Chapter Twenty Seven

The three of us wonder around aimlessly for a while, unsure of what we should actually do. What is the best way to help people? How are we going to help? Should we visit other cities in the zone and see if they need help or stay here and help these people? All these questions buzz around in my mind and no answers seem to jump out at me.

The sky is slowly growing darker as clouds cover up the sun. People on the street seem to be slinking lower into the sleeping bags they are in, if they are lucky to have one. It is not long before we realise that we might have to end up sharing the streets with these people. Sleeping in old, abandoned sewers was one thing but this another thing completely. Never in my life as a princess did I ever think that I would have to sleep on the streets. Strange how life changes.

People keep glaring at us as we walk by them, no matter how far into the city we go, the response is always the same. Everywhere in the city has been damaged by the attacks from the rebels so there is nowhere safe to stay. All businesses look to have been shut down as nothing is open although I do not know how you would open a shop in a building where the roof is missing. Just as I am thinking of this, Max wonders off into the rubble.

"Where are you going?" I shout after him the same time as Jasper does.

"I'm just having a look." He turns around and tells us.

Hesitantly I follow on behind him, unsure of how safe this building actually is. It does look more intact that most of the other building but half of the roof is missing, the front door has been blown off its hinges and the glass in the window has been smashed to pieces. At least most of the walls are still stood up.

I reach the room that Max is stood in which looks relatively put together still. There is a sofa against the backs wall which is covered in rubble and dust, shelves are still hanging on the wall though they are bare. The items on the shelves must have fallen off. Other than that there is not much else in the room.

"This looks perfect." Max mutters under his breath.

I look at Jasper who rolls his eyes at me, looking as clueless as what I am feeling.

"Max, what's perfect?" Jasper asks him.

"This place. We can hide out in here. I don't know about you but I didn't feel like sleeping on the streets." He explains to us looking rather proud of himself.

"I do not think it will be that safe and what do we do if it rains? Half of the roof is missing, we would get soaked..."

"- We would get even wetter if were sat out on the streets. At least here with have some cover." Max says before I have finished my sentence.

"Do you not think that those people who have to live on the streets would rather stay in a house somewhere? There must be a reason that they choose to live out there rather than in here. It must be more dangerous than it looks." I try to explain to him but he is not listening.

Before my eyes, Max is unpacking his backpack and laying his sleeping bag on the floor. Jasper follows his lead and by this point, I am too tired to argue anymore. I unpack my own sleeping bag and crawl into it. My eyes begin to feel heavy and before I know it, I am fast asleep.

I am only woken up in the morning by the sound of Jasper unzipping his sleeping bag at sunrise.

"Where are you going?" I ask him, not raising my voice louder than a whisper so I do not wake Max up.

"Looking for a toilet." Jasper whispers back and wonders around the house.

I try going back to sleep but the sun begins to creep through the hole in roof, making it almost impossible to go back to sleep. After a few minutes, Max begins to stir in his own sleeping bag and eventually wakes himself up.

"Morning," I greet him, still zipped up in my own bag.

"Morning, where's Jasper?" he asks through a yawn.

"Toilet... or somewhere like that." I tell him.

Through the hole in the roof, I can hear birds' tweeting as the day begins. Definitely will not be getting anymore sleep now. Crawling out of my bag, I grab some clean clothes and head into another room to get changed. By the time I have finished and back in the room, Max is changed and so is Jasper. Both of them look like they are ready to go.

"Where are we going?" I ask as we leave the house and enter the streets again.

"Not a clue if I am honest with you princess." Jasper replies back to me.

"Is it just me or are the streets here different to the ones in the other zones?" I ask, slowly realising something.

"I hate to break it to you princess, but all the streets have been different otherwise we would have been in the same place all this time." Max replies to me sarcastically.

"That is not what I meant, you idiot. There does not seem to be any guards around here. Also, have you thought about what happens when it turns curfew? All these people just stay where they are, they do not really have the option to go anywhere else." I say to the two of them.

Jasper and Max both begin to look around and realise that I am right. Although the streets are packed full of people, they are completely empty of guards which I am now used to seeing on everywhere.

