Chapter Twenty Four

"Do you honestly believe that this could be one of the camps?" I ask Jasper a few minutes later once we have backed out onto the street again and out of their view.

"It looks like one, or at least what I imagine one to look out. In fact, I bet this whole city is full of rebels. Didn't you say before that the A Group had been attacking the Cold Lands?" Jasper asks me.

Quietly I say to him, "that is what we were told by the mayor here. They were worried that the attacks would spread further. Looking back, they had every right to be worried."

I cannot get the image of the 'rebel camp' out of my mind. The field must have stretched out for miles and miles, further than what they eye can see or what the mind can imagine. Filling this field were tents, flimsy little tents that were all touching each other. Smoke was also rising in the air from where people must have been creating bonfires, or something of the sort. It did not look like a pleasant place to live and that is coming from a girl who has slept in old, abandoned sewers.

To change the subject I ask, "What are we going to do about Max. I mean, how is he going to find us?"

"We'll just have to wait for him and hope he finds us here." Jasper says to me.

The two of us sit down on the corner of a street which is facing away from the rebel camp. There is not much to look at, other than the houses that are facing us which seem to be deserted as it is. No one looks to live in them as the front windows have been smashed through and tiles are missing from the roof. I wouldn't want to live there either.

I sit and watch the house as there is nothing else to do. Nothing exciting happens other than the wind seems to be picking up. Night soon falls and suddenly it is really hard to see anything. Due to the fires at the camp, a thick fog has now set.

"Jasper, we are never going to see Max in this. Maybe we should walk back towards the train station? He could be waiting for us near there." I point out.

"We can't, it's too risky to walk back that way. How empty do you think that house is?" He says, changing the subject.

"I don't know but I'd guess quite empty. We have been sat out here for hours and nobody has entered it left the building... and it also doesn't look safe to live in." I tell him.

"Lets go in then." Jasper says and before I can reply he is already up and walking towards the house.

Pulling on his arm, I whisper "what are you doing?"

"Well we can't stay on the street all night. We will look for Max in the morning." Unsure of what I should do, I just follow him up the stairs at the front of the house and watch as he tries to pick the lock on the front of the door.

"Oi, what you doin' up there? That ain't your 'ouse." Someone yells at us through the darkness of the night.

"Sorry sir, we were lost you see so we were knocking on this door to see if anyone was in who could help us." I make up on the spot.

"Huh, unlikely story missus. I've seen folks like you two before. Come with me." The voice, which sounds like a mans, says to us.

Jasper and I walk down the steps to find a small but round man smirking at us.

"We get folks like you all the time at the moment, ever since Crow did that broadcast on the telly. You want to join us don't you? Sick of the queen I bet."

"You can say that again." I mutter under my breath.

Because we have no other choice, the two of us follow the man into the rebel camp which is lit up with fires but filled with smoke.

"Bill, I got another two 'ere. Where can they bunk?" The man asks someone, who I assume is Bill.

"Hmm row eighty four, tent X. There's room there after, well you know... shame about that, I liked those two." Bill says but I have no idea what he is talking about. I look over at Jasper who looks just as clueless.

"What's your names?" The small man asks.

"Errr... my name is... is Callie." I splutter out.

"I'm Chase." Jasper says, sounding a lot more convincing than me.

"Well I'm Dimitri." He grunts and we begin walking through the crowds of tents once again.

At the start of each row of tents, there is a number to help people find where they need to be. We're only at row four. After walking for about fifteen minutes, we reach row eighty four. I look beyond our row to see there are still hundreds of rows of tents.

"Right, 'ere you are. Yours should be towards the end, tent X. Tell them that Bill sent you." Dimitri tells us before walking off.

Without any hesitation, Jasper begins walking through the tents, looking for ours. I follow quickly behind him. There are people sitting around fires outside of their tents, grinning at us as well walk past. Most of their clothes look to be ripped in some way and everyone seems to have dirt all over their faces.

Eventually we reach our tent to see someone sitting outside it. A woman, with very light, blonde hair which is almost white.

"What do you want?" She asks us sharply.

"Is this tent X?" Jasper asks her in return. Roughly she nods her head. "We've been told that we are sharing this tent with you." He then tells her bluntly and she moves away from the entrance, letting us in.

"Why are we here?" I whisper to Jasper when the woman is out of sight.

"We needed somewhere to stay and now we have one. Tomorrow we will leave and look for Max."

Jasper's behaviour surprises me as I would have expected him to be sulking around without Max by his side. Not because he can't live without him, but just simply out of worry. Instead it is like someone completely new has taken over him. I leave him in the tent and I walk back over to the woman who is still sat outside.

"It has barely been two days and they have already found a replacement." She grumbles, not knowing that I can hear her.

Slowly I sit down next to her, weary of how she might act.

"Hi, I'm Callie." I slowly introduce myself to her. She doesn't respond straight away, instead she just looks me up and down and spits.

"Two days... no time to grieve... new people... how will Liliana cope?" She mutters to herself while staring intensely into the fire.

"Are you alright...err...?" I ask, leaving an opening for her to tell me her name.

