Chapter Twenty Three
The train is packed full of people. Most seats have already been taken and the ones that are not have been filled by people's bags. A lot of people are choosing to stay standing rather than fight for a seat, and I cannot say that I blame them. The only problem for us is that we need to find a seat for Jasper to sit on because his leg is still too weak to stand for long periods of time.
Shuffling our way through the busy carriages, the three of us keep an eye out for an empty seat. I and Max do not mind standing, just as long as we can get Jasper to sit down somewhere. Unfortunately for us, it looks like no one is willing to move any of their own belongings to make room for anyone else.
"We're going to have to ask someone to move their things, aren't we?" Max asks and I nod my head at him.
"We really are... Excuse me Madam, would you mind moving your bag from that seat there? My friend here has recently had an operation on his leg and we have a very long journey a head of us. It really would be best if he could sit down." I ask an older woman, whose hair was turning white.
Unwillingly, the lady begins to move her bags and allows Jasper to sit next to her. I hear Jasper mutter a 'thank you' to her and that is the end of their conversation. Holding onto the railings above my head, I focus on the journey a head. The original plan was to go to the Eastern Zone once we arrived at The Cold Lands but I do not know how we are going to get there now. Between the three of us, we have no money and it is not like we can start asking for jobs. Maybe for the time being, we will have to stay where we are but even then we will not be able to afford a hotel room, not even for a night.
I begin biting my fingernails, a habit my mother used to always yell at me for. Ever since I turned twelve, I have been wearing false nails in order for me to fit the image of a princess, however, since starting this journey, they have all fallen off.
I feel a tap on my shoulder so I turn around to see Max staring at me. "Are you alright?" He asks, actually sounding concerned.
Shaking my head I tell him, "I'm not sure if we have made the right choice. How are we going to find anywhere to stay once we do reach the Cold Lands?" I ask in a hushed, worried tone.
Watching Max's eyes, I realise he had not thought about this either. I watch as they dart from side to side, thinking about the whole situation.
"So far we have slept in abandoned sewers and in the middle of fields. I think we should be fine." He tells me, his voice sounding shaky and not at all reassuring.
"If you say so..." is all I say back to him, not believing a word that he says.
As people board and exit the train, they always seem to try and hit us on the way out, as if it is their own personal challenge. It then comes as a relief to Max and I when we reach a stop and a lot of people decide to exit the train. We are then able to sit down near Jasper which is a lot comfier than standing up and holding onto a railing.
"How long until we reach the Cold Lands?" Jasper asks us once we have sat down.
"I do not know. Funnily enough Jasper, I am not the driver of the train so stop whining like a five year old." I snap back at him.
Straight a way I feel bad for talking to him like that, it must be hormones, I think to myself and then I realise that it will be that time of the month again soon. The more I sit back and think about it, the more I realise how unprepared I was to run away. I hardly doubt that too boys will be carrying around tampons or pads with them. Well there's not much I can do about that at the moment than hope it does not come, which is unlikely.
I'm sure there are women on this train who are carrying tampons with them, I'll just have to go around and ask, I think to myself.
"Max, can you pass me that bag? I have to go somewhere for a minute." I tell Max who passes me the bag with an unsure expression on his face.
"I'm worried. The last time you told someone you were going somewhere for a minute, you ended up running away." He says to me.
"That is very funny," I roll my eyes at him, "if you must know, I have women problems to attend to," And with that, I see the all the colour drain from his face. "Max, you didn't look this worried when Jasper got shot." I say before walking away, bag in hand.
There are plenty of women aboard the train; it's just trying to find the ones that look friendly. Sat further down the carriage is an older woman, though she wouldn't need to carry around tampons so I walk straight past her. Eventually I choose to ask a woman who looks to be in her thirties and is sitting by herself near a window.
"Excuse me Miss, I was wondering if I could talk to you? You see, my parents moved to the Cold Lands a few months ago with a new job but I had to stay at home. I have been saving up all of my money so I would be able to buy a ticket to go and see them. The problem is, I used all of my money on that ticket and I realise now that I need to buy other things. Do you maybe have any sanitary towels or tampons on you?" I ask nervously, using the sickly sweet voice that I have used previously in the past.
I can see that the woman was not expecting me to ask that as her face is overcome with shock and suddenly she becomes all flustered. "I have a couple of tampons here but that is all... Errr here is some money for you to buy some more... more things... and maybe some food. I don't want you to go hungry." The woman says while handing me a handful of coins.
"Thank you so much. I know my parents will also be thankful." I squeal at her, then pull her into a hug.
Shoving the money and feminine products into the bag, I make my way back over to Max and Jasper. Max looks like he is finally recovering.
"Did... did you get what you needed?" Max stutters at me and I can't help but laugh. Apparently Jasper finds it hilarious as well as he joins in with the laughing.