Max leans closer to us, "What if they are in disguise?" he suggests, making sure that he is not overheard.

"I doubt that. I know my mother and I know that she does not like to trick people. She would rather scare them outright, with them knowing who is watching them. If there are no guards in sight, then there are no guards at all." I tell them out of experience.

"So you think there are no guards at all?" Jasper asks, looking slightly confused. I nod my head at him. "For once we are guard free. I think I could get use to that."

"Still not disease free though." I mutter under my breath.

"I wonder why there are no guards though." Max wonders out loud.

"My mother probably does not care as much. The zone is full of rebels; they rank lower than termites in her opinion. I do not think she even thinks of them as people." I explain to them. Why spend money on people she does not care about? That has always been her motto.

"No offence princess, but your mother has a really cold heart." Jasper tell me.

"I know." For many years, I have been on the receiving end of her cold, small heart. "Wait, what is happening over there?" I am suddenly distracted by a huge gathering of people who all seem to be discussing something.

Behind the large group, my eyes can just make out a field full of tents. It is a sight that looks very familiar to me already.

"Rebel camp?" Max asks and I nod at him. I think that he is right.

It all looks the same; a field full of tents, smoke filling the air, the gatherings of people. If I had not have been on that train myself, I might not have believed we had moved at all. It looks exactly the same as the previous camp.

This time we know exactly what we are walking into so instead of marching straight in there, we pull ourselves aside.

"What shall we do?" Jasper asks, looking at me and for the first time, I realise he does not view himself as a leader in this small group, at least not anymore.

"The rational part of my mind is saying that we probably should not go but then the part of my mind that snuck out of the palace and ran away is saying what's the worst that can happen?" I tell him, feeling rather conflicted myself.

"Will it be safe though?" Max asks.

"Probably not. It is a camp full of rebels who want to kill me if they get the chance. To me, that does not sound that safe." I say with a slight grin on my face.

Jasper smiles back at me,"getting the taste for danger, are you princess?"

"Apparently so." I wink at him. "Also, I came here to help people and I bet there will be people in there who need help." I explain, remembering why I actually came here.

"Are you sure?" Max checks. I nod at him but I can see that he is not convinced. "I guess it might be better than sleeping in a house that could collapse on us at any point... I wonder why all the homeless people don't choose to sign up." He mutters the last part mainly to himself but Jasper and I still hear him.

He has an interesting point there. There must be a reason as to why those people prefer to sleep and live on the street rather than a tent. It is enough to make me hesitate about going in. Not enough to stop me though.

Luckily, earlier in the day we had decided to take our bags with us rather than leaving them in the abandoned house. That means that now, we can walk straight into the camp with our few belongings. I straighten my wig on the top of my head, I've gone back to the original blonde one, and make sure it is secure before heading in.

Unlike in the other camp, there is no one here to greet us. There are people mulling about everywhere, talking to their friends and family but no one looks in our direction. In fact, people try to avoid looking at us. The whole atmosphere feels completely different from the other where people wanted to know us. Here, everyone wants to keep their distance.

"Should we walk around?" Jasper asks us after a few minutes where we have just stood around the entrance waiting for someone to notice us.

I shrug my shoulders at him, unsure of what we actually should do so I look over at Max whose brown eyes hold the same unsure expression.

"We might as well. Someone further in might be able to help us." I say.

Slowly, we make our way through the tents and the crowd but no one says anything still. Some people give us funny looks but they remain silent. After about an hour we finally reach a tent that looks empty.

"Should we?" Max asks, point his head towards the empty tent.

"Maybe we should ask someone if it is empty?" I ask him in return.

Max takes the lead with this and pops his head around the tent next the one we are looking at. An elderly couple come stumbling out with a scowl on both of their faces.

"What? We were sleeping in here!" The elderly woman says, shouting each word just about.

"Err... we just wanted to know if this tent was empty? We need somewhere to stay." Max stutters, looking intimated by the woman.

"Yes. Now leave us alone." She says before crawling back into the tent leaving the three of us standing by ourselves.

"Let's go in then." I say.

