Chapter Twenty Five
We reach the tent to find Katrina and Liliana still sitting where they were this morning. I introduce the two of them to Max and explain that he will be staying here for the night but then he and Jasper will be assigned their own tent. The three of us also introduce ourselves to Liliana because I realise that we never had the chance to this morning.
Katrina puts me in charge of making dinner for the five of us while she had to go to her assigned job for a couple of hours. This also meant that we were babysitting her daughter. Luckily she is quite well behaved and all she does is stare at me while I attempt to cook some meat on the bonfire.
The other people in the campsite make cooking look easy as they all sit there, meat over the fire while chatting to each other. I thought I would be able to do this but I guess not as I burn the fourth piece of meat that I was given.
"You've never done this before, have you?" Jasper asks me. I shake my head at him, feeling clueless about how to cook.
"I've always had people to do it for me. Dinner has always been presented on a table." I tell him, keeping my voice law just in case Liliana is trying to listen.
"Let me do it, you look after the kid." He says.
I get up from where I am sat, a space which Max soon fills in, and walk towards the little girl. She looks up at me, her big, blue eyes staring up at me in wonder.
"My momma doesn't know why you are here. Why are you here?" she asks, putting emphasis on the 'you'.
I look at her, unsure of what I should say. I've heard that children ask more questions than adults and she certainly looks like a curious child.
"The simple story is that we were looking for a place to stay." I eventually say to her, which is not a lie, she just does not know the whole truth.
Liliana shrugs her tiny shoulders at me and then asks me if I want to play with her. She shows me some of her toys that she had brought here from her old home and we begin playing. Funnily enough, she ends up playing a runaway princess who somehow by the end of this game, ends up being eaten by a dragon. I really hope that is not my fate.
By the time the game has finished, Katrina has arrived back at the tent. Jasper plates up the food that he has cooked, resulting in Katrina raising her eyes at him. She apparently was not expecting that. No one talks during dinner, for us it is nice to eat some healthier food, rather than just what we have sneaked out of hotels. Once all the food has be eaten, we decide to settle down and go to bed as we all have to be up early in the morning. I will be starting my 'job' while Jasper and Max have to find out where their new tent is.
The next morning, I get up and get changed into some clean clothes that Katrina had laid out for me. I rumble around for the trousers that I wore yesterday and pull out the slip of paper which has my job assignment written on it. I groan when I read it, 'child minding' is what it says. Why, just why? It also tells me that I have to go to row one hundred and thirteen, which is where they apparently keep all the children. Well at least that is not too far.
"Callie, take Liliana with you... please." Katrina asks me just before I am about to leave to start.
"Sure," I say, taking the small girls hand. "Err... do you want to meet back here just before sundown?" I ask Jasper and Max who both agree.
Liliana and I make our way towards row one hundred and thirteen. By the time we get to where we should be, there are already about ten kids waiting. There are also a few other women loitering around the area, my guess is that they also work here. At least I will not have to struggle with a group of children all by myself.
"Can I go play?" Liliana asks me, pulling on my arm.
"Err... sure of course you can." The little girl runs off to join a group of her friends.
To start off with, I circle around the area where the children are playing, unsure of what I should actually be doing. The children do not look like they actually need watching as they are all behaving and just playing nicely. On a whim, I decide to go and sit with some of the other women who are watching over the children.
"Who are you?" one of the mothers asks me.
"Callie."
"Why are you here?"
"When did you get here?"
"What are your motives?"
"Why did you come here?" I'm asked by all these women.
I try and answer the questions, one by one. "Err... I'm here... well because... because of..." Why am I here? "My city was attacked and we had to all leave." I quickly make up on the spot. "I actually stumbled across this camp and it seemed like the perfect place to stay."
The other women seem to believe me and go back to talking about whatever it was they were talking about in the first place. '
The rest of the week passes in a similar fashion. I wake up, eat, watch children, and go back to the tent and so on. At the end of the week we are told to go back to the front of the camp in order to receive our money for the week. Jasper, Max and I decide to go together to collect what we have earned because we haven't seen each other much at all this week. The queue stretches on for rows and rows of tents as people wait to collect their money. At least it gives us the opportunity to talk for a while.