"I did thank you. Do you want to see?" I mess with him, opening the bag as if I am going to show him what is inside.
"I'm starting to see why you prefer men over women Max. Who knew you were so delicate." Jasper jokes with him, causing Max's face to turn a deep shade of red.
"Shut up, the pair of you." Max says to us which only causes us to laugh even more.
After that, the rest of the journey happens without any incident. We did spot some guards patrolling the train but we kept our head down and stayed on. It's not like we had any other option anyway. I slept for a while and all I seemed to dream about was trains and awful hotel rooms. At least my subconscious isn't thinking about my mother killing everyone anymore. Although, you ask the rebels and that is exactly what she is doing.
When I wake up, it is then Jasper's turn to sleep. I decide to stand up and stretch my legs after being sat down for so long. I do not venture very far from where we are sat, just far enough so I am able to have a good walk.
"The next stop will be the Cold Lands, which happen to be the final stop for this train. We should be reaching our destination in around half an hour so please make sure you are ready to leave the train by then." I hear the train driver say over the speaker.
I wake Jasper and Max up and tell them that we will be arriving soon. Neither of them looks to please to be woken up but we need to be ready to leave as soon as possible, it is already bad enough that we've have had to stay on this train as long as we have. I begin making sure we have everything that we will need for the next part of our journey.
The train pulls into the station and everybody who was on the train fights through the crowds to get off. There is hardly any room to move and it doesn't get any easier when we finally reach the station. There are people in every direction that you look in, either making their way out of trains or trying to get on them.
In one corner of the station, a small fight breaks out and people are yelling at each other. I only turn my eyes away when I see guards running towards the fight to break it up. There's around half a dozen of them just in that one corner alone, guards are swarming around the whole station.
Everything seems to be going smoothly; the three of us walk towards the exit, keeping our heads down. That is until we reach t exit of the station. There are guards there checking people's ID's and not letting people past if they do not have theirs.
Pulling Jasper and Max to the side and out of the queue, I ask them "what are we going to do?"
"I don't know, you two don't have any ID on you and even if you did it would be useless... you'd be locked up straight away." Max says.
"And we will not be able to get any fake ID's, unless they make any in this toilet." I point out, feeling like we are trapped in this station.
"Maybe Max could distract some of the guards and we could sneak past them?" Jasper suggests.
Shaking my head at him, I ask "how would we even do that? There are too many of them and if Max does something to annoy the guards, well then they'll arrest him straight away."
"Well what else do you think we can do? We can't stay in this train station forever and we don't have any money to buy another ticket to get out of here." Jasper says.
"I'll do it. I have my actual ID on me and as far as we're aware, I'm not being hunted by the guards. You two will have to try and slip by them but I don't know how you will. I'll try and distract the guards the best that I can though."
"How are we going to do this then?" I ask.
The three of us sit down to plan our escape route out. Max is going to queue up and get his ID checked, then to try and distract the guards; he will ask them some basic questions about the Cold Lands. Jasper and I on the other hand are going to try and sneak out through a fire escape, preferably, one that is in a toilet.
"Shall we do this then?" I ask the two of them.
"Let's do this." Max replies.
We split up and go in two different directions, Jasper and I towards one of the bathrooms and Max towards the ID queue.
"We'll wait for each other outside, don't venture too far." Jasper tells me even though we have gone this plan what feels like a hundred times.
"I know. Then we just have to wait for Max." I reply back to him.
I venture into the girls bathroom, peeping my head around the door. Currently there are only two people in there, and one of them is about to leave. She dries her hands and walks pass me, giving me a smile as she does so. Walking in, I notice that the fire exit is at the other end of the bathroom and that's when I realise a much simpler plan would have been to just pull the alarm and the three of us could run out together.
"Damn it." I mutter to myself as I walk closer to the door.
"Are you alright dear?" I whip my head around to find an old woman watching me.
"Err... yes I am... thank you."
"Good good. Just be careful of that door. The alarm goes off if you open it."
"Thank you. I better go." I say pointing to the toilet cubicle. Locking the door behind me, I sit on the toilet and wait until I hear the woman leave.
Eventually I hear the door open so I unlock the cubicle and make way back out. As I open the fire exit door, a loud alarm sounds through the speakers and I dash out, running down the fire exit stairs and into the open. I run down to the next street when I soon met with Jasper.
"We need to keep going. I overheard someone say that everyone in the queue has to remain there until their ID has been checked. We can't wait around here otherwise we run the risk of being caught. Come one." Jasper says before running down a street.
I run behind with no idea where we are going, then again I guess he doesn't know where he is going either. We only stop when we have left the rows of houses behind and are faced with a field filled with tents. There are far too many to count.
"Where are we?" I ask Jasper.
"I think this is a rebel camp."
