The Jeon's king was the first one to get up and retire from the meeting after he signed the pact, along with Jungkook and the commanders.
Leaving an angry Jackson and unbeknownst to them an additional pair of eyes that watched the whole thing amusedly behind those red curtains.
With hurried steps, he addressed the boys
"How was it?"
"It is bad, I mean they wanted to finish us in that room" Hoseok answered with a frown
The king widened his eyes along with Jungkook, and Namjoon confirmed his doubts
"You mean that the spear actually..?" The king hesitantly asked
"Yes, and better believe they were armed." Taehyung then hissed
"They thought we were stupid or something, since Hoseok killed him you're Highness are still alive" and he frowned as well
"Well, they can still send someone to do the job. We have to leave immediately" Yoongi stated as a matter of fact and they started jogging,
as they passed the threshold of the castle, as predicted arrows came flying as Namjoon and Yoongi successfully covered them blocking each arrow.
It was not easy though, since the shot arrows were not from simple archers but they were using crossbows; an early Chinese invention, which were faster and it became heavy by the time Jeonghan showed up with their horses since the cart would've drawn unwanted attention to him.
They proceeded mounting them but it was a difficult mission, they had to protect the king who started shouting at them to just go get on theirs as well.
Jungkook gritted his teeth, they were so close to the walls and it was still dangerous for them, he cursed under his breath finally going to his black horse.
They rided away successfully but soon a horse footing was heard behind them.
He turned his attention to the figure that he identified as Minghao, the bastard had already an arch and a drawn arrow fixed on a certain person, he looked horrified as it flew on the direction of the king.
"Father!"
And undeniably to not only him but to Namjoon and the others, it pierced through his back followed shortly by more shots all aiming at vital points.
And that's how the breathless king slid slowly from his horse, and his body rolled in the muddy land, staining his majestic red cloak, an amazing color that got drenched in another red, a darker and remorseful one.
They all stopped in their movement with equally terrified gazes.
Namjoon was the first to dismount his horse cursing loudly running to the rigid body, followed by the five others Jeonghan included.
Yoongi narrowed his eyes at the bloody arrows, and turned to Hoseok whose gaze was wild like fire as he watched Minghao turning the opposite way probably to report the well accomplished assassination,
unconsciously taking a few steps towards his horse but got stopped by a firm grip, so he turned to the hard eyes of his hyung, Yoongi with no words conveyed to him his thoughts and they both looked over how big of a mess their situation was...
Taehyung stood there along with the others, as they eyed in sheer disbelief their dead king, former king now who apparently died on the spot.
He wanted to scream and kill all those fuckers who messed with them, who got to kill him even in their presence. He was so frustrated and wanted to blame the other commanders for not listening to him, for ignoring his words.
The bastard never intended to keep the peace treaty going, he knew it, no they knew it. All those preparations and war gear...
He was mad at the situation, mad at them... and mad at him, he who suggested the idea in the first place.
He clenched his hands into fists, snapping his head to the raven head who was at his left, ready to beat him up for what he caused them.
But his heart almost stopped when he couldn't recognize the usually laid back male, it was like a completely different soul took over his body.
He was fisting his hair with one hand dangerously pulling on his black strands covering half of his face, his chest was heaving uncontrollably, eyes bloodshot and staggered breathing escaping his scowling mouth, a hideous glare towards his dead father's corpse, he looked so lost and crazy...he looked like a monster about to explode.
But the tears escaping those eyes uncontrollably said it all, behind that anger and crazed look hid an immense pain, he was hurting and most likely blaming himself for his father's death, being his own parent murderer.
Taehyung then felt a guilt pang in his chest, it downed on him like a thunder strike and all his anger faded into sadness and pity for Jungkook's loss even if he couldn't relate since his relationship with his own father was messed up and so he didn't shed a tear on his funeral, he still cried when his mother died.
So he could imagine how painful this was for the younger, not to forget that Jungkook now has to take all the heavy responsibilities of the kingdom on his shoulders at such a young age.
Namjoon who has been crouched the whole time finally decided to break the deadly silence
"The arrows were poisoned, no one would've survived the death even with only one shot."
He said remorsefully as he turned to Jungkook taken aback by his state but composed himself for the sake of the younger, he squeezed his shoulder muttering a "I'm sorry, we were useless.."
It was horrible how they wanted him dead to the extent of torturing the injured king even more by unnecessary shots. And everyone seemed to process the information fueling their hatred even more.
Jungkook shook his head furiously to dismiss those last words, and with a gruff but threatening voice he stated
"If they want a war, they'll get it. And I'll make sure to kill every last one of them by my own hands if necessary..."
and with that the trek back to their kingdom seemed much longer than when they came, as the news of the death spread in Mythland and anticipation took over its people on the deadly war that was soon about to break.
Minho and the whole kingdom received the five of them and their dead king with a great shock and horror when they learnt how they were tricked into a fake peace treaty to kill him, and some even felt pity for the prince who had to lead them through an inevitable war.
All of them were furious, and the soldiers were more than ready for it.
