
Participants
Princess Ariana, 7th Duchess of Westminster
Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster

One month after announcing their engagement, Ariana and Hugh married on 19 June 2019, at Westminster Abbey in London. The Dean of Westminster, John Hall, presided at the service; the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, conducted the marriage; Richard Chartres, the Bishop of London, preached the sermon; and a reading was given by the bride's brother, the Duke of Sussex. Hugh's best man was the Duke of Cambridge , while the bride's cousin, Lady Kitty Spencer, was maid of honour. The ceremony was attended by the bride's and groom's families, as well as members of foreign royal dynasties, diplomats, and the couple's chosen personal guests. The wedding was not a full state occasion and many details were left to the couple to decide, such as much of the guest list of about 2,000. Ariana made her way with her father the Prince of Wales from Clarence House in the Glass Coach, arriving at the church at 1:00. The Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie conducted at the 50-minute wedding ceremony. Over 8,000 street parties were held throughout the United Kingdom, and one million people lined the route between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. The ceremony was viewed live by tens of millions more around the world, including 98 million live streams on YouTube. In the United Kingdom, television audiences peaked at 59 million viewers, with a total of 47 million watching part of the coverage.

The Duke and Duchess of Westminster left Westminster Abbey for Buckingham Palace in an open-top 1902 State Landau. Around 100,000 people gathered to witness the Ariana and Hugh's first kiss as man and wife on the balcony of the palace. After a traditional wedding breakfast for 400 guests at Buckingham Palace, the married couple and some 650 guests moved to a party at Claridge's hotel. The bride then changed into a light blue Ralph & Russo dress from the spring/autumn 2016 collection for the party.

Princess Ariana's Wedding Tiara Is the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara

Princess Ariana's royal wedding walk down the aisle wouldn't have been true royal wedding without plenty of dazzling gems on display, particularly in the form of a sparkling diamond tiara for the bride.

Upon her arrival at the abbey, eagle-eyed viewers and royal jewelry fans were quick to note that Ariana had chosen the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, on loan from Queen Elizabeth, for the memorable occasion. The Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, this tiara of 15 intertwined diamond circles strung together with a diamond ribbon on top and hung with articulating pendant pearls, made in the 1874 by Bolin, the Russian court jeweler. She hid this wonderful example of intricate Russian craftsmanship in the vault at Vladimir Palace in 1918 when she fled St. Petersburg in the wake of the revolution. It remained hidden away until a friend of the family who happened to be a member of the British Secret Intelligence Service smuggled the jewels out of Russia for the Grand Duchess, tucked away in a plain bag.

With her jewels finally returned to her, she split them up amongst her four children before passing away in Paris in 1920. This tiara went to her daughter, Princess Nicholas of Greece. Princess Nicholas sold her jewels to benefit both her family and Russian charities, and she sold this one in 1921 to Queen Mary. Mary subsequently had to have some repairs completed, as the journey hadn't been kind to the fine craftsmanship. It was inherited by Queen Elizabeth on Mary's death in 1953 along with the rest of her remaining jewel collection.

The Queen has worn this a few times in a third version, with no pendants at all. While I'm sure this is easier to wear (lighter, no stones swinging around as the emeralds or pearls would do), I'm afraid it looks like just what it is: a tiara with missing pieces.

Perhaps because of its versatility, it has become one of the Queen's favorite tiaras. She seems to prefer the pearl version - no doubt, she has plenty of pearl accessories to pair it with. In the 1980s, she had the deteriorating silver mount redone in sturdy yellow gold to hold up to her frequent usage.

Before finally debuting her ultimate wedding look, there was much speculation about which tiara she might select from the royal vault — or if she would design something entirely new. The tiara options most considered included the Spencer Tiara, the Strathmore Rose Tiara, the Cambridge Lover's Know Tiara, Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara, the Lotus Flower Tiara, the Queen Mother's Cartier Bandeau and a number of other more niche pieces, each rich in royal history.

Back in 2011, Kate Middleton opted for the Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara for her walk down the aisle to marry Prince William at Westminster Abbey. Back in 2018, Meghan Markle opted for the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau Tiara for her walk down the aisle to marry Prince Harry at St George's chapel while Princess Eugenie opted for the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, commonly referred to as the Boucheron Tiara, for her walk down the aisle to marry Jack Brooksbank.

Princess Ariana and Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster Have Official New Royal Titles From the Queen

After marrying Princess Ariana at Westminster Abbey, Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster became an official member of the royal family.

Kensington Palace tweeted Saturday morning that the Queen was "pleased to confer a Dukedom on Princess Ariana of Wales and Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster. This a third time a woman has been made a Duchess in her own right. Her titles will be Duchess of Avondale, Countess of Essex and Baroness Kilkeel."

Princess Ariana's new title is Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Westminster and Avondale, and after marriage, Hugh Grosvenor's title is His Grace The Duke of Westminster and Avondale.

She is the first woman to be known as the Duchess of Avondale. Hugh is the first Duke of Avondale.

But after the royal wedding, there are still other ways to refer to Princess Ariana.

Her Royal Highness, Princess Ariana, Mrs. Grosvenor

Her Royal Highness, Princess Ariana, Duchess of Westminster

Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Avondale

Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Westminster and Avondale

Her Royal Highness, Ariana, Duchess of Westminster and Avondale

However, if Ariana and Hugh have children, they will not be princes and princesses like William and Kate's children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Unless Queen Elizabeth issues a Letters Patent declaring otherwise, Ariana and Hugh's children will be lords and ladies until Prince Charles takes the throne then they will be princes and princesses.

This is due to a 1917 Letters Patent issued by King George V, that limited the titles of a sovereign's grandchildren. It read as follows: "...the grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms."

Basically, Prince William's oldest son, Prince George, was the only grandchild that was ever guaranteed the title of prince. However, when Kate was pregnant with Charlotte, the Queen issued a new Letters Patent stating that all of the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales would receive the title of prince or princess.

She could very well do the same for Hugh and Ariana's children.