"Of course I'm not you foolish little girl. Only two days ago my husband and brother were killed. I was told that the palace has killed them and now I have been dumped with you two. If you have any sense, you would leave now before one of you gets hurt." She says to me with silent ears rolling down her face.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't know." Well why would I? "Me and... and Chase do not mean to intrude  and we'll try and stay out of your way." I tell her.

All she does is look at me as if I am walking filth. I get up and return to the tent and tell Jasper about her dead husband and brother.

"At least we understand why she hates us." Is all that Jasper comments on the situation.

I crawl into the sleeping back which is provided and try to get some sleep but there always seems to be something happening. People are shouting all the way through the night and even when that stops, the woman comes into the tent making as much noise as possible.

Sunrise appears so I decide to get up then knowing that I will have no change of sleeping anymore. It already sounds like that plenty of people are up because I can hear lots of noise from outside the tent. Peering outside I see that the majority of people are women and children, the children who already seem eager to play.

I nudge Jasper awake, hoping that he will want to leave as soon as he wakes up.

"What do you want?" He grumbles as I push him to wake him up.

"Nice to see you to Jasp- Chase." I quickly change just in case that woman is listening. She looks to be fast asleep but who knows. "The sooner you get up, the sooner we can get out of here and look for Max." I tell him which slurs him to get up.

The two of us gather out belonging and crawl out of the tent.

"Where do you think you are going?" The woman say just as we had got out of the tent.

Jasper nudges my side as if to tell my that I should answer. I shoot him a look before saying "I told you last night that we didn't mean to intrude, you're obviously going through a touch time. Chase and I are going to leave. We were never going to stay that long anyway."

"You can't do that. This is not a hotel, you've not even done any work. Every camp mate has to contribute in some way and you two newcomers don't get out of that!" She yells angrily at us while spitting the world 'newcomers'.

Just as I was about to say sorry, a little girl comes running up to the woman.

"Momma, momma another little boy has died. I think it was Daniil, Anaya's baby. She said it was the disease!" Cry's the little girl to the woman, who is her mother apparently.

"Liliana, where have you been all night? I was worried sick." She says, embracing her daughter into a hug. It's sweet but all through the night she never mentioned that her daughter was missing.

"I was with the other girls momma, I told you yesterday. But he's dead, he really is. Anya won't stop crying and people are worried because it's the eleventh death this month from the disease. Momma I'm scared, will I die from the disease like the other children?" The child, Liliana asks her mother.

For the briefest moment, the mother looks up at us as if she is asking for help on what she should say. Then a split second later, she crouches back down to her daughter, who shares the same light blonde hair as her, and tells her that the disease won't get her.

The pair of them walk back into the tent, leaving Jasper and I outside.

"Do you think it's the same disease?" Jasper whispers to me.

"More than likely, too big of a coincidence otherwise. Shall we stay here for a while longer?" I ask.

"I think so but let's move to the front of the camp and look for Max first." I nod at him and tell him that I'll explain to the woman that we won't be leaving after all.

"Excuse me... I just wanted to tell you that we won't be leaving. We are going to the front of the camp to get jobs and wait for a friend who should be joining us. See you soon?" I ask at the end.

"Good... good. Be back before sundown." She says to me and I turn my back on her and walk back out of the tent. Just before I do, she says to me "I'm Katrina."

"Nice to meet you."

I meet Jasper again and the two of us make our way through the camp. I can certainly tell that we are further north compared to The Island. Even though it is summer, it is quite cold, the temperature only just over ten degrees celsius. The sky is a brilliant blue though with no clouds covering it at all. We reach the entrance of the camp and are greeted with Dimitri.

"Eyy its you two. Not leaving already are ya? Ya still need jobs assigning." He says sounding quite cheerful.

"No sir, we're staying right here. We are looking for a friend though, he should have joined us yesterday."

"What's he look like?"

"Dark hair, olive toned skin, black stubble. Slightly taller than what I am." Jasper tells him.

"I'll keep a look out for 'im. 'Ere are ya job assignments. Might as well start em tomorrow though." He tells us. I don't bother looking at mine, I just fold the paper up and place it in my pocket.

We can't leave the camp so the two of us stay by the entrance looking out for Max. An hour passes, and then another and no one walks down the street leading to the camp. The tent closes to us invite us to sit with them while we wait so we don't get cold.

Who knew the rebels could be so nice?

Another few hours pass and still nothing. That is until Dimitri taps us on the shoulder.

"This is him? Found 'im wondering the streets all by himself." And there in his grip is Max.

"Max!" Jasper says jumping up to go be him a hog before quickly pulling away, remembering where he is.

"Are you alright Jas-"

"- Chase" I quickly interrupt him. "Chase and I have been just fine." I say and Max nods at me so I know he understands.

"Yeah, Callie and I have been fine, just worried about you." Jasper tells him.

"For tonight you can bunk in the same tent as those two but tomorrow you two can get assigned a new one." Dimitri says, taking mainly to Max and Jasper. "Can't have you messing with the girls now, can we?" He winks at them and I have to bite my lip to stop myself from laughing.

We walk Max back to our tent and on the way there we fill him in about the deaths so far this month. He seems interested in what we have to say.

"So you want to stay here for a while?" He asks us and I nod at him.

"The longer we stay, the more money we can save up for the next part of our journey as well. We have the opportunity to have a paid job." I say to him.

"Let's do it then." Max agrees with us once we reach the tent.