The next thing they knew, everyone was already on their tasks, preparations set as they officially declared war against the Chinese kingdom, the glorious would get the other under his control already obvious to the two and Jungkook was not that surprised when he saw that about five Korean kingdoms already chose the other side. Those Freaking snakes.
While as his father's good friends sent him their condolences and their wishes to help him in the said war.
In the Jeon's no need to a coronation ceremony, you automatically become the king if the former dies and have to give up your position if challenged and defeated,
Well Jungkook didn't want to hold anything like a celebration anyway especially after his father's death and the pain his mother was through. Despite his age, his father was supposed to have a longer reign period...which was cut short.
After his return, he didn't get to talk to many people. He was hurting and mourning his loss alone and in silence, he would rather get to work than drown in unnecessary depression, so he stopped being pathetic the moment he saw his mother break in front of him.
Even Jimin didn't get to see him that much once he requested him not to come daily.
He was sad to see his lover in that state, and his heart clenched in pain for him. He did love him after all, no matter what they spent more than two months together and talked a lot.
Jungkook was arrogant, cold hearted and all but he could love the people who were close to him and that included Jimin.
It's not like all they did was get into bed. They related emotionally and had their heartfelt talks where they opened up about their thoughts, whether they were satisfied after a heated session and even joke about it as both were kinky bastards in their own different ways. But it was Just like friends should be.
So not talking to him anymore made him feel so distant and out of reach.
And Jimin knew he shouldn't isolate himself like that drowning in work and negative thoughts about war.
Speaking of which, he himself had to get into medical practice for servants had to help with the injured of course.
So gulping the unease he had to the thought of him being there during those deadly fights, he shook his head with a cold feeling settling on his mind as he resumed walking to his destination.
A few days later, Jungkook had a report from Yoongi and Namjoon confirming the finalization of their war asset.
All that's left is the making of a huge quantity of the powder since it'll be wrapped in a cloth that part was not a problem, the kingdom was rich and they already had the material.
He nodded reading that, already going over the points that are left mentally.
Well , since he was the king then he was the one who makes decisions, therefore the meetings held by the commanders didn't include him anymore, instead he was only receiving the reports. In a way or another he felt excluded and left out and therefore asked to meet with them from now on.
He wanted to listen and ponder not read some suggestions written down for his sake.
And maybe, maybe he needed to see someone...
That's how the next morning he was in that oh so familiar room, five pairs of eyes fixed on his tired form. He was lacking on sleep since he would spend most of his days in either that damn throne handling the affairs with the help of the general to whom he was so thankful or his study room going through every document sent to him.
Taehyung was fixing him too, but kept on avoiding his eyes whenever the other looks up, he was still feeling awkward around him, well he was supposed to hate the male and despise him for stealing his boyfriend and being such a dick most of the time, heck he even injured Yeonjun was on purpose!
But no, he didn't feel any hatred or anger, nor any other negative feeling towards the younger, and that irritated him a lot.
The guy sure is going through a hard time with his father's death but it wouldn't be faire to just stop hating him because of that, or would it?
Now, all he sees in Jungkook is a void shell of a person, a person who was broken against their own will and who most likely blames themselves for their fate.
And so he settled his mind; he needed to talk some sense in his brain.
The meeting went on, unexpectedly boring as Yoongi proceeded giving them more information about how to use the powder he made and Namjoon presenting a draft of their formations, as usual archers shall be protected while they shoot their arrows while swordsmen cover them afterwards and they retreat eventually leaving Hoseok and Taehyung to lead the troops, as he himself would do the same if they face difficulties, always keeping a backup of soldiers not far behind the currently attacking wave.
It was a pretty solid way of doing things and they were pretty confident in their own soldiery force so Minho was already nodding at him approvingly, firm eyes holding his stare as he did so, which relieved Namjoon greatly.
Now for the most of it, Hoseok and Yoongi went away towards the fields, Namjoon to his study room to correct any mistakes and think about further ideas and Minho retreating to his chambers to finally take some rest,
which means that Jungkook and Taehyung were the only two who stayed back, none of them leaving for whatever reason, it's like they both knew that they had something to say to each other, which technically was true.
There was a huge silence before Taehyung finally looked up to see the raven head already staring at him, not with his usual cold and dark gaze but rather a distant look, almost apologetic as he wordlessly did eye him.
And he gulped at that, not wanting to deal with it despite a small voice in his head already confirming that it was inevitable as he felt sadness and pity inspecting the pale shade of the once healthy milky skin that makes his face so bright.
And as strange as it may sound, Jungkook unhooked his fingers and put down his arms that were formerly placed on the table in a serious posture, now completely transforming into a defeated one and Taehyung's eyes widened dramatically to the sudden switch.
And his shock skyrocketed when the younger murmured a
"I am sorry..."
.........................................................
So wow, I just wanted to use crossbows here and I was surprised to read on wiki that Greece and ancient China were the first inventors of it, since crossbows played a significant role historically in the warfare of Europe and East Asia. How convenient for me!