"So, what exactly is it that you two are doing?" I ask, moving a couple of steps forward in the queue.
Max rolls his eyes but it is Jasper that answers my question. "We have to fetch wood for all the fires. I didn't think it would be too bad at first considering we've always had to find our own wood but now I'm exhausted." He tells me.
I can see it in both of their faces that it is wearing them out. The pair of them both have bags under their eyes and their skin is definitely paler, which shows more on Max. Once they come back to the tent at night, the only things that either of them do are eat and then sleep. They don't have the time or the energy to do much else.
"Can't you ask for another job?" I wonder.
"No, this camp is mainly filled with women and children, with only a few exceptions. The more men they have who can collect wood, then the better it is for them. For everyone really." Max tells me. It makes me glad that I am not them because the thought of collection wood all day makes me want to cry.
For the next few minutes we talk about how we have been. I tell them about the children that I have to look after. Some of them are actually really nice and are so sweet. One girl always hands me over a present every time she sees me. Granted, it is normally just a pinecone but it is the thought that counts.
Slowly, we soon move further towards the front of the queue where I can see Dimitri handing out envelopes full of money.
"Look, my new favourite new people!" he exclaims, waving his arms in the air when he sees us. "Have you been liking the camp?" He asks while nodding his own head.
I cannot honestly say that I have but I would never say that to his face. "It has been great, thank you." I say, taking my envelope from his hand. I wait at the side for Jasper and Max who I turn take their payment.
"Where are they even getting the money from?" Jasper questions one we are far away from the queue. "Surely they can't be getting paid from the palace like all the other jobs, can they?" he asks looking at me.
It is not something I had ever thought about before but he has a very valid point. "I would know if my mother was funding these people. But then again, you would think I would know about the unspeakable disease so it just goes to show..." I mumble on.
I reach my tent that I am sharing with Katrina and her daughter first before Jasper and Max reach theirs. I hug them both goodbye and sit down to help cook dinner. At first, Katrina wanted the two of us to take it in turns to cook the meals but once she discovered that my cooking skills were non existing, she insisted that we do it together.
"Why can't you cook? Every young girl should know how to cook." She tells me firmly one day.
"My mother never taught." Well it is true but I doubt that she can cook much as well.
"Sit here and I'll show you." And for the last few nights I have learnt how to cook a few basic dishes over a bonfire. I have actually begun to enjoy it.
Tonight was no different as Katrina begins to show me how to cook sausages without burning them.
"Katrina, where are all the men? There are not many in this camp at all." I point out but then immediately regret, thinking about her husband and brother who died.
"They are in another camp, planning the attacks. Then they do them." She tells me bluntly.
"Oh, okay..." I do not really know what to say to her. "Do you know where the money comes from? The money they pay us with?"
Katrina stops cooking just to look at me. "The money is the worst part of it all. It is from the dead people's houses. After an attack, the men go rifling through the homes of the dead to see what valuable possessions they can find. They take them and trade them for cash unless they can find actual money instead. I hate it but I have to use it to feed my daughter at least. Now let me cook the dinner. No more questions." She tells me firmly.
The news of where the money comes from doesn't really shock me; in fact I expected it to come from somewhere like that. It makes me not want to use the money that I have sitting on my sleeping bag but just like Katrina has to use it for her daughter's survival, I have to use it for my own. It is as if taking the lives of the innocent is not enough but to go even further, they have to take everything that showed they had a life as well.
The next time I see Jasper and Max, I need to tell them about the money if they have not already found out by themselves. The sooner we can leave then the better. This place is even worse than what I thought and it is not even where the attacks are planned. It is just a holding cell for the women and children who are not needed to do the real work. Everything about this place disgusts me.
A/N: I hope you enjoyed this chapter though I am aware not much happened. Trust me, 'stuff' will be happening in upcoming chapters. You just have to be patient.
What do you think will happen next?
Will they stay at the camp for much longer if not?
How do you think the book will end?
Let me know all your thoughts, I'm interested in your theories.
Well that's it for this #RoyalWednesday and don't forget to vote and comment!