***
We get ourselves settled down in the tent. There is only just enough for the three of us but it will do. It is slightly better than sleeping on the streets.

I decide to go out and explore the camp before nightfall. I vaguely make a note of where my tent is (between a blue tent and a red one) and make my way towards a small crowd of people.

The closer I get to the crowd, the louder the noise gets. People are screaming and crying at each other and some are even fighting each other.

"This is all your fault Charli. If you hadn't' had brought you diseased daughter here then no one would've died!" One man yells at another.

"Please, half of the camp was already ill before I cam along. My daughter needed a safe place to stay." The other man yells back in return.

I walk around the edge of the circle to hear snippets of what other people are saying.

"Poor girl, can't believe she died like that." A woman says.

"Yes well it looks like my son is next. He started coughing up blood thing morning and screaming of pain in his side. It all started because she came here."

"I can't believe that those two are fighting. It's as if enough people aren't already dying. One of them will definitely end up dead."

"Miss, what are you doing?" I'm suddenly pulled out of other people's conversation when a young girl pulls on the side of my top.

"Sorry, can I help you?" I ask, looking down at the girl who has big, blue eyes and dark hair. She reminds me of a younger version of Crystal but wither darker skin.

"My brother hurt himself. I need someone to help him." Before I have time to respond, the little girl is running off to where her brother is and I have no choice but to follow on behind.

The little girl runs at quite a speed so I have to run to keep up with her. While I am running, I notice there are wooden trap doors on the ground. I make a mental not to try and ask somebody about them later on.

Soon enough, the little girl reaches a boy who is crying on the floor. He cannot be any older than three years old himself and he is screaming in agony. On closer inspection I see that his leg is bent in an unusual shape, looking very much like that it is broken.

"Where are your parents?" I ask the girl as I bend down to look at the boys leg?

"Dead." The girl replies bluntly.

"Oh... well what about your grandparents or whoever it is that is looking after you?"

"That's me. I look after us both. Jillian has never got this hurt before." She cries out at me.

"Shh, shh, it will be alright." I say, trying to comfort both her and the boy.

Luckily I was allowed to take first aid classes during my time in the palace so I have a slight idea of what to do. Unfortunately for me, I do not have access to the medical equipment that I need I help him properly so I have to make it up as I go along.

"Do you have any bandages?" I look up at the girl who then runs back into the tent. She comes out again with a classic, green first aid box and pulls out some bandages and tape.

I know it will not do the job that it needs to but it is the best I can do right now.

"He needs to got to a hospital so we'll take him together?" I pick the boy up but as I do, he knocks my wig slightly so that I have to quickly put it back on one handed.

I am not quick enough though because the little girl sees and points at me.

"I know you!"

"No you do not." I argue back at her. Her eyes narrow at me but she does not say anything else until we reach the exit of the camp.

"Do you know where the hospital is?" I ask the girl once I realise I do not have a clue myself.

"This way." Again I end up just following the girl while carrying a heavy three year old in my arms.

We reach the entrance of a very old building, which I take to be the hospital. I walk over to the reception desk and explain the situation to the man who was stood there. He takes Jillian into a room and the girl follows behind.

"Hey, I never got your name." I call out to her.

"Macy! Thank you!" She beams at me before walking into the room.

I make my way back towards the camp and try to remember where it was I am staying. After a few attempts, I finally find Jasper and Max waiting for me.

"Where have you been?" Jasper asks before pulling me into a hug.

"It is a long story." I say before telling him and Max everything about the fight and then the little girl.

"Sounds like you have had fun." Max says back to me. "We have been really bored here. They don't even have jobs here." He tells me.

"How do we get food then?" I ask, feeling confused.

"Who knows. Let's eat what we have now and then go to bed." Jasper suggests and I agree with him. Today has really tired me out.

I fall asleep rather quickly once I crawl into my sleeping back but then in the middle of the night, I am woken up. At first I am confused until I realise it is a siren, followed by the sounds of screams.

"What's happened?" Jasper asks through a yawn.

"Dunno." Max replies.

We have a look outside to see people running in every direction and then someone else shouting "INCOMING ATTACK!" Followed by the sound of falling bombs.
